It's Thursday! That means it's time for another 10 minute restart.
EDIT: Seriously. So much for "fast restarts." This shit never completes!

It was deeper than that, all profiles were affected.
@levicki said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
backup your data and settings
This machine has no local data, everything is pulled from down from a file server, so that bit is nice and easy.
As this machine is on the production line and now functioning again there won't be anything more done to it until/if it fails again. And that will most likely be a full re-image.Edit: I could come in on a weekend and re-image it, but they won't pay me for that, and

Now my customer provided laptop: I woke it up and it was having problems finding the smart card. Well, it was fine to log in but then it kept having "issues" when it tried to connect to the vpn. The vpn software wasn't being responsive so I decided to restart.
At this point I got a blue screen telling me that Windows needed to restart (duh! I just told it to do that) but there were "some problems." There was a QR code. That took a few minutes, and then a few minutes of spinning more to restart.
Next a spinner after logging in. Yay.

Weeeeeeee! It went to sleep while logged into the vpn. When I went to wake it, it told me that it couldn't contact a server to verify my card or some bullshit. So...back to restarting...yay! Stopcode!
Spinner....spinnner..."Please wait" spinner....OK...let's see if connecting to the vpn before I login helps. "Welcome" spinner (seems like a good sign). I'm into my account!
Message: "Windows needs your current credentials. Please lock and unlock the computer." You fucking fucks. I'm not falling for that one again.

@boomzilla Just ask your friend @pie_flavor from Earth-73 to help you out. I hear the kids these days are good with computers and happy to help their not so technically inclined elders with these electronic gizmos.

Status: After waking up my machine this morning, some Intel graphics thing (at least, it had something like gfx in its name) crashed. And the screen stayed black instead of showing my desktop. Then the timecard reminder nagware had some issues after I told Windows to restart. The "not responding" dialog came up quickly and I told it to kill the nagware.
But instead of restarting...just sitting there with a black screen. Well, "sign out" worked. Now trying to restart from the login screen. Spinnner...Oh! it actually restarted pretty quickly.

@El_Heffe What crazyness caused you to pick that date?
Through a series of complex calculations, I tried to estimate when Microsoft would have most of the bugs worked out of Windows 10.
11-11 was the number that came up on the dice.

Maybe you haven't noticed that nearly all of the recent ransonware attacks have not been the result of systems that aren't properly updated. Almost all have been the result of a booby-trapped e-mail which exploits a design flaw (aka a "feature"). For example, a Microsoft Word document containing a macro which launches a Powershell script.
You can be as updated as updated can be, and it won't help when the user clicks on that e-mail attachment.

@TimeBandit Joking aside, do you even remember Blaster worm?
Yes
I remember using 56k dial-up modem to connect to the internet at the time and my Windows machine getting infected with Blaster almost immediately after connecting. I couldn't even last long enough to download a hotfix. Since then, I update the OS as soon as the patch is out.
I was already safely using Linux
-
@levicki said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
Then you do believe in patching yourself because Linux is constantly updated as well.
There is a difference between keeping an OS pretty much up to date, and dropping everything you're doing to apply every update as soon as it comes out because SECURITY .
This was the inspiration behind my signature

I'm still waiting on those Heartbleed and spectre and meltdown hacks. Either that or, they've been active all this time and haven't (noticably) done anything to any of my systems yet...

Thankfully Windows updates come every second Tuesday in a month so restarting once every 14 days is not such a hassle, or is it?
How do you people get by with that? I've just started shutting my machine down each night and starting it back up in the morning because letting it sit overnight (as seen upthread) resulted in even shittier behavior than normal.
-
@levicki said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:

Yes, it would be an hassle.
I guess that only people with crappy slow-ass computers hate and avoid updates nowadays -- in my company now everyone has an SSD and 8 GB of RAM so nobody is complaining about having to reboot for updates anymore because it doesn't take more than a minute to reboot and apply them.
Do you live on Earth-73?
Rebooting a computer may be pretty fast, but re-opening every program/project/etc is way more time consuming. For the average Joe that only browse the web, maybe it's not an hassle.
As for me, I leave the computer on even when going on vacation, and when I come back, I just login and continue where I left off.
You seem to suffer from this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_syndrome

Don't get me wrong - I'm not arguing against security updates, but you can't say nothing bad will happen.

@levicki said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
TL;DR -- you are bullshitting people that you are way too busy to install updates.
I don't run Windows, so I don't need to reboot to install updates. Debian FTW
People who try to do that in my organization get a forced reboot if they don't do it on their own when asked.
Nobody can force-reboot my machine. I am the only administrator of it

Yes, and kernel updates comes down every other week

@levicki said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
I can because it is true.
You can't - because even if you have your OS (whether it's Windows, Debian or whatever) completely up to date doesn't mean there's not some sneaky cunt out there with an exploit that's not been fixed yet or even might not be known by the vendor yet.
-

Correct. Which is why I said it was less likely. You cannot categorically say that nothing bad will happen.

My home desktop (Win7) is always on, but I made the terrible mistake of installing security updates last weekend. I don't know if it was the Windows update itself, or the Chrome update that installed itself when I restarted Chrome, but Chrome has been completely, utterly unusable since then. Several minutes to open a new tab, tens of seconds just to scroll a few lines. I don't think it's just Chrome, though, because IE seemed rather slow, too, although nowhere near as bad as Chrome.

@topspin I had to go change some accounts to normal user (not admin), but that's because they're supposed to be student accounts on classroom computers and the IT guys figured giving them admin access (instead of making a common local admin for me to use to install, update, and maintain crap) was easier.

Not to mention waiting for Windows to do its actual update stuff and watching the spinners. Both before and after rebooting.
