status: chirurgically removing shit from windows so I can fit it on a 8gb compute stick. It's end use will be a picture frame. Wondering if it would be more effective to shove a tiny Linux on it instead.
But then I would have people asking me how to Linux.
Sounds like Linux or even using a Raspberry Pi instead would be a better option. There's almost certainly something available so you can get it to the point that someone just needs to pop the pictures on there and off they go.
You would think? But the closest I found was some paid Cloud thing that requires a subscription and doesn't work for my needs.
XBMCKodi? Magic Mirror?Renamed that for you.

Google it.
It's software that people use to make those "magic mirror" things:
It'll display images from folders, Google Drive etc (additional modules required possibly)
A "magic mirror" is basically just a picture frame with different glass.

Yes.

Same thing. Googling XBMC still returns the right results.

Used that. They require a subscription now and their old client is a bit too broken. And it requires a whole setup that's vastly more complicated than "dump pictures here and music there and it plays them for you"

You could easily write something in Python to do that

Status: Windows used to actually search Windows Update right there in the Update Driver dialog.
Now it just opens up the useless Settings App, which natch doesn't tell you if it could or could not find said driver from Microsoft.

Same thing. Googling XBMC still returns the right results.Ended up doing this. Used some elec whatsit version and it basically just-worked (as far as installation is concerned). Moving over the folder of pictures and music went pretty smoothly too. Here's to hoping nobody will ever need to do it ever again.
Found an add-on called "party mode" which can automatically start playing music at boot, and a visualization plugin that seemingly uses the pictures folder as expected.

Are you saying that this linux can run on a computer without windows underneath it, at all ? As in, without a boot disk, without any drivers, and without any services ?
That sounds preposterous to me.If it were true (and I doubt it), then companies would be selling computers without a windows. This clearly is not happening, so there must be some error in your calculations. I hope you realise that windows is more than just Office ? Its a whole system that runs the computer from start to finish, and that is a very difficult thing to acheive. A lot of people dont realise this.
Microsoft just spent $9 billion and many years to create Vista, so it does not sound reasonable that some new alternative could just snap into existence overnight like that. It would take billions of dollars and a massive effort to achieve. IBM tried, and spent a huge amount of money developing OS/2 but could never keep up with Windows. Apple tried to create their own system for years, but finally gave up recently and moved to Intel and Microsoft.
Its just not possible that a freeware like the Linux could be extended to the point where it runs the entire computer fron start to finish, without using some of the more critical parts of windows. Not possible.
I think you need to re-examine your assumptions.

Is that globalocalization by Windows 10?It's not Windows 10, it's Raspbian + custom NodeJS / Electron software:

Microsoft is (allegedly) replacing the icons in Windows 10 later this year. To the surprise of exactly no one, most of the new "modern" icons actually look worse and/or more outdated than the old ones.
This is what happens when a company has too much money and too many employees. You have to find something to keep all those people busy, so you end up with dumb pointless shit, like changing icons.

And yet, after ten years and countless iterations, they haven’t managed to condense their 20 versions of the systems settings into one place.
Maybe because deep down even the MS devs know the current design that fits about 3 sliders on a 4K screen is awful.

It's very easy to name at least 20 things that should have been fixed by now, but haven't. Fixing things requires actual work. Playing around with MS-Paint designing new icons is much more fun.
