STATUS: Cleaned my table at the computer club, putting all my hardware in drawers instead of keeping it in a big pile. Also was given a "new" computer. Meaning I was told there was a computer down in the server room I could go get and add to my collection. So now I have a Pentium 4 with RDRAM memory and an AGP Pro slot! Just need to wipe it and reinstall it as the login has become lost, but the sticker with the license key is still on the case if I want the authentic Windows 2000 Professional experience. I may even have memory upgrades for it, if any of my RDRAM modules happen to be larger than the ones in the computer.
You can reset that login without wiping it. There's some bootable Linux thing.

Status: Trying to figure out why my Xamarin.Forms app opens and immediately closes after I deploy it to my Google Pixel using Visual Studio in order to attach a debugger.
The emulators don't have this problem. And the app is actually deployed to my Pixel. If I start it manually it works just fine so it very likely isn't a problem with the app itself.

@tsaukpaetra Nothing as radical as that. Just went through and was even stricter about removing stuff from class names that was duplicating the package structure. If the entire package is doing nothing but UDP message handling, the class names don't all need to be prefixed with

Status: Was wondering why my Surface Book suddenly demanded to know which camera I wanted to use (front or back?) upon startup of the Android emulator. Said emulator then additionally failed to start because it couldn't use hardware GPU emulation. And then something else threw up an error.
So I rebooted.
Only to find the Book to be caught in an endless reboot cycle due to a "Critical Process Died" BSOD.
Currently resetting it to see if that helps or if there's some underlying hardware problem because I actually didn't change anything over the last two weeks.

Status: Sat down to do some video editing for my upcoming web series this morning and immediately discovered a problem:
I was 100% stone dead out of disk space.Frak.
So I did some quick thinking, and remembered that there's a guy in my social circle who is a massive movie and TV pirate, to the point that he actually has an enterprise-class storage server in his basement and hands out accounts for "<censored>Flix" to friends.
And then I remembered that the last time I was at his house, he had a literal PILE of SATA hard drives on his kitchen table from a recent server migration. Old models, small capacity, so I hadn't thought anything of it at the time, but hey, I'll take what I can get right now. So I sent the dude a text asking if I could buy one.
The answer was "Yeah, but I'm out of town. You know the garage door code."
So now I'm sitting here initializing a pair of 750GB drives with 2012 manufacturing dates for RAID1.

Status: Ok, trying to do the "Make a AppX from a Win32 executable" thing (again).
Following these instructions:
Oh for... You had me install an App and download 3.3 GB of data just to say "Oh, by the way, you don't need to do this!"
What the FUCK!
See, this is why I gave up last time. I have a very small application, can be summarized in about five files including DLLs. I just want it to be in an AppX bundle so I can shove it in my HoloLens' face. But no, all I can ever find is runarounds and "All you need to do is X thing" when I can't find or download X.
WHY IS THIS SO DAMN DIFFICULT!

Five minutes of omphaloskepsis indicates it might be because the Appx was built on Windows 10 Version 15063, while my HoloLens is on 14393.
Now checking Windows Update to see if I can shove HoloLens at least that far...

@tsaukpaetra said in The Official Status Thread:
checking Windows Update
OMFG Why!?!? It's like, a built-in app, what reason can you give for it not being found "yet"?!?!?!?!
-
@tsaukpaetra Because manually managing updates is and you should let Windows sort that automatically. That way you can be sure to have them happen either immediatley or
Random.nextInt()
weeks after general availability, with the added bonus of that it may or may not interrupt your workflow when it happens!

@tsaukpaetra said in The Official Status Thread:

Status: Nope, no Creators Update for HoloLens, despite all the hype.
And no, packaging it under a lower version of Windows did not help whatsoever.
Fuck this shit.

@tsaukpaetra That's super weird. Have they said anywhere why they don't have a new build?
But yeah, I don't think Centennial works until after the Creators update, so that would explain why you're having this problem.

: You know what? Lithium ion batteries are fucking awesome. super light and fantastic capacity....
: We've also more or less solved the super deep discharge problem killing the batteries through smarter chargers that can recover pretty much all the capacity when that happens....
: Why don't we have AA cell Lithium ion batteries then? wouldn't that be awesome?

i'm sure we could successfully miniaturize the protection circuitry to the point where we could fit it all in a AA battery and still increase the energy denisty of the things. we're smart peoples, and if we can make LiPo powered dildos i'm sure we can figure out how to make my gamboy run on LiPos too.
-
@accalia said in The Official Status Thread:

They did that by making the new versions run on lithium batteries instead of AAs.
It would probably be simpler to make USB adapters for devices like that, but even then it's a pretty niche market.

that was what i was trying to avoid by making the batteries generick. there's thousands of devices that take AA batteries.
of coruse even i f we could solve that there's the voltage problem so it's already a crib death from like eleven different directions.

@accalia said in The Official Status Thread:

If the charging/discharging circuitry is built into the AA cell form factor (as it'd most certainly need to be), there's no reason why it couldn't provide the output at 1.3-1.4 volts like a typical NiHM rechargeable battery. (Except cost, I suppose.)
In fact, they could even have it scale the output to approximately match a NiHM battery's discharge voltage so that devices could estimate the remaining battery life correctly... if they wanted to. (Again, cost.)
-
@accalia As a fox, I would expect you to be rather leery of lion batteries.
