I would be interested in trying to generate game content/assets using state of the art machine learning methods, like GANs or variational auto-encoders.

@ben_lubar
Today I made an exercise for students about Perlin Noise and using it to procedurally generate textures or terrain. The end result:
You can do much more with noise functions, for example take 3D noise and threshold it to create 3D caves.

@adynathos That's something I've been wanting to learn. Terrain generation is pretty cool.

Status: Attempting to restart my PC (having let it fun for two weeks straight).
What language components?!?! Why are you installing? You said there were no updates (something I checked beforehand)!
Also discovered that if you wait, Windows will eventually stop showing that screen and drop you back to your (mostly dead) session. Wheee!!!
-
Status: Dreading tomorrow's flights, as the asshat who booked our stuff for this meeting (whom I mentioned earlier while bitching about the connection on the flight out here) apparently decided that short-ass connection times were the deal of the day, so I have to deal with them on the way back home, too. 30 minutes between arrival time of one plane and the departure of the next.
Means Plane 1 damn well better not arrive late or I'ma be PISSED.

Yeah, that's great when I go to reboot for updates and come back later and my computer's just sitting on my desktop, unlocked, with the monitor turned on.

- Game is procedurally generated, but generation happens during gameplay. For example, the intro cutscene and pre-built tutorial hide the generation (and entropy gathering) for the first region.
- Game is voice acted by TTS.
- The player can set their name pronunciation separately from its spelling, so Raymond Luxury Yacht can play the game without having to mess up his name.
- Some sort of time travel aspect where time paradoxes are resolved by having time travel move to an alternate universe.
- Some kind of decentralized multiplayer; either joining friends on their adventures or Souls-style invasions or both.
- Major progression is metroid-style, where new abilities are unlocked and can be used on old areas of the game to unlock additional content.
Unfortunately, I have zero ideas for the actual plot or setting of the game. Or even something as simple as how the gameplay would work. Or the genre.

A storm is not quite what I'd hope to get from eating bran.

Yup, no leaving alone your PC between selecting shutdown and it turning off.

You should have kiboshed that. Ain't no airport on Earth where a 30 minute connection is reasonable-- even the smallest.
It takes 20 minutes just to get off the plane.

And you generally have to be on the plane several minutes before scheduled departure.

Hit a log statement just before a static method call.
First thing in that static method call? Another log statement that doesn't get hit. App seems to hang there.
There's no static constructor, or fields that need to be initialized, so it SHOULD just fall straight into that method....

Status: One of my colleagues (who's also responsible for IT) just wrote on an offical mailing list that we should think about reducing WLAN because of electrosmog and stuff.
I wrote a small (respectful) essay for him why the electrosmog stories don't hold water.
I used some sources to strengthen my points (among them Spurious Correlations ). However, after scrolling down a bit, I'm not so sure anymore that correlation does not equal causation.
We definitely have to stop Nicolas Cage from making movies!

Status: One of the higher-ups in the decision chain raised an objection to our chosen future software because it doesn't have a dedicated hardware firewall. He said that it would only slow us down over time.
From my experience back when I was an admin for a students' dormitory with a symmetrical 1 Gbps connection and 500+ clients, our software solution on a pre-Sandy Bridge Dual Xeon never rose above 3% CPU time, even under full network load. And my school only has a symmetrical 50 Mbps connection so I'm not sure where he gets that from.

Just wait a bit, the screen will come back and the Cancelling box will still be there all on its own...

@blakeyrat Unfortunately that wasn't presented as an option because our travel agent, as previously indicated, is a dipshit. They basically said "There's a flight out of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday at 11AM, that OK?" I said yes, and then they gave me the whole itinerary already booked.
I'm now sitting in the Phoenix airport hoping that our flight out of here will end up with a tailwind and arrive early.
-
@e4tmyl33t Spend your time figuring out your options in case you miss the connection. A little research now might come in handy at the desk at the connecting airport later.

Instead of this dumb conversation, how about:
I just had some ridiculously hot food for lunch. The next volcano eruption will be in my bathroom, probably around 2 or 3 AM. If you live in the Midwest, you might want to preemptively evacuate.
I'm miserable. Whenever the office goes out for lunch and it's a new place, I always get the hottest item on the menu, and it's never a problem because hot food is never actually hot. But this time, they finally got me. Diablo Enchiladas. I went home early, sick. You know that feeling when you ate too much and you think you have a bowling ball in your gut? It's like that, but the bowling ball is made of molten tungsten. I took some Tums and just want to lie down and nap, but no amount of banging on the ceiling will get the undisciplined little brats in the apartment above me to quit dropping anvils on the floor. I am going to be praying for death when this starts coming out the other end.

@e4tmyl33t Well, thankfully our flight into Charlotte landed about half an hour early, meaning I had plenty of time to make it to my connection!
And plenty more time, since it's now an hour after our original boarding time and we're still standing at the gate, because our fucking flight attendants are missing.
Let me go home, you bastards!!!

But if you really didn't have access, I wouldn't think that it should notify you...

Status: I'm going to facepalm to death. My 3D printer has been mostly nonfunctional for the past two months. I've replaced the hotend, heater cartridges, thermistor, nozzle, and some parts multiple times while trying to get it working. I drilled out what I thought was an out-of-spec hotend. I disassembled everything, cleaned it, reassembled it all a million times. But I could not get a good print out of it. Extrusion issues, clogs, filament getting stuck in the hotend somehow. Pure frustration. I used up an entire roll of filament on failed prints.
I just switched to a different color of filament, and now the printer works fine. All this time, there was nothing wrong with the printer. I had a bad roll of filament.

Is it impolite not to go if you're going to be the recipient of one of the rewards?
Also, it feels weird to be accepting an academic award. Like you're endorsing it. There's no speech, but if there were, it'd be something like, "In the past two weeks, I've subsisted on basically nothing but pizza, cookies, and cookie dough when I really needed to just get the calories and move on. My body fat has spiked into the double digits. If I drank, I'm sure that'd be part of my diet as well; as it is, it's going to be at least a couple of months to repair the damage to my body. You can maintain a good GPA without being me. I encourage not being me. Thank you." :P

Now, I know I don't have that much, let's see what happens!
Wait, you mean you're not going to be using the $3.10 that's in my account?!?! I'm soooo glad you're storing my debit card info securely! How convenient!
"Normally, we don't need your password to verify you want to sent off all da muns, so anyone that happens to slide by can just go at it. But if you want, here's a condom."
Oh yay, looks like it's done?

@e4tmyl33t I still hurt and am exhausted from those flights yesterday. That flight out of Charlotte was delayed by an hour and a half, which meant I didn't land til almost 11:30pm. I slept for 9 gorram hours and I'm still worn out.
