Which is ironic because back when we were talking about alarm clocks a bunch of people were like "I use my phone as an alarm clock". So many that I actually adopted that habit and didn't bother setting up my old alarm clock. (Well also because my bedstand isn't big enough for it and my laptop.)
I use my phone as an alarm clock. The alarm actually plays a sound. All the other notifications are set to vibrate.

Now you're telling me I'm the mutant freak for wanting my phone to be capable of waking me up and what I should do is swaddle it in 47 lbs of cotton so it can't make any noises whatsoever.- alarm volume and ringer volume can be set separately
- a notification lasts for half a second. An alarm lasts until you snooze it or turn it off
-
@Jaloopa Yes I know I'm a stupid dumbass idiot moron and if I got woken up at 4 AM it's only because I'm such a worthless hunk of shit that I obviously deserved it, being both Hitler and Stalin combined. Thanks.
Please continue to pile-on so that I can be fully aware of what a piece of human garbage I am. Obviously I deserve it for treating a telephone like a telephone.
Oh and BTW:

That's great and all except THIS ASSHOLE ALWAYS SENDS LIKE 18 MESSAGES IN LIKE 2 MINUTES. Hell an actual phone call ringing would probably produce less noise.
-
@blakeyrat Okay lots of technical suggestions upthread but I'll get to the root of it. If you get rid of said friend from your life how much of a negative impact is it gonna have? Is that an option?
-
@stillwater I foolishly took a job where I have to work on the same team as him. Because we WERE such good friends that he recruited me. Maybe I should quit. Quit and live in a ditch. Covered in garbage. I'm sure I deserve it, as half of DailyWTF is now busy posting.

I'm still frustrated with fucking Google for not giving me any better tools to deal with this and with my friend for being so fucking rude. Keep in mind: 1) he's in the same time zone so he knows I'm asleep, and 2) he's been doing this for MONTHS before it finally reached a boiling point and I had to confront him about it. (None of the hints I gave before worked.)
What you need to deal with this "friend" is not sold by Google

Ah, well that's different. This guy is an arsehole and it's as much a people problem as a tech problem

Anyway I know I'm an old fogey dinosaur, but when I grew up calling someone at 4:00 AM about a trivial matter was THE MOST RUDE MOTHERFUCKING THING YOU COULD DO. I dunno when society changed around me, but I guess I missed the memo that now that's perfectly ok apparently.
It did? My experience is that it changed in the other direction.
It used to be people would call each other all the time, for all sorts of reasons. But these days, we use mostly chat. If there is a call to be made, it is carefully announced and arranged ahead of time.
Unannounced calls, especially on an actual telephone, are for old people and emergencies.

HOW THE FUCK WOULD I KNOW WHAT NUMBER I MIGHT GET EMERGENCY CALLS FROM! Does Google have a whitelist for "literally every hospital E.R in the continental United States also British Columbia"? And that's the MINIMUM I'd need to make that retarded plan workable.
There's a nice app called Hiya that does things like that.

We ve all been there. I can only think of blocking him for a few days make him aware why you did it and see if he changes? Some people tend to be cunty consistently so you're probably dealing with an unsolvable problem sadly :/
-
@stillwater Nah in retrospect I should have just deleted Hangouts from my phone. Then not told him until next time we had to meet up at lunch or something and I'd have to say "make sure you use SMS because I uninstalled Hangouts".
But hindsight is 20/20 and nobody's thinking rationally when they get woked up at 4 AM.

@blakeyrat said in The Official Status Thread:
The do not disturb whitelist is fucking useless. I'm not sure why anybody thought that was a good idea if the point of the feature is to still get emergency communications while blocking mundane things.
Android 9 has at least added the Do Not Disturb override that the iPhone has with which two calls in quick succession will ring through. What's shocking is that it apparently took them so long to implement that.
Edit: Oh, :
@Jaloopa said in The Official Status Thread:
There are other options in the do not disturb settings like letting calls through if it's the second one from the same number in 5 minutes. I wouldn't want to rely on a hospital immediately retrying if they couldn't get through to me though.

That still doesn't work if it's a call from a police officer or a hospital.
Like I said above, it's hard to imagine what this feature is for or why anybody would use it for anything other than just turning off the ringer on a schedule.

Sounds great for letting the scammers/spammers/robocallers wake me up. They're the only ones who call multiple times in short order, and always from spoofed numbers.

They better leave a message because I don't answer calls from numbers I don't have saved anyway.

That's only if you want them to ring on the first try. If you don't, then they have to call three times (i.e. Signify that the reason they're calling is actually urgent) then it goes through anyway. No list required.
FWIW my phone automatically turns on DND whenever I'm supposed to be asleep. Because getting build failed all-room-pings got annoying.

Even worse of a solution IMO because you're just passing the buck to a different App.

Are they from different numbers each time?
I don't know, the only scam calls I seem to get are silent robots that hang up after a few seconds. And at least they are courteous (now) to call at ten am when I'm supposed to be at work...

Status: Figuring out how to extend the LVM partition for the HipChat VM I'm fiddling with, because it comes with a 40GB filestore by default, which (unsurprisingly) is not big enough to store a 30GB (compressed) export file to restore.
This would normally happen automatically (I guess) if you were using AWS or VMWare (or had them attached as SCSI instead of VirtIO?), but because I'm it can't figure things out. Essentially, it expects things to be at/dev/xvd?
when in reality they're at/dev/vd?
.Tl;dr: You apparently do this (after making the disk physically bigger:
# lvextend -l +100%FREE /dev/file_store_vg/file_store # resize2fs -p /dev/mapper/file_store_vg-file_store
The other command that physically grows partitions (
pvresize
) apparently doesn't understand VirtIO-connected disks, but it doesn't seem to matter anyways.

Send him 18 messages in a row at 4 AM — after surreptitiously modifying his phone so that his notification for a message from you is an electric cattle prod in the nuts.

That may not have the effect you intend. Something very similar to that is done in order to collect bull semen for artificial insemination.

That's like being proud of oneself for only soiling one's pants in the bathroom: it could be worse, sure, but it could be so much better by just being like an ordinary person. Working all night is a definite indication of Something Other Than The Best World, at least in my book. (I'm very happy that my sister-in-law has finally got a job that doesn't come with that in the requirements.)
I hate being awake before 6am. Even when it is because of perfectly sensible reasons that I have no reason to complain about, it is still awful. Many commiserations.

Declaring you've slept in till 6:30 should be a crime. Probably punished by being tied to a bed with leather belts till noon.

That's a bit much for semen collection. You're supposed to excite the bull, not cook it from the rectum out.
Filed Under: There's no way this doesn't end up in QooC

Remove the current limiting. What I had in mind, of course, was more like 240V straight from the mains.
