Jesus.
In later news, NodeBB huh? It certainly feels much lighter weight, which from software meant to show text is a very good thing.

Why do they like to say that?
Why is fundamental capitalized?
Is banning also FUNdamental? The relevant part here is how they are using the word 'fundamental'. They mean it as the adjectival form of 'fundament', meaning 'buttocks'.
Obviously, Jeff thinks reading is Ass (note the capitalization! Maybe he should have used three exclamation points, too - for quality, as Maritza Campos would say) and so won't read things such as, say, bug reports.

There's no FTFY. NodeBB chose to implement Markdumb. They don't get to blame the plug-in when their forum's reputation takes a hit because of it.

Not really. We don't have an equivalent to the preposition "than" (that I can think of). The original preposition in Portuguese is actually much closer to "to".
But finding the right preposition to use in any particular case is something I too sometimes struggle amid.
-
@Zecc said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):

I think you use the case of the verbs more to indicate such things. English is preposition-heavy, even for a Germanic language.
-
@Yamikuronue said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
I may have been doing it wrong
-
Not really. The verb conjugation only1 depends on the subject2. It doesn't depend on the predicate.
Hmmm... A possible exception is when using the passive voice. But in that case the verb is acting more like an adjective, really.
1 Besides tense, that is.
2 To the point you can often completely omit the subject because you can tell by the verb's conjugation.
-
@Zecc said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
Besides tense, that is.
Which is a fair chunk of what I'm talking about.
-
Okay, what I've failed to communicate above is: although we've got a truckload of different verb conjugations, and these do transmit a lot of information on their own, this information only relates to subject (me/you/they/us/them) and tense (present, past, future, other tenses English is missing). They don't depend on the object of a clause.1
We've got our fair share of prepositions too, and like in English these can either add all sorts of extra information (below, throughout, after, against, off, about, among, ...) or in other cases simply be used "by default" eg. agree with, lie down. Like in English, prepositions can refer to one or more of {subject, verb, predicate} and to relations between them.
Look.... Bottom line is:"Inferior" is an adjective, in both English and Portuguese, so verbs aren't involved here at all.
It's simply the case that, unlike what happens to most other English prepositions, we don't have a direct equivalent to than and so we use "our to" instead. Hence @fbmac's mistake.
1 Sometimes we add a pronoun to a verb via an hyphen. That's not the same thing.
-
@Zecc said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
we don't have a direct equivalent to than
Some prepositions in English are effectively untranslatable, as their only real purpose is to stop the sentence from getting so dense that it implodes under its own weight. They don't help all that much either. ;) I used to do quite a bit of work taking documents written in sort-of-English by various project partners and recasting the result into actual English (following some truly scathing remarks by our reviewers) and I found I could always tell the nationality of the person who wrote a sentence by how they mangled the prepositions. It was largely a war between the Italians and the Poles for who would murder the language most…
-
@dkf said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):

Probably because prepositions are pretty weird and random in Italian as well. They almost never match the German or English preposition.
-
@izzion said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
¯_(ツ)_/¯ eh, sometimes you just hafta.
To be fair, I'm sure that's true for some updates for reasons other than "we don't clean up our temp stuff."
-
To be absolutely pendantic, than would have been a conjunction in the original post:
...translations are almost always worse than the original version (is).
