Frankly I'm f'in astounded:
Apparently, having my modem's status page publicly available resulted in some search results. Who knew?
Also, apparently people search for "script poker" and "ywriter magyar".

Status: So, my hometown's administration grew a bit annoyed at the increasing levels of illegal parking. So, they hired a parking enforcement officer. Who will only hand out warnings for the next month after which there will be actual fines.
Needless to say, this did not please what we now call "enraged citizens".
"Don't you have more important things to do?" - "But what about...?" Y'know, the usual level of argument when you're confronted with your wrongdoing but don't want to admit to it.
I for myself never had any problems finding a legal parking spot. Maybe I had to park a bit further out but we're talking about 50 or a 100 meters tops I then had to walk ...
... wait ...
... I see the problem now.

Can't get JMeter up to 10 users without starting to get "connection reset by peer" errors. Hard to tell whom to blame. Ugh.
Edit: Seems to work better with Java HTTP implementation vs. HTTPClient4. As usual, reinventing the wheel makes things too complicated. (Already had to modify JMeter code where it assumed a client certificate keystore would be a file.)
Edit 2: Still about a 40% failure rate. This sucks. Might have to eat a Cat II finding and put JMeter on one of the Apache servers to find out if it's the load balancer in front fucking things up.

Way to go Microsoft. Break every fucking build script in existence that uses
vcvarsall.bat
. VS2017 will change the current directory to%USERPROFILE%\source
. Took me a while to figure out why my build was failing.Workaround 1: Delete that directory
Workaround 2: Putset "VSCMD_START_DIR=%CD%"
before the vcvarsall call in your script.Since I keep forgetting about #1, I finally updated my scripts.

Status: A discussion of contractors vs. employees in another thread reminded me: I signed the contract with my employer (call them XYZ Consulting) to go back to client A after my current assignment with client B ends in a month or so. I'm actually not sure the exact end date of this gig. Depending on when they show me the door, I may or may not get a few days of (unpaid) relaxation in between.

See, this is why I despise insurance. As far as I can tell, it's almost worse having it than not...
So, anyways, purposefully did my taxes today for the explicit purpose of having an updated number to give.
Stupid Healthcare.gov still insisted that paying on student loans (totaling $1.2k) necessarily results in some magic deductions (from the tax return info, it doesn't) and so I decided to slap it in the face and say "No, you wanted the AGI, here's the AGI as specified, fuck off!".
Well, as expected the system response was "Lol, no tax credit for you! Kthxbai"
So, looks like I'll be paying $450/mo for health insurance.
Goddamn.
Can someone convince me why this is a good thing?

I just updated a bunch of things including the kernel on my NUC. It took about two minutes and zero restarts. Meanwhile my gaming PC has been updating for the past half hour, restarted at least three times, creeped me out with a massive "Hi!" and reset my keyboard layout. Tell me again which is the more user-friendly system?
-
@deadfast The one that can be a gaming PC.
-
@pie_flavor Right now that's neither of them.

What's wrong with the Windows one?
-
@pie_flavor It's updating.
-
@hardwaregeek Ah. So it'll be that one in like five minutes. And as far as 'user-friendly', I'm just going to throw DPI scaling out there.

@tsaukpaetra Right, so it should be about five more minutes.

I wouldn't unless the advice was solicited. Has nothing to do with the problem at hand, sounds like.
In other news, moved JMeter from my home network to the client's network and the test plan is going perfectly. Go figure, it all boils down to my shitty network/Internet connection at home. Wonder if the security team is going to notice a whole shitload of connections coming out of one of the client's VDIs.
... yeah, they absolutely are going to notice that, come to think of it. Maybe I should figure out what's going on at home before that happens.

He probably noticed it, then Windows said, "Hold on, we need to do more updates!" and rebooted again.
Pure conjecture though, I avoid updates when possible.

I've never benefited from 96 percent of updates. The only thing I usually apply is antivirus definitions.
Edit: Besides, when this is all that happens when I try, I tend to get jaded:

Most updates contain security fixes. If you wait until you find one that's only security fixes, you could be the target of what the other security fixes prevent. And people like you are why it's not optional for home edition.
Edit: Besides, when this is all that happens when I try, I tend to get jaded:
I mean, we've already established that you use Windows very strangely.

I don't really understand what you're trying to say here. Pretty much the only updates I see are security fixes.

Sure, clicking the "install updates" button is a very strange behaviour, I'm sure. Most people just let it happen, but I intentionally ask for the
privilegepunishment of downloading updates on my terms and that somehow makes me strange.
-
@tsaukpaetra No. I mean, for instance, constantly reinstalling it.

I keep trying to import data in Excel 2016 and it keeps crashing every time.
I tried .csv. I tried a different .csv. I tried importing the .csv in Access, saving as an access database, then importing it from that database. I tried "repairing" the install and doing the same. Always crash.
Thankfully exporting to xlsx from Access worked.

As long as that really means "I can't (won't) fix it, you need to buy a new machine".
-
@pie_flavor said in The Official Status Thread:

Only if it's on really nice hardware with an SSD. Otherwise, it's at least another hour.

Java, you fucking fuck.
Given the name of the code in question, I'd say that crash is actually in C++ code (the destructor for the
StubRoutines::sha512_implCompressMB
class) and that probably means that something in the SHA-512 implementation was pushed into a strange state somehow…

That's what that message always means. Otherwise it'd be a Java exception and not a JVM crash.
