WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else

It is true, they have failed in their updating. Probably because they moved it to GitHub:
That being said, I'm surprised they hadn't tracked down that previous link and redirected it by now. I've been using that GitHub for years and I know other MSDN documentation links to it.

but re-opening every program/project/etc is way more time consuming.
It is if your computer is dog-slow and you use ancient software which doesn't register itself to be relaunched upon reboot.
I hibernated my laptop as usual, but I don't know if it is because I've accidentally left it plugged into the mains this time, it decided to reboot for updates without asking me.
Firefox restarted with all my tabs. Only these other third-party apps failed to reopen their windows: file explorer, Visual Studio, Powershell.

:Not really a WTF.... Updates have started (and some may have completed). One (or more) of them has set a flag indicating a restart is required...
-
@levicki Considering the time differential, there has to be some sort of time travel involved. And time travelers simply can't kill Hitler (with one notable exception), so... Trump?
-
@levicki So in other words: You would shoot yourself twice, because someone would hit the restart flag (since you didn't shoot Hitler or Trump) but the rollback failed (because Gubbermemt) and you had to redo from start?
-

You involved rollback simultaneously with time travel. What did you expect?!?

Apparently Microsoft broke Defender.

Apparently Microsoft broke Defender.
According to the article, this bug was introduced while Microsoft was trying to fix a bug they introduced with the July 2019 Patch Tuesday, where they broke the sfc (system file checker) command.
-
@Tsaukpaetra that's one way to have zero threats found
-
-
@levicki when they said Windows 95 era, they really meant it.
-
@levicki yeah you really have to be careful with these very early prototypes of possibly future os features targeted at an extremely small subset of the userbase who probably aren't stupid. Maybe they should test them more.

Don't let @pie_flavor hear you, lest he come here to tell us that Microsoft should just remove SFC and Defender because everything is running just fine without them anyway.
He's not entirely wrong.
I have only run sfc once in my entire life and found it to be useless. It reported that there were corrupted files, but wouldn't tell me which files, it said that it couldn't repair them, and my computer continued to run just fine with no problems. Thanks Microsoft. That was really helpful.
Defender is only useful if you are a cheapskate who just absolutely won't pay for software.

Anyone who has ever touched a piece of computer code knows one fundamental truth -- every time you change something, even if it is a seemingly trivial change, you run the risk of introducing new bugs and fucking things up in ways that are not immediately obvious.
This is why Windows 10 is a buggy pile of shit and why Microsoft's "new version every 6 months" is beyond stupid.

Defender is pretty decent nowadays, especially with virtualization-based security additions.
So much depends on circumstance. For example, my "exposed" machines have much tighter security (and high end malware/virus programs); my "internal" machines much less so (and in many cases Windows Defender is sufficient).

And open-source the whole thing so anyone can verify how secure the code is?

@levicki said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
The problem is -- patches might end up being higher quality work than that of the MS developers.
Would that actually be a problem though?

Coming soon to the Calculator app, a feature available to any app running on KDE since basically forever
Over the next few days we’ll be starting to roll out a Calculator app update to Insiders in the Fast ring. This app is most notable because it adds the ability to put Calculator in an Always on Top mode!
Innovation

I wouldn't mind if I didn't need to use my little power toy utility to make this possible for any arbitrary app...
-
@Magus said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
I'm not sure how to feel about this.
On one hand, the Windows 95 PowerToys were cool.
On the other hand, Windows 10 is already buggy enough in its default configuration ; tweaking it may make it even worse (and I bet the tweaks would get reset by an update sooner or later, anyways).

Yeah, my title bar is configured to show an always on top button left of minimize. Yet another reason Gnome and its “let’s show decoration-less windows and draw our own crap with buttons in there” can go fuck right off.
On a trip down memory lane, this reminds me: back as a teenager when I played around with the Win32 API (on XP, I think) I realized you can send messages to windows in other processes (what allows shatter attacks). So I built a little tool like Spy++ but instead of logging it could send arbitrary messages, and call some other nice functions. I could also use that to just put programs in always-on-top mode. It was pretty fun to “crack” expired shareware by just sending a
WM_ENABLE
to a disabled button (or callEnableWindow
, don’t remember if that’s the same).Last time I needed such a function I just downloaded a small tool like TurboTop.

Isn't that just the Insider program?
-
Not quite. If you're running an Insider edition, you don't get to choose which features you want to enable, and they're no guarantee the extra features won't get deleted in the next versions. You're basically running an alpha version of the OS.

INB4 the reason there's no Windows 11 is that it's never been stable enough for a production release.
