That's the setting to turn off the feature.

@djls45 You're tight. The value makes sense if you look at the registry key's name instead of only the table's heading.

We still haven't settled on which of
[section1] enabled = 1 [sectionb] disabled = 0
to standardise on.
I cover all bases in my programs by accepting either.
Having both, and having them conflict, results in my program making an appointment for you with Dr. Heisenberg.

an appointment for you with Dr. Heisenberg
You know exactly when you're meant to be there, but not where to go
-
@jbert said in In other news today...:
When I set the "force X off" policy to Disabled, why doesn’t it force X on?
Why would it? "Don't force X off" is totally different from "force X on".
-
@anotherusername
Certainly in GOP terms since Force On or Off means that the client/user where the terms are applied don't have any say in it while a non-forced option leaves the option of locally setting the option.

It's amazing how the neutral option (in this case "Don't force anything") is so often overlooked. In lots of things.

Reminds me, about two weeks ago colleague implemented a health check. The result is a command (the kind you run from a shell) that returns 0 if it is dead and 1 if it is alive. Which, you might remember, would make sense almost everywhere except shell. It turns out the framework it uses (JADE) will simply give up without running the checking agent if it can't contact the master thread or something, but return success and that is outside the check agent, so it can't be easily changed. So the result is backwards.

We had a $3000 scientific microwave in our lab in college. It ran Windows 95. Seriously.
-
@benjamin-hall Sure, but that's not what 7-Elevens have for nuking frozen burritos.
-
I think TRWTF is a $500 microwave in a 7-Eleven. They should be using a $60 microwave, because let's be honest, it's no surprise that a 7-Eleven microwave would get trashed by someone overheating their urine in it.
-
You have to read AND understand the documentation

True. I was just riffing off the "that's an expensive microwave" side point.

The occasional decay of neutrons into dark matter particles could solve a long-standing discrepancy in neutron decay experiments.
Interesting.
They didn’t find any signal, appearing to rule out this proposed decay channel
Ugh.
TL;DR: "There's this really cool new type of particle decay that could explain dark matter, even though our experiment to detect this type of decay completely failed!"

If "almost all major OS vendors" misunderstood what it said, that strongly suggests that it was written poorly.

That's not what it says. It says they have several ideas how the decay might look and the experiment ruled out just the first one.

The 7-Eleven microwave is (or should be) a commercial-grade appliance. Typically:
Higher power - heats the food faster
NSF certified for food safety, specifically, to be cleaned and sanitized thoroughly, which home microwaves are not particularly noted for
Restricted UI - push 1 for pastry, 2 for sandwich, 3 for pizza, 4 for soup, etc. No power levels, auto defrost, or cooking for an arbitrary time; just enough settings to be able to heat convenience store "food." Limits the shenanigans of stupid users (but doesn't eliminate them, obviously).
Rated for commercial use. Home appliances generally have a sticker somewhere that says they're not for restaurant or commercial use, and if a stupid customer started a fire and burned down the store, there's a good chance the store's insurance wouldn't cover it.

7-Eleven has a reputation around here. My reaction was more like
Someone blew up a gas station microwave by heating their urine in it
Wat?
It was a 7-Eleven.
Oh, that makes sense now. Carry on.

Clearly the urine setting is number 1. I recommend not trying number 2

In Pennsylvania, there's a chain of gas-station-convenience-stores called "WaWa." Despite sounding like they were named by a thirsty 2-year-old, they're actually fairly nice.
I remember when a friend told me about them upon finding out I was moving out that way:
: We've got WaWa out here. You'll love it.
: Huh?
: It's like this big store where you can get gas and snacks and all sorts of stuff.
: Oh, like 7-11?
: Like 7-11 if it didn't utterly suck.

Given the abuse they have to cope with from customers, they're going to have to be slightly more heavy duty than a $40 one from Walmart.

Apple should take note of what is a "pro" laptop
-
@timebandit Apple's the only one putting the MacBook Pro to shame.
Basically every laptop maker who isn't Apple has 3 better models in their lineup right now.
The Orxy Pro puts the user in the driver's seat, with the ability to control battery life and performance using switchable GPU's. This feature allows the user to move from high demand tasks, to ultimate portability and battery life, at the switch of a button.
You know if you installed OS X or Windows on it, you wouldn't have to "switch a button". (Whatever the fuck that even means.) It'd just work transparently.
