If the benefits of marriage is the only thing holding your relationship together, I would suggest that you're probably doing it wrong. If it's not, then you don't need the benefits of marriage to cement that. (But if you still want to get married for personal reasons, that's OK too.)
And there's a gigantic area between those two extremes.

It looks like some people don't want to invest in zoos anymore. Like in this 2017 news item: "Come see our rare and exotic animals", stay for the lousy tortoise, common geese and... inflatable penguins.

@JBert One of the most entertaining things on exhibit at Tucson's Reid Park Zoo when I was there a few years ago was the bunch of stray kittens that had found a back entrance into the rhino enclosure. I'm not sure if the kittens realized the rhinos were there; I'm pretty sure the rhinos didn't notice the kittens.

Does slack allow you to run / serve it locally? If not, I'm sure we'll drop it.

No, that's why we went with Mattermost

@Boner I'm really curious as to what exactly his plan was.... lmao

@Boner I'm pretty upset that they won't let monkeys smoke. All in all it seems fine to me.
Monkeys don't live long enough to develop lung cancer anyway.

@boomzilla So sorry, old chap, invisible hand, you know, this is obviously the correct thing to happen.

Now, if only pestilence could kill off slack as well.

@ChaosTheEternal That type of star looks a bit better already.
A proper troll would have chopped off a few pounds of bronze from some confederate asshat monument's pompous horse, re-cast it at home
<--- into this shape
and properly installed it in broad daylight with a fake maintenance crew

wasn't about to be bullied by someone who'd lived there for a few months
There is a racetrack south of Montreal that opened in 1970 when there was only farms in that area.
Somebody built an housing project near it, and now the residents there are complaining about the noise on the weekend
When I moved into my house, one of the disclosure papers (pretty sure I had to sign it too) was that I'm near the flight paths of 2 airports (San Jose and Moffet Field). There's a thread on NextDoor (which I've blocked) of 'OMG The FCC changed the flight paths!!! There's airplanes flying over us!' Well, no shit you dumbfuck. You knew that when you moved here!

@heterodox I answer in pots, because 6 vs 8 vs 12 oz is a lot of ambiguity.
Yeah. It's 2 coffee cups. 6 on the pot.

Been there; done that. Though not both at the same time. Although ... it turns out that where I'm living now, I'm close not only to Moffett Field, but also the SFO and inclement-weather SJC approaches.

... That's not how this works, Foxconn. If you want to be under U.S. regulations, you set up in the U.S. Of course, then you'd also have to pay U.S. wages.
Hmmm, I wonder how Foxconn's wages in China compare to U.S. minimum wage?
With basic hourly pay at $2.50, overtime will cost Foxconn $3.75 to $5 an hour. (from 2012)
I see an interesting trolling opportunity for Chinese regulators here.
But it seems Foxconn are expanding U.S. production as well, apparently in part over trade war concerns.
It will break ground on a $US10 billion factory in Wisconsin next week
-
@Scarlet_Manuka So they say that they think US laws should apply to them, but only the laws that would be favorable to them?
Somehow I'm not surprised...
-
@anotherusername Pretty much. I would love the Chinese to say "OK, you want U.S. regulations? No problem." and then go after them for minimum wage, OSHA, EPA... I'm sure there are plenty more. Lots of regulatory paperwork that they should be filing, certainly.
I mean, come on. It's a pretty basic tenet of civics that you don't get to pick and choose which laws to follow.
-
@cvi said in In other news today...:
The legal system doesn't need to be involved.
Except that some of the actual lynchpin non-tax benefits are very much to do with the legal system. Things like powers of attorney for medical matters are really quite expensive to have drawn up separately, yet they're an automatic part of marriage. (A will is a much cheaper document, unless your estate is stupidly complicated.) Marriages are not just for children, even though that's one of the main reasons.

Lots of big businesses do exactly that with taxes…

We chose HipChat because it allows us to have the server be local, not in someone else's datacenter. Slack is blocked at the firewall.
Hipchat Server and Hipchat Data Center will also be discontinued and Atlassian said it is working on a “migration path” for its customers.
Well, fiddlesticks!

uBlock has been acquired by the team responsible for AdBlock.
This is why I installed uBlock Origin (forked by the project's creator) after the original uBlock maintainer did some sketch stuff.

Yeah, that's probably the only benefit that might make me consider HipChat. Everything else.... I just have complaint after complaint.
Especially on their Mobile App. You best avoid landscape mode if at all possible...

There's also the Apple way of landscape mode: disable it and only have a portrait layout, because using a music app in landscape mode on a phone is .

Things like powers of attorney for medical matters
In the US, some states don't have that automatically. IIRC, North Dakota doesn't, but South Dakota does...
My mother's best friend didn't have POA-Medical drawn up by an attorney and when her husband was evac'd to N.Dakota from S.Dakota due to a severe ATV accident, she had to get an attorney involved in order to have any say in his medical care.I mentioned, a while ago, that marriage is not a substitute for actual legal planning as marriage "rights" are subject to a large amount of whimsy.
Edit, I got that backwards, she did have the POA-Medical and would have been up shit creek w/o it...
Getting old and can't remember shit + sucks on ( but not as bad as it was on )

@mott555 I'd assume if it was too nasty there wouldn't be people swimming in it. Then again, Sweden is the home of surströmming.
-
@loopback0 This wasn't, as far as I saw, a subway tunnel per se either, it was an underpass, so there's fewer CHUD leavings in the water if any.
