Oh yeah, now I remember!

Status: So the engineer who designed my son's RC car decided to design a way for it to alert you that you have left the switch in the on position. They decided to implement it by making the RC car go forward full speed for a fraction of a second and then reverse back to where it was.
For any engineer considering implementing such a feature...I would much rather deal with some dead batteries than to have to hunt down that goddamn car at 11:30PM and try and find what table or couch or whatever it is under when it only spazzes out every few minutes.
That decision is as dumb as the one that Hunter made on the ceiling fan that is installed in our bedroom. The fan that is designed in such a way that every time you turn it on, the lights come on, regardless of the state it was in when you turned it off. I am sure their thinking is that if you do not switch the fan and light separately (we don't), then the light comes on so you can see in the room. They forgot about power failures though. So when we have an overnight storm and the power goes out at 3AM, when it comes back on the overhead light comes on and rudely awakens you.
A hell of a lot of engineers need beaten with a Stillson wrench.

Status: Ok, this is annoying now. WTF is happening every 18 hours or so?
Anyone have any ideas? This is essentially an idle EC2 t2.micro instance that literally does NOTHING, yet it randomly decides to spin up for five minutes at almost regular intervals and... what? It's not I/O on the disk (or apparently that monitor isn't working, it shows zero across the board)...
I just don't know...

Try a cumulative disk ops metric if you've got one? (Probably won't show anything though.) Just to be sure that you're not hitting sampling problems.
Also look at metrics for network I/O. Not everything is disk-based.

I don't expect it to show anything, it's a web server nobody hits. All the three static files are likely cached in memory by now. ;)

It's also a VPN endpoint for the RDP Gateway thing, which accounts for the network traffic:
Most of that I assume is just "Hey, are you still there? Yup. Cool, I'm here too" junk.
Like, there's no spike in Network, so it's doubtful it's an internet attack.
It honestly feels like some kind of random maintenance thing that I can't find...

Sounds like you could try running
top
in batch mode once a minute, dumping to a log file, and see if you catch what's going on. Which will greatly increase the load on the system, of course. From a hair's-width from zero to only nearly zero. ;)

Maybe. Perhaps I'll troll through the Event Logs first though...

I bet someone's written something like that. No idea what it's called though.

Powershell?
while (1) { ps | sort -desc cpu | select -first 30; sleep -seconds 2; cls }

Called it. For some reason Software Protection Platform is being run.
I'm pretty sure I don't have Office installed or whatever uses it, so...

That's the interactive version; I was just thinking about the stuff for batch mode. So no loop and pitch the output into a file. Not that you need it if you've found the cause already.
(BTW, why isn't the logging traffic hitting the disk? Logging to memory is
)
-
@dkf said in The Official Status Thread:

It is, but it's very low output:
Mostly the server talking to itself looks like...
I honestly believe that the disk IO monitor is broken.

Yeah. I don't really care, like I said, idle server, but it would be nice if things I didn't set up worked as advertised...
Status: Adding said idle server to be another Domain Controller. Lets see if I can fuck this up too...

Well, DNS failed to get set up (Because why wouldn't it), so now I'm off to hand-write dnsmasq entries. Woohoo!

DNS Entries crafted, now for the whole reason I'm adding another controller: Lets get FreeNAS to connect to the domain!
That surprisingly worked well enough on its own, now lets screw all the folder permissions by recursively chown-ing them to some random user in the domain (because Everyone isn't in the list for some reason, it's a Group, not a user).

This is probably going to take forever, isn't it?

Status: In TFS, when it's time to check in, it normally looks like this:
- Right click the directory your solution is in in source control explorer, and get latest.
- If you have conflicts, resolve them.
- Check in.
In Git, when it's time to check in, it normally looks like this:
- Commit your changes locally.
- Change branches to local master.
- Sync remote master to local master.
- Change branches to your branch.
- Attempt to sync from local master to your branch.
- There were conflicts, so it won't happen at all, and you have to do it on command line so that VS will finally let you merge.
- Resolve your conflicts.
- Check in.
I hate git.
And in every workplace I've been that use SVN it's been: merge all things manually using a diff program, because with don't trust SVN merging functionality. (and lose some work while doing that).
With git, I think you're doing it wrong, you could just "git commit && git push", solve some conflicts if they happen and git push again.

Tool 'Forty Six and 2' (Drum Cover) – 06:06
— Brooke COur one year old was entranced. Either he digs blonde rocker chicks, or he digs Tool, or maybe both. Either way, that's my boy. :)
Also, she is pretty amazing on drums. Nifty.
-
@Polygeekery I'd let her play my drums.
Interpret that however way you wish, it'll still be correct

Status: chat used to work right on mobile edge. It used to be sized correctly pretty much all the time. Now there's always some element offscreen.
If it had always been this way, whatever, no one uses this browser... But it used to work!

@Magus do a hard refresh.

@Polygeekery my phone seems to do that randomly pretty much daily. I don't know what you expect.
I have to turn my phone landscape to close the chat window...

It could have been old cinnamon (and/or low quality quasi-cinnamon). The "challenge" part comes from compounds that are present in freshly ground, but deteriorate over time.

Just back with the kids from the cinema. We saw Trolls, wherein @accalia coerces @blakeyrat to help her rescue a couple of trolls from the evil
JCheff. Completely unrealistic: it ended happily, Blakey started singing, no-one started a lounge thread, and no-one ragequit.

Hi!! My name is Brooke i'm 13 years old and I love to play drums!! Thank You so much for checking out my channel! Please subscribe to see more new drum covers!! You can also follow me on instagram @rockangel_ for more vids:):)
Oh man, just wait until
hears about this. :P

@Polygeekery
Wait, so she's an FBI agent?
-
@izzion If so, a few guys on these forums want to go deep cover
with her.
-
@Polygeekery
I was just intrigued by her drumming. Tool has no easy drum parts ... The man is a human metronome.That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

@Polygeekery She looks about 20 to me.

I would have guessed somewhere in the 16-18 range from the video I posted. Honestly, I did not realize she was that young until I clicked through to another video.

@mott555 we are all just gearing up for a very stern, long-winded, very condescending, talking to.

@mott555 also, she is pretty amazing on drums. The fact that she is so talented at her age is even more amazing.

Some people just grow up early, and misconceptions will always happen. When I was 15, people thought I was 25. Those who didn't know me wondered why an old guy was still in high school. I'd be eating dinner with family in a restaurant and have waiters offer me alcohol without even carding first, not realizing how young I actually was.
EDIT:
is supposed to be a shrug but I don't see it.
