That definitely takes some getting used to.
Driving manual (with some practice) is like walking: you don't have to think about it, you just do it :)
-
@TimeBandit I was talking about switching to automatic actually. I live in the UK, have always driven manual and recently bought an automatic.

When driving in the forest there are a lot of times where I need to shift down to keep the car in control when corning, there are a few turns where if I went round in third I would probably end up on the other side of the road.
As mentioned above, many modern automatics have the option of effectively sequential shift. Mine has a hold button that keeps it out of the topmost gear, and three different drive settings, the difference between which I haven't quite worked out
-
@Jaloopa The thing is that all of this sounds more complex than driving a manual. I don't think think about it, I just kinda just do it.
As I said I don't know I haven't been driving that long and only driven a manual. I kinda would like to be able to put the car like an automatic when in a traffic jam and when driving on a motorway I would like to be able to have cruise control (I will probably mod my car for that as adding cruise control is as simple as changing the indicator stick).
-
@TimeBandit said in In other news today...:
how does an automatic would be more relaxing ?
Automatics work better with cruise control. Especially with adaptive cruise. Makes a hell of a difference (and yes, I've done both).
-
@lucas1 said in In other news today...:
cruise control
You can get that on automatics and manuals.
I'm not trying to sell automatics. I know some people who reckon they'll never go back to a manual but I still like having a gearstick and don't plan on buying another automatic unless, like this one, it comes up at the right price when I'm in the market for a new car.

Sorry, I really don't understand how an automatic works better with cruise control. With adaptive cruise, maybe.
I get to 5th gear, set my cruise to 115 km/h and then just drive. Would be the same end result with an automatic.

The only problem I have when driving an automatic is, every time I brake, my left foot is frantically searching for the clutch
-
@Jaloopa Yeh, As I said I can fit a second hand indicator stick and get it if I want (it doesn't look too difficult but I may get a friend who is quite handy with cars to help me).
I'm not trying to sell automatics
Yeah I appreciate that it is something I might consider with my next car (probably get a merc) so it is mildly interesting to hear about.

I don't see how you could even say that. With an automatic, you put it in Drive and you're done until you get where you're going. You don't have any reason to touch the shifter again. With a manual, even if it becomes subconscious, you're still shifting constantly (if you're in city traffic, anyway).

He was talking about times when you use Hold, or one mf the three Drive modes.
I have never used these, except when trying to work out what they do. I imagine the situations where you need them are much more complicated in a manual
-

I've never had a car with those, so all I know about them is what I read in car reviews. My minivan has an Overdrive Off button and that's it--I'm not sure what circumstances I might find myself in where it'd even be useful to me. (Which isn't the same thing as saying it's useless.)
-
@FrostCat Hills, basically. Limit your speed going downhill without having to use the brakes constantly. Or having it shift every time you hit a 0.5% up grade.
-
@HardwareGeek Ok, I guess that makes sense, if you're going fast enough where O/D would kick in. And also lived in a place that was hilly enough. :) Dallas is relatively flat.
-
@FrostCat I live in the new forest and it can get pretty hilly, but you can't go to fast. Leave the diesel in 3rd gear and it won't go past 45 unless you touch the gas.

It was like that where I lived in South Carolina, although I didn't have an O/D Off on the car I had then, either.

@FrostCat These things tend to be in the road
And just because this pony was cute:
EDIT: another pic

@lucas1 I've seen these guys in Dallas, although only next to the road:
And one of these:

@FrostCat I don't want to see the second one up close. I think we hunted most of the predators to extinction (at least in the UK it was mainly wolves).
What are those small dogs? Coyotes? I honestly don't know.

Ignoring the obvious "you're safe in your car (as long as the windows are up)", they're not actually as big as you might think from that picture. And also what I saw might've been a bobcat, not a cougar. It was 50 feet away in among brushy forest so I couldn't exactly measure it. :) Lot bigger than a housecat, though.
-
@FrostCat on a slightly related topic to your news report.
I was on my bicycle near sunset and I was riding back home through the forest. I was riding downhill (there is about a mile or two) and there were deer running next to me (I think I was doing maybe 20mph) and didn't know I was there because I was silent. For about 2 minutes it was a most amazing experience, they were just around me.

@Boner 10 of the 15 flats all belong to people other than the ones who think they bought them, and somehow that's the fault of the 10 individual purchasers, who apparently all screwed up their purchases in exactly the same way, and not the fault of the solicitors who processed the title of all the purchases. Yeah, and if you believe that, perhaps you'd be interested in purchasing this lovely bridge.

Cruise control isn't exclusive to automatics though...
-
@Tsaukpaetra so I learned after I posted that. Fortunately we've mostly left that obsolete technology behind and the last manual transmission I used was built in the 80s.

I have a manual Tacoma bought in 2011. It's pretty gutless though...

Mr Christ recalled: āWhen I was here 2,000 years ago I was teaching these people how to live in harmony with the spirit and it was all to do with nature; grow your own food, eat fruit and veg and only drink water.
Ā
Heās now drawn up a new manifesto with policies including weekly bin collections, free bus passes for those over 60, getting rid of TV licences and children being taught at home by their parents.

He said: āTwo thousand years ago I went against the government. I told them who I was, what I was here for and that the people were going to have a better life. They got rid of me because I went against the government. They crucified me.

āIām hoping by 2020 Iāll be in a position to stand.ā

Indeed. I was out in the Colorado Rockies recently, where all the roads go up or down the mountains, and I-70 has about fifty thousand runaway truck ramps. I'd routinely limit my rental car's automatic transmission to a medium-high gear to keep from cooking the brakes on a 4+% down slope.

Research lead Professor Mark Wilcox said: āNext time you dry your hands in a public toilet using an electric hand dryer, you may be spreading bacteria without knowing it. You may also be splattered with bugs from other peopleās hands.
āThese findings are important for understanding the ways in which bacteria spread, with the potential to transmit illness and disease.ā
The earlier study was funded by the European Tissue Symposium. A spokesman for Dyson said at the time: āThis research was commissioned by the paper towel industry and it's flawed.

But I think adaptive cruise control is. Which is really at its best when you're driving through a long stretch of roadworks where there are speed restrictions and heavy traffic, such as on the M5 south or Birmingham or the M1 past Sheffield or the M60 near Manchesterā¦

Purely for the headline. Article, not so much.

@DogsB to be fair, they've amended the headline to now include her name.

@Boner So long as they start referring to her SO as āMitch Unrein, husband of Olympic bronze medallist Corey Cogdellā¦ā there's no foul.

One of the games, 'Counter Strike: Source', was a game "played by nearly every known rampage killer", according to the president of Bavaria's crime office, Robert Heimberger.
Especially this line... I drink water I must be a spree killer in the making.
