Okay, let me rephrase then. I have no idea what that means.

Status: Rescued 6 weeks of a PhD student's work that he'd managed to shred thoroughly by:
- Committing an 90GB CSV file to his git repository as part of trying to checkpoint his work. (It was the output from one of his experimental runs.)
- Trying and failing to push that repository to github (which told him the equivalent of “WTF dude!? Too large.”)
— At this point, he panicked and took advice. We told him “to fix this without losing all your other work, you need to commit a delete of the problem file as your next commit and squash those two commits together to make something that you can push up to github”. (That trims it out of the git artefact history, which is what the problem was.)
- He made a commit that was supposed to remove the problem file (I don't know if he succeeded with this at this point) but when he asked his IDE (PyCharm) to do the squashing, he got confused and ended up with a dialog that said something along the lines of “oh, you're already ahead of that other branch; do you want to do a reset to that point?” and then like an idiot he said “yes”. It's so easily done with an IDE, and PyCharm's git integration is really quite confusing.
— Aside: I hate the PyCharm (and other JetBrains) git integration. I've had many people tell me that it is so easy, but as soon as it goes wrong, recovery of things to a defined good state is extremely difficult. Eclipse does a significantly better job, and gets the level of warning about what is going on more right more of the time. It also sticks more closely to standard git terminology, which helps a lot when you're an ordinary user Googling for help. ;)
- For reasons best known to itself (but probably relating to having that huge 90GB file in there) PyCharm did an immediately garbage collect on the git repository. Boom! Work lost! Disaster struck!
— This is the point where I came in properly.
-
So I first tried to figure out what was going on, and deduced the facts related up above. Lots of checking done, and it really looks like the work is gone from the repository. (If the idiot committed more often, this would be less of a disaster; redoing an hour's work isn't too big a deal, whereas redoing 6 weeks is more of a problem. But can't go back in time and fix that now.) While yes, I know how to resuscitate things without a branch provided the actual commit IDs are known and present, if things are purged then there's not much that is possible. User is looking well ed at this point.
-
However, it turns out that the user was also keeping copies using our old friends, the make-a-copy-with-another-name archiving scheme! Now, some of these were of no use at all because they were just a random selection of files from within the repository, but in the directory
REPO-old-new-current
there was a directory that included a copy of the.git
, and it was from only a few hours before. We were lucky! -
With that moved back to a name we liked, I went in and and cleaned all the problem bits and pieces out using the git command line (much easier when dealing with things that are well and truly ), set up a proper
.gitignore
, squashed the commits, and lo and behold, got it all to push to github. Also, his machine started to function much more rapidly as it stopped trying to keep on processing all those vast files in git, and so ceased to stop paging lots of things to disk.
So the work was by and large saved (a couple of hours lost in the end, one way and another, but that's no big deal really; a good lesson for a student to learn IMO) and my reputation as someone who saves the unsaveable is enhanced.

Why not just add a DOS emulator to your game, install an actual BBS on it.
Then, since you have the DOS emulator in the game, add a modem to the in-game computer, and a copy of Telix to dial the BBS.
The whole thing is probably measured in the megabytes, and would take less time and effort than making your own.
-
Status: Parsing an annoying byte-stream.
It's DEC-ASCII. i.e. some bytes are UTF-8 and some are just the decimal value. Fine, I have a schema, so just mildly annoying.
It arrives in blocks and some of these blocks have a [13] at the end of them (\r, carriage return). 13 is a valid value in the data so I'm going to have to modify my transport layer to not emit a smooth byte array but give some indication of where the blocks were so I can figure out if a 13 I come across is real or not. Grrrrrr.
Edit: Oh good, it's also a different number of bytes than the schema says it should be, with or without the \r's

Add VR macros that input the correct DOS commands for the player.

Got the call this morning while I was getting my breakfast: "There's a major problem at <organization>; I need you to head over there now."
Finish breakfast, pop on emergency tie, head over there.
: "Oh yeah, we fixed that problem before you got here. We locked the system and it turns out the service account didn't have the override to access a locked system."
: "... well, I'll just sit over here for a little bit organizing my e-mail, yeah? Holler at me if something else breaks, I suppose."

Yeah, browsing on mobile it just seems like the office Internet is more shitball soup than usual. My replies don't show up until I refresh, navigation hangs until I refresh but then loads instantly when I Refresh... actually now that I mention that symptom, sounds like JavaScript issues with the browser. Ugh.

@coldandtired Windows seems good when you're dealing with Linux.
Then when you have to deal with Windows, you realize it's a giant mess 10 times bigger than Linux, it's just better at hiding the messiness under a nice interface. That's when you suddenly understand the "keep it simple" Linux philosophy.

Nope, none of my local supermarkets sell Bratwurst. Even M&S. So it's southern fried chicken instead.

That's not a thing. And you have to make sure you clarify what you mean by 'windows' in this case: ancient COM interfaces they can't change for compatibility reasons? UWP?
-
@anonymous234 said in The Official Status Thread:
the "keep it simple" Linux philosophy.
If I went to a restaurant which prided itself on keeping it simple, I would expect food without dozens of fancy ingredients but still tasty and professionally cooked.
I wouldn't expect the waiter to bring me a lump of metal, a grindstone, and a cow on a lead.
-
@magus I'm going to quote myself from another thread
Joining the insider program, I noticed that any time they try to make a change anywhere in Windows, it seems to break... pretty much everything.
I mean, it's a beta program and all, but you'd think they'd be able to make UI changes without breaking the boot process or the network drivers somehow. It's like they just have a big code mess, and it only holds together by the sheer amount of users reporting all the parts that keep breaking off and the thousands of programmers continuously gluing them back on.
And in the case of the Windows Store, even that can't manage to make it work reliably.I can't keep track of how many times the Windows Store, or Windows Update, has errored on me for no apparent reason, and they're the most important parts of the system.
-
@anonymous234 "I JOINED A BETA AND THINGS BROKE SO THE WHOLE THING IS OVERCOMPLEX AND BAD!"
No matter how much you say you understand and aren't really saying that, you are saying precisely that.

I have no sympathy for them.
I got crap from my user that instigated our lovely cryptovirus infestation on Monday. Everyone gets told that the server or My Documents is the only place to store things.
He was unhappy that his laptop had been nuked from orbit and restored losing his desktop.
I'd love to have roaming profiles but we don't have the storage.Edit: I'd have more sympathy if he hadn't opened an email that was in Chinglish and said it was an Invoice when he wasn't in Accounts. And then opened a 7zip'd xlsm file and then clicked 'enable macros'... Seriously...

@benjamin-hall As it turns out, I think the universe has a grudge. Not only has the storm shifted west (toward me), but something went wrong with my car and now there's a massive parasitic battery drain that kills the battery (relatively new, only about 2.5 years old) within 10 minutes of the car being off. And my car insurance doesn't cover storm damage (because I was cheap when I bought it, and now it's too late to change anything). Sigh.
