@DogsB I might surprise you. I usually design parts for 3D printing in metric. I can also convert between measurements fairly easily in my head. I also usually measure ingredients for baking in grams. It all depends on what I am doing.

so are you a calculated, metric arsonist or just plain crazy with moon units type?
just trying to help you out here ... if you ever, actually want to set fire to my house you better be prepared for the metric type ... we are close enough to Germany for it to be no joke

@Luhmann are you worried that I won't bring enough accelerant? I did my conversion. 12 milliliters should do it.
......or was that kiloliters?
Goddamn metric volumes.

The real test is whether you have a .223 or 5.56.

How do you get whatever you call this vehicle up to the speed needed for this jump?

Bulldozer, I guess. Schaktmaskin in swedish.
And I guess you'd need rockets to get it up in speed enough to catch air. Or modifications to the gearing. But you can jump big honking pieces of treaded machinery.

One comment mentioned the vision system being "blinded" by strobe lights. Sounds like an interesting theory to me.
Now, if only there were non-optical sensors you could fit in a car to avoid relying entirely on cameras...

I've once seen someone operate one of these on a space that was maybe two bulldozer lengths across, maybe less. Think sidewalk.
They were picking up dirt from a spot behind them and dumping it in front; or the other way around if you prefer. This required making U-turns in a relatively narrow space, but somehow they managed to make it turn around efficiently (when not carrying dirt at least) by backing up quickly, braking hard into a wheelie, and spinning 180 on its "back wheels" (or equivalent part of the tracks. I don't remember exactly, it's been a while, but I want to say it had tracks rather than wheels).
The distance between dirt pile and hole was a bit longer, so they'd then accelerate to get to the other side as fast as possible and then immediately switch into braking in a controlled slide. They did this repeatedly and with an ease that made it look like it was nothing. They were obviously quite experienced and wore that bulldozer like a glove. It was pretty cool to watch and looked super fun. They were also conscientious enough to only do that when there were no pedestrians around.

Yup, that really calls for interpreting the stop sign the way I was taught: First stop, then look if it's safe, and only after you've seen it's safe move into the intersection.
-
@PleegWat There are a bunch of intersections around here where, due to placement of bushes, buildings, and parking spots, if you stop at the stop sign you can't actually see oncoming traffic until it's too late. So you have to stop (for legal purposes), then creep forward, stop, and repeat. Except that by the time you can actually see clearly...you're far enough forward that you're in the main lane of travel.

@loopback0 The stop sign reminded me, for whatever reason, of how I drove through a small village near my hometown last month.
Y'see, shortly after the entrance to this village the main road does a sharp right turn on a hefty incline downwards. Up till now there had been a massive wall straight across the turn, along with one of those big reflective "sharp turn ahead" street signs. I had driven regularly through this village in earlier years and similarly regularly I saw either the sign dented, cracks in the wall or the wall actually partially caved in. We always joked that this turn kept the local mason in his job.
Now? Now there's neither a wall nor a street sign warning of this turn.
I guess next we'll hear about someone driving straight into the living room of the house which is also straight across the turn (and about 3 meters down - so if said someone speeds enough, he might just end up on the first floor instead).
Here's what I'm talking about (though the satellite image still has the wall):
Yes, the turn is not as sharp as it could be - but remember that it also goes down to the right and that it's only 30 meters behind the village's entrance. And up till the entrance there's a speed limit of 100 km/h. The usual idiots drive 120 to 130 on this road (it's rather wide and straight up till here) so there's plenty of potential to be way too fast...
-
@Rhywden said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:

Only 30 metres? I would think the town sign would be before the first house, so just past the butt of the teal arrow. And by the number of houses I'd guess that's at least a hundred metres.

The town sign is more at 1/2 of the arrow. Might be 40 meters. It's definitely not 100 m.

Dude, this is Germany. While all kinds of idiots whine about the number of speed traps, it's rather rare that you see one. And most of those are permanently placed - i.e. easily avoided by the locals.
-
@Rhywden I am suggesting a permanently placed one, and a fairly obvious one at that. We have a lot of speed traps here that show you red speed if you are over limit or green smile if under (to be less distracting or something). And sometimes they can also send the photos to local police and rarely they'll even try to fine people. Because it's a lot of work. The point is that there is a risk of it happening that scares the speeding morons into hitting the brake a bit sooner.
-
TL;DW: Police chase with the bad guys doing just about everything you can imagine wrong. Simple traffic stop for an improper turn. License plate on Dodge truck is registered to 1999 Oldsmobile. Flee. High speed. Ram police car. Get blocked in. Ram another police car, breaking the driver's side door off as the officer is trying to get out. Crash through train crossing in front of an oncoming train. Fail to dodge spike strip and lose all 4 tires. Repeatedly lose control because you're driving on the rims, which have zero traction on the road. Get blocked in again. Attempt to ram yet another police car, but fail because your rims still have zero traction. Make out with your female passenger while the police are ordering you out of the vehicle at gunpoint. Call your father on the cell phone and tell him you have a gun, resulting in the police calling in the SWAT team. Sit in the truck for 3 hours (still making out?) until the SWAT team finally tear gasses you out of the truck. Go to jail for a very long time (ramming a police car is assault with a deadly weapon against a police officer).
