Today my laptop arrived. I'm in no great rush to get the keyboard/mouse; my current ones work fine as well.

You need a better truck. I have never used a block heater in my entire life, and I live in Canada.

Is your truck a cranky old diesel with an unknown number of working glow plugs, in a city that has gas stations which inexplicably sell summer-blend fuel in January?
It seems better since getting my injectors replaced. I also go pretty heavy on cetane-booster additive. But if it's plugged in overnight I don't have to worry about anything when it's -10° in the morning.

This piece of crap open source OS is fuckin garbage, and your time must be worthless if you waste it trying to make it work. They can't handle even DHCP properly. It's not like TCP/IP was invented yesterday.
What-the-actual-fuck !!!

Maybe it's a Canadian company, so they think -10℉ is still summer
But if it's plugged in overnight I don't have to worry about anything when it's -10° in the morning.
I don't have a diesel, but if my car doesn't start at even -30℉, it's got a problem.
Also, having it plugged all night is, I think, a waste of electricity. You would most probably have the same result if you plug it 1 or 2 hours before you leave.

That means getting up 1-2 hours before you leave though.
Or getting a timer switch

@TimeBandit Gasoline is far easier to ignite than diesel fuel. Diesels are compression-ignition, and when it's < -10° any heat from compression tends to get completely soaked away by 900 pounds of cold metal before the fuel gets a chance to ignite.
As for the block heater, it has a thermostat and seems to keep the engine at around 30° F. Not really warm, but warm enough that it starts reliably. I also learned from experience that when it's really freaking cold out, it takes about 4 hours to warm the engine up enough to start. I'm not waking up at 3 AM to go plug it in.
As I understand it, the block heaters on gas engines tend to switch around -25°, so plugging them in is a no-op unless it's actually that cold.

I know how Diesels/Gasoline engines work, thank you.
You should probably replace all those failed glow plugs. If you remove them, they are easy to test. Just supply them with 12V directly from the battery and see them glow. If not, replace it.

There is "water in the fuel filter will freeze" Canada.
You see, the fuel filter won't let the water pass, so it accumulate in the filter, and that's what freeze and block the passage.Change your fuel filter every couple years.
Gasoline will only freeze around -40 ~ -50 ℃ depending on its constituents.
I've never used gas lines anti-freeze and never got frozen gas lines.

The problem is I only think about that when I'm having trouble in winter, and I hate doing automotive work when it's a bajillion degrees below zero. Cold tools, cold parts, no dexterity in gloves...I should look into it over summer, but I completely forget about it then.
I've been going without heat for a couple weeks now because I didn't have my grille cover on yet, and it's a pain to do especially with cold hands. I can't possibly have one of the easy snap-on vinyl covers, no, I gotta unbolt the whole grille and put a new one on. Fortunately it warmed up to about 30 yesterday and I finally manned up to get it done.

Depending on how it was installed, most builds of Windows 10 won't install AU until they've been in service for at least 30 days. So it's probable that you're both "right".

@accalia There's an installer for it if you can find it.
Why the hell is the text in the editor giant now?
-
@accalia Hm, tried it a couple more times, it's not finding anything. And if I tick 'check online' I get an error, so I'm pretty sure it's only checking WSUS and not piercing the proxy.
Corporate OS image installer did mention mandatory OS upgrades twice a year so I was surprised to then get stuck pre-anniversary.

Quite. I'm running linux on the old one, but that's not really tenable anymore with corporate guidelines. I'm not quite sure whether or not this thing is a domain member. A colleague mentioned you can locally disable password change policy but mine isn't enabled in the first place and I'm unsure whether secpol.msc shows domain policies as well or just local ones that will get overridden.
-
@PleegWat
Given that AU was only released to WSUS in November, corporate probably didn't approve the update yet.

A bunch of
communistteenagers in mom's basement designed and built the amazing dpkg, but Micro-Soft with its large team of software engineers can only come with an half-baked solution that miserably fail too often, as part of it's main product.Obviously, proprietary software is superior on every front !

@TimeBandit MS does have a better package manager called Chocolatey, which is 55% baked instead of merely 50%. They don't ship it with Windows though.

Doesn't look to be made by MS. They are using it, because obviously it's better than what MS came up with.

Status: The Land of VMs is scary.
We're trying to do a thing that involves installing a thing on an azure VM inside docker, but we have limited access to configuring the VMs we were allocated. I managed to get docker running, and even downloaded a windows package for it, but despite being able to spin up VMs in Hyper-V, Docker assures me that the system contains no hypervisor.

@TimeBandit said in The Official Status Thread:

Diesels are a bit different. As they are compression ignition engines, they have issues with extremely low temperatures. The mass of the block can cool the ignition charge as it is being heated, keeping it from firing off. This is the purpose of glow plugs and other air intake heaters. They pre-warm the intake air, so that it will more reliably light off.
@TimeBandit said in The Official Status Thread:

Maybe, but then you would have to get up, get dressed, and go out in the snow 1-2 hours before you need to leave for work. Most would rather sleep in. Also, it is easier to just keep the engine warmed. Otherwise, you are trying to warm ~850lbs of cast iron that is exposed to the elements with a < 1800w heater.
Back in my construction days, we would try to bid work for the winter. If you were going to do work in the winter, it had to be some place terribly cold in order to be able to move haul trucks without getting stuck. One winter we landed a job in Northern Michigan where it was so cold that we literally could not start the machines to get them off of the lowboy. Ether did not help, we built tents around the engine compartments and heated them. Nothing would work. There also was not a place for us to rent or borrow that would fit a loaded lowboy at 14' tall, 11' wide and 100' long so that we could warm everything up. We ended up bringing the first shipment of machines back south, getting them started and then hauling them running back to Northern Michigan.
Those machines ran all winter, only getting shut down to check fluids or do oil changes.
