You should see what hoops you have to jump through to do multiple measurements so you can compare results.
For example, if you did a mis-measurement you better find out immediately after the fact because you can only delete the last measurement in the list. Which means that if you did 5 measurements and #3 turned out to be wrong, you have to delete #5 and then #4 as well.

I'm going to write good software.
How old are you? Self employed?
-
@wharrgarbl No, not self employed. Writing software well is certainly not something I consider easy, but it's still something worth aiming for. I'm fully aware of how bad the state of things is now, but to accept that that is the way it should be and help it grow worse is completely abhorrent to me.
You think because you're okay with how bad things are, you are wise in the ways of the world, and that everyone just has to brace themselves and sink down in the sludge like you have. Maybe I will fail, and maybe I will end up that way.
But for now at least I reject that attitude with all that I am.

@Magus said in The Official Status Thread:

No, I'm not OK with that, but at the current job things doesn't even make sense anymore.

@wharrgarbl Then you have to either put work in to fix it, explain to people why it's wrong, or find some sane place. Projects turn out like that when we don't say no, or when we don't talk with our feet.
If there was no hope at all, I certainly wouldn't be working where I am now: they've managed something truly awful and unmaintainable in what must be record time. They're really excited about the fact that they're about to start selling it.
I still think maybe I should give up on this place sometimes...

As much as I like the results of my walking exercise project and the schedule of work -> exercise -> shower -> eat -> faff about on computer -> sleep has made it easier for me to adhere to, I still find myself having an internal debate something like...
(inner self): But I don't waaaaaaaaanna go outside and go walking!
(responsible inner self): You need to do your exercise before you can play computer for the night...

You can't fix dishonest managers, and sane places don't employ mad people like me.
-
@wharrgarbl Sounds like you ought to be self-employed :D

Status: Just looked at our ticket system. I wrote a ticket that the PC in my Physics lab was not booting, displaying some bootloader error.
Their reply: Couldn't reproduce, booted normally for us.
I'd really like to know what magic they did because for me it still looks like this:
-
@Rhywden They put an Ubuntu Live CD in and called it a day?

My bet? They hit Escape at the initial Option ROM loader while it was looking for a connection.

What works in IE11 doesn't apparently work in whatever IE they're using in the software (which is purportedly IE11, but obviously ISN'T because the damn CSS animations aren't working!).
Oh well.

I'd assume that they plain didn't test from the room where there was a problem, and instead checked using another machine in another place. You know, not magic but the other thing.

STATUS I'm growing tired of finding the perfect todo list. Everyone that I find comes close but is just off enough that I feel I need to find a new one. I sense that I'll end up writing one in the near future and end up releasing it to the public. It would be a novel way to tick the "Spring Experience Necessary" checkbox on my job applications though.

Try throwing a strop when anyone asks for IE support. It worked fairly well for me. I also lie about Microsoft not supporting and patching it anymore.

STATUS: Being very confused about my coworker's video rendering computer at home. He describes it as "running RAID-3 because it's fastest" and "Wikipedia says it's best for video rendering". Also using a ZFS software raid. And it sounds like he's doing it on a partition level, as he says he has a Windows partition on one of the drives in his array, for dual-booting purposes. He also claims that "(RAID-3 and) RAID-5 is faster than RAID-0" showing a manufacturer's data sheets for their external Thunderbolt enclosures to back up his claims.

Status: Wondering just how many people know the gestures described here
In Windows 8, you can close an app by moving the mouse to the top of the screen until the title bar appears, and then click the X button. But how do you do it if you are on a touch-only device?
The way to close an app using only touch is to drag from the top of the screen to the bottom. If the app is not currently on screen, you can pull in the switcher from the left edge, and then drag the app from the switcher to the bottom of the screen.
There are some variations on this gesture, depending on how you want to close the app.
If you simply drag the app to the bottom of the screen, then the app is closed, which means that the window disappears from the screen, and the app is suspended. The app is not removed from memory immediately, however. Only if there is a need for the memory will the memory for the closed app be reclaimed. The system hangs onto the memory in case you relaunch the app, in which case it doesn't need to fire up the entire app from scratch; it can just resume the suspended version of the app.
If you want to close the app and terminate it, then drag it to the bottom of the screen, and then hold it there. After a few seconds, the picture will flip from a thumbnail of the app to its splash screen. Now let go. This closes the window and terminates it.
A variation on the above gesture is to drag the window to the bottom of the screen, hold it there until it flips to the splash screen, and then move it up to the top half of the screen, and then let go. This is the combo close-terminate-restart gesture: It closes the app, terminates it, and then immediately relaunches it.
These gestures also work with the mouse. You can grab the window from the switcher, or you can move the mouse to the top of the screen and grab its title bar. The rest of the gesture remains the same.
Windows 10 in tablet mode retains the core drag-to-bottom-of-screen gesture, but it dispensed with the variations. Dragging an app to the bottom of the screen closes and terminates it.

Why can't it just recognise me giving the app the finger in frustration? That'd be the ideal sort of gesture handlingβ¦

A managers most important job is to run around the room, moving the furniture out of the way, so people can concentrate on their work.
-
@accalia
Pretty sure you have that upside down. The manager exists to tell the subordinates what color of blue to paint the bikeshed. And to change his mind 4 times while the painting is in progress.
