Here's my internet right now:
I have one YouTube video open on "auto" resolution, which equates to 144p with ten seconds of buffering interrupted by one second of video.
Nobody else in my house is using the internet.
This bullshit costs $35 per month ($33/month if you go into the store)
-
Wow. F-.
-
If your upload speed is 0,00, then how did you post it?
Filed under: at least it rate limits Dwarf Fortress screenshots
-
Is this ADSL? Either the line is noisier than a shopping centre at Christmas, or you're very far away from the exchange.
Care to post your attenuation stats?
-
It's just like how food with 2.4999 grams of fat are 100% fat free!
-
Wow, 6mbps ADSL1, no options for ADSL2. At least it's unlimited.
ADSL usually converges on particular speeds as distance/noise increases, so for what you're paying you may be able to go with a cheaper plan and still be getting the same speed you're actually getting.
-
That sucks
-
What speed are you supposed to be getting? I assume there are no other options in your area?
-
"Slower than 99% of US"
It's like speedtest is rubbing it in.
-
:-( <- for once that emoji is appropriate.

I’m guessing you can’t pause the video and let it load for one hour, because YouTube stops loading when paused?
-

The speed shown only has three significant digits? Could be it would measure if the program could be switched to b/s, or if he’s lucky, Kb/s.

Did you at least go to the store so you're not getting ripped off?
-
Maybe you could smirk change providers?
I'm sorry. That was mean.

Oh. I just buttumed the US had a single monopolising internet provider. I didn't realise there was a question. :(.

no, we have smaller, regional, monopolies. and they all suck (although milwaukeePC seems to be a bit of an outlier on the suck scale.)
-
-
Not everywhere.
the monopolies are dying, or at least getting stiff competition in the more urban areas of the country.
i want to get fiberoptic! thet're driving a trunk up through our town and splitting it down some streets. but not mine... the ones on either side though, they're getting it.
is it worth moving for fiber DSL? ... moving's a hassle and i have enough speed here for what i do.... but shiny! want!

Depends. Are you in an apartment or do you own? I've had FiOS for over 7 years and it's pretty awesome. I forget what speed we had originally. This morning speedtest is reporting about 33/33Mbps. There are higher speeds available here (and obviously elsewhere) but honestly it never seems like my end is the bottleneck.
-
apartment
this, but considering moving to house i own. we have cable adsl here so my down pipe is usually 20Mb which is more than enough to do what i do online. up caps out at 5Mbps, but that's why the
a
is there in ADSL.trying to wsork out if getting fiber and dropping the
a
is worth the hassle and expense (mostly of moving. if i owned and the fiber was coming down my street it would be no-brainer)
-
Holy crap...mail order floppy disk software purchases are probably faster than that ISP. I haven't seen a connection that slow since living outside of town in the middle of nowhere rural Missouri where our nearest neighbors (excluding cows and bobcats) were literally miles away, in 2002.
Actually, I think ours was faster. We had 256 Kbps DSL if I recall correctly.
-
Well, how godforsakenly empty is @ben_lubar's part of Wisconsin?
He might be living in a forest full of badgers , mushrooms and snakes and nothing else ...
-
-
My guess is Ben's Internet bytes are carried by badgers in some kind of woodland Pony Express-style system, one-at-a-time, with no physical-layer error detection resulting in the upper protocols constantly having to re-transmit.
-
Reminds me of this : http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/110603-tcpip-over-lego-model-train
That would probably be usable (for some definition of usable) at larger scales...
-

youtube-dl. From the website:
@The website said:youtube-dl is a small command-line program to download videos from YouTube.com and a few more sites. It requires the Python interpreter (2.6, 2.7, or 3.3+), and it is not platform specific. We also provide a Windows executable that includes Python. youtube-dl should work in your Unix box, in Windows or in Mac OS X.
Can continue partial downloads, reconnect on timeout, ...
-
Or use an online service like http://clipconverter.cc.
-
I don't see how that helps with his bandwidth limitations.
Another advantage of downloading Youtube videos and watching them from local disk is that you can use the media player of your choice, instead of having to use the Youtube webbased player.
-
It helps the same way as youtube-dl does: It lets you download the video and watch it offline. I don't know if youtube-dl also lets you convert the resolution and format before downloading, but I suspect since it's a client-side util, it doesn't.
-
which BTW they finally fixed ads in their HTML5 video player. i switched to using HTML5 to bypass those craptastically annoying preroll ads.... they figured out how to make those work in HTML5
-
is it worth moving for fiber DSL?
Not if you have a friend whose house has access to it and whom you can see if you each stand on your roof. Because then all you need to do is install one of these in each house.
-
to bypass those craptastically annoying preroll ads
Why is that more complicated than installing Adblock Plus and subscribing it to Easylist?
-
because for a long time it didn't recognize youtube ads, and i wanted to support the youtubers by allowing the unobtrusive ads.
-
Fuck advertising. Install ABP. If you want to support people, get in touch with them and arrange to drop $5 on their PayPal accounts every now and then. This costs less than the time you waste waiting for the ads to go away.
-
but i play KSP during the ads!
-
Oh. I just buttumed the US had a single monopolising internet provider. I didn't realise there was a question. :(.
If you are lucky, you live where you have a "choice" between: one cable internet provider, one DSL provider and *maybe one fiber provider. At my house I have a choice between one cable internet provider (Comcast)...and that is it. My neighbors across the street can get DSL/Uverse, but a few hundred feet away I am SOL. Other than that, I suppose I could get dialup.
We have been looking to move to a semi-rural area. Someplace with no neighbors and some land. In our city, those exist where you can get cable internet, but rarely come on the market. We have to have fast internet, and here your only option is cable.
-
AT&T's been neglecting ADSL here for 10 years due to pushing uverse. Milwaukee PC just sells internet running off the 10+ year old DSL architecture that was in place when it stopped getting upgraded.
-
I don't know if youtube-dl also lets you convert the resolution and format before downloading, but I suspect since it's a client-side util, it doesn't.
It doesn't let you convert before downloading (how could it; as you mentioned it is a client-side util: think of is at
wget
for Youtube).
It does allow you to specify the quality of the video to download. If Youtube offers a 1080p, 720p and 480p version, you can tell it to download the 480p version for example.
-
Around here it depends on the apartment complex. In this city, we have a really good cable provider for one ISP, and a sadistic DSL provider straight from the pits of Satan's bowels for the other ISP. They contract with apartment complexes so you can only get one or the other, you have zero choice in ISP.
Thankfully I'm in cable-land. My sister is in DSL land and gets like half what she pays for, if that, and it takes them 4 - 6 weeks to send out techs when something is wrong, and usually the techs say "Nothing's wrong, everything's working just like it should" even when you slap them in the face with a speed test showing your 5 Mbps DSL is only running at 36 Kbps.
Another WTF due to the apartment contracts is if you're in DSL land, you cannot get cable TV. The phone/DSL provider doesn't do TV so you're forced to get satellite. But I don't have/want TV service so that doesn't matter much to me.
-
but i play KSP during the ads!
Are the ads a requirement to play KSP?
I mean, I usually take a biobreak or make a drink during commercials on TV. Doesn't mean I can't shit or fetch a glass of water without some stupid ad blaring in the background ;)
-
Not everywhere.
Yeah; some places you get the choice between shitty cable and extremely shitty DSL.
Really, really, lucky people have fiber, either FIOS or Google Fiber, but that's really rare. In my State, Frontier (shit++) bought out Verizon's DSL/FIOS business and immediately cancelled all planned FIOS roll-outs. So that leaves only Comcast, or pay 2/3rds what Comcast charges for 1/5th the bandwidth.
Whenever you plan a move in the US, look up what Internet options you have first, is really the take-away here.

i don't often agree with blakeyrat, but when i do boy do i ever!
-
At least you're in the 99th percentile!
-
The thing is, I thought my house was pretty "good"-- we had full-on 128k DSL in 1997 before most of the country had even heard of it.
But that was Verizon, who I liked and thought did a good job. Frontier just fucked over everything. I was willing to give Verizon the benefit of the doubt and stay with them as long as I knew FIOS was coming eventually, but man.
When I called Frontier to cancel, they asked why, and I said: "because my bandwidth hasn't improved in 12 years, it can't improve with your current technology, and you're making no effort to upgrade your technology." For once, the operator didn't try to entice me to stay.

Do you live in SpeedTest?
-
hehe, I wish
-
Whenever you plan a move in the US, look up what Internet options you have first, is really the take-away here.
Agreed. It really shows you how bad the monopolies are also. Narrows your options drastically...
-
If that is from your home, color me impressed.
-
... bastard!
we want fiber DSL too!
-
I'm currently using ADSL via AOL outside of America...
-
If that is from your home, color me impressed.
Again, I wish. I don't get this type of speed with regular downloads, so I think that my company limits those, but somehow misses out on this speedtest.
