They did have an exception if your phone was clearly marked as yours and you could prove that the camera would only take black or blurry pictues (e.g. by scratching the lens with sandpaper).

Oh, absolutely, and that's why the place I worked (Northrup Grumman) had the same policy.
Oddly enough they didn't have a policy on flash drives.

Yeah, I should have pointed that out. The Blackberry I was given was one of the first ones with a camera.
Also amusing, IIRC you could disable the camera through the Blackberry server software, and they never did.

Some sites insisted that my laptop - used to configure their equipment - could not come on site. Thus their equipment could not be configured, and would stay non-operational.
That particular discussion usually ended up with them paying for an extra day as the mornings got wasted each time their security staff changed.

Back when we used an appliance+heavy on-site consultancy model, a standard component of the appliance was a 'tools' directory, containing a large complement of windows tools including putty and firefox, so consultants could do their work on any customer-provisioned windows PC.

I wonder if they ever updated their policy.
My work still has the signs up stating no cameras on your phone, but there is no enforcement of that policy (and we also have the work issued ones have cameras). I think they didn't bother updating policy as that way they can use it against anyone that causes a problem by having a camera, but just ignore it for everyone else.

Intel used to require a permit to have a camera of any kind anywhere on the premises. Some time before I left, in recognition of the fact that this was effectively banning most phones, they relaxed to policy to allow cameras in most areas without special permission; however, they were still restricted in some areas like manufacturing and Document Control due to the possibility that one might photograph confidential information.
Instead of banning phones and cameras, why don't they just cut to the root and directly ban photographing confidential information?

Enforceability, as then they need to check what you are photographing vs just saying you aren't allowed to have one.

I didn't need the job. It was a part-time gig. At the time my real income came from being a construction superintendent. Besides the job giving me lots of opportunity to flirt with cute nurses and pharmacy techs, I really could have cared less if they fired me.

IT rules seem to be very draconian. As if blocking Facebook on the desktop has any impact when everyone uses smartphones. Blocking cameras prevents no one from using gmail to email the excel sheet to their personal mail.

Do you not have standing assessments (and approvals) to cover these sorts of regular and well known activities? It's not sane to require assessment and approval every time.
You'd think so, but there's nil guidance on that, so it seems that it's up to every individual manager/supervisor to put these in place. Also no guidance as to the allowed scope of standing assessments to allow for variation between specific tasks.

I know for a fact I suck at giving people time estimates.
I've gotten better at it, if I know the domain well. In that case I often tend to overestimate, leading me to say that I expect something to take three weeks of time ("and that is somewhat tight!"), and then in reality I'm done in just one week.

Let both coffee vending machines run out of coffee and don't fill them up for ... most of a week and counting (one ran out last Friday, the other on Monday).

You've got to be kidding. I'm a smoker and I hated places where it was allowed to smoke inside anything (bars, offices, hospitals, trains). I like smoking, but I like smoking my shit, not someone's else shit.

If I wasn't allowed to drink tea at work I would quit. And that's deathly serious. A quick office poll shows the heathen coffee drinkers feel the same way.
That would be a good way to turn your company into a ghost town from the look it.
