status: Sat down and talked with my six-year-old about our dog, that he is old, and that we may not be able to keep him that much longer. Overall, it went better than I had feared. I only cried a little.
Now she is playing doctor and bandaging his paw while singing for him.
... Who is going to have that talk with me when it is actually time?

I'm happy to lend a shoulder to cry on. Just be careful not to accidentally impale yourself on my quills ;)
Also, I'm not sure 6yo can actually grasp the concept of mortality. Then again, I'm no developmental psychologist.

Status: I have a link I want to post… but I fear it'll end up starting something that will have to be relegated to the garage.
I think I'll keep it to myself.

It's alright, he's just going to go live on a farm.
What do farmers tell their children?

@CreatedToDislikeThis It's OK, it's just a phase, you'll be back whining about it on the IRC in no time!

Our little madlet is 17 now. She's getting quite deaf, her eyes are a bit milky, and she needs meloxicam daily to control pain in her joints; but take her out for a walk and she'll still hare across the school oval like a pup. Just doesn't quite have the stamina any more.
I'm having trouble getting my head around this picture being ten years old:

You might be thinking of the DS, which IIRC was WEP only, and required a dedicated Nintendo Access Point connected to a PC
No, it worked on standard WEP networks, the Nintendo Access Point was optional. I wonder if any of its online features still work today.
Nintendo has never been very good at interacting with technology that's not their own. They basically lived in their own world, until ubiquitous internet and smartphones forced them to adapt.

They can. Our cat just got run over (1 1/2 hours ago), talk about quick lessons.

@RaceProUK San Andreas?
edit: catching up. Well, SA is longer than Cascadia according to wikipedia (1300km vs 1000km)

Quick... if you take the dog to be put down now, you'll get a twofer one! You'll only have to go through it once.

@anonymous234 Nice oneboxing there…
Everyone loves to use a DN like that in public-visible contexts.

Status: Did you know that the Sound Recorder in Windows 10 (and I assume 7 and up) can't generate .wav files anymore?
Neither did I!
So I dug up a Windows XP setup ISO,
extract
ed sndrec32.exe, and now I have a nice, (tiny!) simple wave recorder I don't need to download plugins for or do anything at all in a meager 128 KB.Too bad about that Registry though...

huh..... i thought that was too easy.....
/me finished one level and it zoomed out to another level.... this will be tricky......
And when you finish that level it zooms out again...I know it because it's basically all I've been doing on my free time this week.
I've gotten this far on the 2nd level zoomed out...

Man, a wonky build test on Ubuntu on Windows managed to freeze so bad I had to reboot the system (kill -9 didn't work and you can't use taskkill etc. from outside the Linux subsystem) and also killed a process on another machine backing up to said system so bad I likewise had to shut it down (couldn't kill -9 the backup process either).

Status: This statement is false?

@heterodox And looks like it's going to do the same thing again. I hate to create Debian packages by skipping tests, but I might have to this time.
FAIL: nm --size-sort Running binutils/testsuite/binutils-all/objcopy.exp ... Version binutils/objcopy 2.24 Running binutils/testsuite/binutils-all/objdump.exp ...
Well, I'll see if it's still there in the morning (I let it run for about an hour last time) and whether the failed nm test fails the packaging (probably should, even though it looks like Bug 15869 which was logged in 2013 and never has been touched since). Fucking open source bullshit.

You can admit it, the process was really on Windoze, nobody here will make too much fun of you for that. But you seriously expect us to believe something on The Holy Operating System hard-crashed the computer? 1/10, too unbelievable.

@izzion, it would probably also work correctly and not crash if he ran Ubuntu in an actual VM and not whatever half-assed nonsense Ubuntu on Windows is.

It's quarter-assed! :D

Nope. Crashed on Ubuntu VM as well. Fuck this shit.
-
@heterodox Did it crash the VM, too? The whole "couldn't kill it" sounds like an I/O operation that got stuck or something, at least that's pretty much the only thing I can remember that happened to me where I couldn't even kill it...

I mean, it didn't crash Windows, technically; I just couldn't end the process. Definitely an I/O operation or something else in kernel context, yeah. In the VM, I didn't really pay attention to whether it crashed the thing; just had the same test failure and hang, so I threw up my hands for the time being and have another plan of approach.
