The quasi Official Stupid Ideas that have actually been done thread

Continuing the discussion from BotCore testing:
Candidate for the non-existent Stupid Ideas Thread: I just re-initialized @MottBott's markov chain to his own post history.
Because Rule 34 Corolary #1
If none can be found it shall be made.
i think this post itself probably counts for the first entry.

Since we don't, yet, appear to have enough material for an Idiotic Ideas Thread:Brinjal As A Passive Smoke Due To Its Nicotine Content
In short, eating vegetables that have a 'high' (FSVO) nicotine content (cf tomatoes, potatoes) is - apparently - equivalent to being exposed to second hand smoke.
Brinjal [ed - eggplant/aubergine] may be a common delicacy on the Indian dining plate, but the humble vegetable is also a potent source of passive smoking and resultant cancers because of its nicotine content, reveals a study.
Since it's usually the burning of tobacco leaves that causes the carcinogens thought responsible for cancer, it's unclear how they think nicotine (even in the amounts found in vegetables) is causing cancer, since nicotine itself isn't generally considered a carcinogen.
-
If someone just ate an aubergine and burps in your face, is that third hand smoke?
-
If someone just ate an aubergine and burps in your face, is that third hand smoke?
No. Third hand is seeing what's left of it in the garbage and being mentally anguished that you've been exposed.
-
That peeves me out about people who want to outlaw e-cigs.
Some people aren't opposed to the health effects of smoking, they're opposed to the very idea and anything that even slightly reminds them that smoking, or tobacco, or nicotine, even exists should be illegal.
-
"it normalises smoking"
Have these people ever seen a modern e-cigarette? It's more like an asthma inhaler than a cigarette.

I'm with you there. While I do not like smoking at all, it's because it stinks. On the other hand, e-cigs do not. They are genuinely non-offensive that way. They also won't be mucking up my health to any significant degree; it's the tars from actual smoking that I object to. (I suppose the carbon monoxide isn't good either, but that will probably not be a significant factor in second-hand smoke as it will bind very readily to the smoker's blood cells.)
Given that e-cigs don't mess other people up when used in even a vaguely reasonable fashion, there's no reason for denying people the use of them in a public or semi-public space. (Private spaces use the owners' rules.) Health nazis can take a hike.

The problem is not so much in the smoke that the smoker exhales; as you say, a lot of the bad stuff gets left behind in the smoker's body. The smoke produced when the cigarette/cigar/pipe is smoldering likely contains a higher concentration of CO than that produced while the smoker is actively inhaling the smoke. Sucking air through the tobacco increases the O2 available to support combustion, which means more of the tobacco can burn completely to CO2 rather than CO.

Your coworkers must have better e-cigs than mine.
My employer bans e-cigs from their building — and for 5 metres outside the entrances too, though that's only really honoured in the breach — but e-cigs are still definitely less noxious than real cigarettes. I still remember how bad things used to be (at work, in bars and restaurants, etc.) and I've worked with smokers for a number of years and they become a lot easier to be around when they switch. The silly thing is that e-cigs are cheaper here than normal tobacco products AIUI yet some people persist in using the horrible traditional fix-dispensers…
-
I still remember how bad things used to be
At one job back in the bad old days, I sat next to a guy who smoked cigars all day. I do not miss those days. At. All.
-
-
yet some people persist in using the horrible traditional fix-dispensers…
Per my understanding the e-cigs don't get the same taste, but I've never tried one so can't say for sure.
-
I always saw smokers as people that made poor life decisions.
-
Some cigars are pretty nice.
No. Some are definitely more not-nice than others, but none are even in the same universe as "pretty nice."
-
They made a poor life decision a few times. But once you're into the "physical addiction" stage, I think you can spare a little sympathy. Because that shit sucks.

Sympathy for the addiction, yes, and for the effort it takes to overcome that addiction.
Some people see the addiction as a natural consequence of the earlier poor decision(s) and therefore the addiction deserves no sympathy. I'm not one of those sociopaths and don't think learning, growing people need to be punished or shamed (too much) for decisions made when they were younger and dumber.

Mine looks like a fucking club. Seriously, you could beat someone to death with it when the battery is in.
Given that e-cigs don't mess other people up when used in even a vaguely reasonable fashion, there's no reason for denying people the use of them in a public or semi-public space. (Private spaces use the owners' rules.)
Well, it's still bad etiquette to blow smoke in people's faces in a confined space, vapor or not.
Your coworkers must have better e-cigs than mine.
Really? Are they smoking kerosene in it, or what? Because all liquids I had are entirely odorless when blown.
The silly thing is that e-cigs are cheaper here than normal tobacco products AIUI yet some people persist in using the horrible traditional fix-dispensers…
I still get an occasional cigarillo or a cigarette, because the e-cigs are no match in terms of taste. Those so-called "tobacco" flavors? Fucking lies.
-

Are you the smoker? I've heard that smokers are sufficiently desensitized to the smell that the lessened smell of the e-cig is faint enough that they can't notice it at all, while I, as a non-smoker, still can.
-
-
Are you the smoker?
Yep, the one and only. </pedantry>
Occasional. But I've tested it on willing non-smokers, and all they could smell was a "slight sweetish tinge".
-

That could be it, but I've still not started picking up on the smell of e-cigs since I've quit (9ish months ago) so it might also be an expectation thing.

Agreed. I can smell the vapors on th e-cigs from my various co-workers who use them. The vapors also tend to make me cough.

Exorcists and paranormal investigators are urging people not to buy the occult board game Ouija as gifts unless they want to invite demonic forces into their homes this Christmas.
The warning comes as Google predicted that the modern version of the Victorian-era 'spirit boards' will be a sell-out this Christmas. The search engine company has confirmed the game, purportedly used to contact the dead through spelled-out messages, is one of the top trending gifts on its price comparison list this year following the release of the Ouija horror film last month.

Sounds like reverse psychology from the Ouija Maker's Guild.
Who doesn't fucking want demonic forces to distract from their irritating sister-in-law during Christmas dinner?
-
Sure, but assuming that really worked, it would be like burning down your house because you see a roach.
-
You haven't met my sister-in-law. Frankly, nuclear war would come as a relief.
-
What if the irritating sister-in-law is the demonic force summoned by a Ouija Board?

Meh, I like Catan better.
A friend and I got almost nothing but sheep one game. Now, whenever we see each other, we just ask "Need any sheep?", or she'll just start bleating like a lamb and laughing hysterically. My wife ended up winning that game since she got a more balanced resource draw.
-
We would occasionally randomize the number tiles and place them upside-down until everyone had placed their initial towns, so nobody knows what the probabilities are when placing. In one game, one player actually ended up starting on only 2's and 12's, and only drew 2 - 3 resource cards the whole game.

In lieu of a "Idiocy thread" - this one will have to do....
Since sugar, salt, alcohol etc are all "bad for us" and must be taxed for our own sakes - I present the next thing that's allegedly bad for us they're going to have a bash at taxing...
Oxygen might be vital for sustaining life, but scientists from the
University of Pennsylvania and University of California, San Francisco
(UCSF) have discovered inhaling too much oxygen from the air could in
fact be triggering lung cancer.
US researchers suggest way our bodies process oxygen is potentially carcinogenic

What do you know, I found not only one, but two lists of things that the Daily Fail says will give you cancer, and my search term autocompleted around about "daily mail thing..."

That list is pretty short. Those guys should ask the State of California.
