Speaking of Windows Update
Edit:
In a test by BleepingComputer this morning, a brand new install of Windows 10 using the latest ISO from Microsoft created a 522MB WinRE partition. However, even this new install has a partition that is too small, causing the KB5034441 security update not to install and display a 0x80070643 error.
It gets better!
Unfortunately, BleepingComputer has been told by a Windows 10 user that this update failed on their device even with a Windows RE partition that is 1 GB in size. Therefore, there is no guarantee these steps will resolve the issue.

@Applied-Mediocrity Windows could learn a thing or two about re-packing initramfs.

Who has a computer with less than 64TB of storage anyway? - Bill Gates, probably.

Fuck. My VM just ran into this. Applying
allowed the update to work.

@Gern_Blaanston I didn't size that partition. I just followed exactly all the (many) steps outlined in the link above. No idea what size it set it to, forgot to look.

@dcon said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
No idea what size it set it to,
250MB larger than it was previously, assuming it was in a partition later than the OS partition.

And only my VirtualBox VM had the issue. The HyperV one upgraded fine.

I'm for it. The increase in red tape and bureaucracy would probably slow their rate of releasing dodgy updates significantly.

Status: Semi-impressed with Windows Update. Ran three updates and it only took one quick reboot. No waiting for the % to creep up or anything. Still took 15 goddamned minutes to install 3 updates, so not that impressed.

The installation of updates yesterday was quick. The boot loop (probably caused by weird driver shenanigans) wasn't so speedy...

@izzion It's like the damn thing is haunted by mysterious crashes, both of applications (such as Chrome and Steam as well as various games) and the OS. They are not at all consistent either, though I've seen far more system thread exceptions than I ever wanted.
The event log was always uninformative.

I've had some instance where the first pass found nothing, but the second or third did. I usually let it run all night to be sure.

For me it was the opposite. They did a brain scan and they found something, which was unexpected.

Windows just shut down without warning for updates, closing the applications I had open and making me lose transient state I can't recover. I was even actively using the computer. Just fucking shut down while I was scrolling through a web page.
And now I get this: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/windows-10-update-error0x80070643/e6473fa4-f2d4-42c3-b4be-266b43454306
Thank so you fucking much.
Fucking hell. Why do I have to go try and mess with Group Policy to try to stop this stupid think from happening.
-
@Zecc For me I can get the same experience if I run my work laptop with Windows. Because of corporate’s mandatory software manager that will force reboot your computer at any time, because it found an update or something. There are 16 hours of the day where I wont be using my computer, why are you forcing a reboot during the 8 when I do use it?
-

At a glance I thought that was a USB connector on the left-hand side and I was briefly confused.

It's a work laptop, can't do the work outside of work hours unless you're paid overtime

Because (pick one or more as appropriate)
- Nobody leaves their work laptop on
- People leave "absolutely critical tasks" running overnight that can't be interrupted so help me dog or you'll have basically killed the Queen
- They gave you multiple opportunities to opt into a reboot when it wouldn't disrupt your work and you ignored them all, so the least bad option left is to do a force reboot
- They get a bonus based on the number of hours of wasted work they inflict due to mandatory reboots.

This is not Windows forcing the reboot, but a third-party software manager instead. And that one doesn't give a flying fuck about active hours.
