@cartman82 nah, a different one.
Problem is, I have no idea how to cheaply use it. Dig out a Raspberry Pi? Buy a droplet? Start using that Azure credit?
I kind of want a personal e-mail server, but almost every guide on how to do it starts with "don't do it".

What I found most useful is getting a static IP from my ISP and pointing my domain(s) at that. Then whenever I'm working on a personal project, I give it a nice subdomain. You have no idea how useful it is to be able to show your WIP to a colleague, open it on a mobile phone, set up an OAuth redirect, put up a quick file download...

Don't do it. Pay someone to host your email.

You can use no-ip and put a cname entry in your domain aliasing it to it.
Or you can host things for free in heroku or openshift.

50 mailboxes, hm. Close to what I want, which is basically to have all mail to the domain go to my mailbox - so that I can sign up to each website with a distinct e-mail address, and when one of them starts sending spam just redirect the whole address to /dev/null. Kinda like GMail's +tags, except working on websites which don't accept them and unable to be stripped by savvy spammers.

Heroku and OpenShift are nice, though...

None of the above.
Jesus wept, I know of significant flaws in four of the options, don't know the guts of Go well enough to comment, and the other one is Java (which is just so fucking bureaucratic; you can't do anything in it without writing an astonishing amount of boilerplate…)

Status: finally decided to change my phone's ring tone from the default for the first time in my life. I went with this.
I always wanted to find a really high-quality clip of this sound effect and use it.
That guy's isn't terrible, but the "thump" of the sonar is all wrong. Then again, that might be the best you can do on an Android device's speakers.
Apparently Colonial Marines did a pretty hood job of replicating it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3p8OpFJYRU
But I'm too lazy to buy the game and rip the sound files.

@Onyx I've never had Bluetooth anything work consistently or reliably. Bluetooth is the worst technology in common use.
My phone and my car manage to get into a dialog maybe 70% of the time, max.
-
@Onyx Some bluetooth headsets have both a headphone half and a microphone half, and to use both at the same time it switches to a different kind of bluetooth profile for some reason which generally causes issues and lower quality. What I do is just disable the microphone half in the sound dialog and make it so it can only ever use the headphones half. I've never had any issues after figuring that out.
-
So I might be a bit behind on this, but this trip has involved many tunnels and no cell dropouts in them. Have noticed the reason why is that cell towers have been strategically positioned with antennas pointed straight down the tunnel bores at ground level. Very interesting.

@blakeyrat said in The Official Status Thread:

Android is pretty much spot on, works great. Linux is... well, depends on the device, really. The only problem I have with my current headset is that it's bad at recovering from low-signal situations, it tends to de-sync, Windows does much better there, audio skips but it comes back in sync once the connection gets good again. However, it's terrible at reconnecting to devices, there is no "connect" button. Since the headset will try to reconnect to last device it was connected to before it's fine if I had it connected to Windows last, but if not I have to pair it again.
And I'm saying "Windows" because it's not just device-related. This machine is dual-boot and I assume there's some kind of token generated on pairing, meaning that I have to re-pair my headset every time I switch OSs, MAC is the same but the token doesn't match. Which is, ugh, I get why, and it's an edge case, but it's annoying.

Yes, I'm using A2DP (the stereo profile), that's what the lower thing in the screenshot is. The microphone I plugged out was a wired one (that I use because stereo+mic over BT is a no-go on the quality front), not related to the Bluetooth whatsoever.

Don't tell me you don't have a bunch of crappy old components collecting dust somewhere, you can't cram into a mini-atx and stuff it under a desk.
If not, Raspberry Pi 3 is like 70-80 euross, fully decked out.
But yeah, don't host sites on your cable internet. Just have a (sub)domain pointed for convenience's sake.

If you're like any other person here, you have at least half a dozen old computers and laptops lying around. Set one up as a server. Bonus if it's a laptop, because then it has a built-in UPS. Set up a good firewall between it and the rest of your network (or DMZ it, whatever). Done.

I recently installed a new head unit. I specifically bought one with AUX in because I've never got Bluetooth working reliably. It also came with Bluetooth though, so I figure-- what the hell.
It actually synced up with my phone, and automatically re-connects. It takes ~15 seconds, which I guess is "normal" for startup times these days. But all I do is get in the car with my phone, and it works.
I figure I got a defective bluetooth connection that accidentally works by mistake.

I meant that when you unplug the default device Windows tries to use another, which may be your headset.

Sounds a bit more expensive than leaky feeders. Despite the lack of a mention in that article, the principle is also used for mobile telecoms.

Status: Having bought the first part of my next build (the case!), it's time to decide on a platform. i7-6700K and i7-5820K both seem to be good candidates that will each set me back around $300, with benchmarks showing the former slightly better for games and the latter slightly better for compiling/rendering/etc. It may come down to pricing out the motherboard/RAM...
-
@Groaner I've got an i7-5820K and it seems to work very well with games. Make sure you budget for a good CPU cooler separately; the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo that I'm using was a reasonable price, performs well and was pretty easy fit.
Also, make sure that your mobo can support your CPU and memory; they need to be matched properly. And make sure your case is large enough if you're fitting water cooling for anything. :( Here ends the lesson.

Yeah, I'm looking into a self-contained watercooling unit, especially since I plan to overclock to 4.0 (or near 5.0 with a 6700) or beyond.
Also, make sure that your mobo can support your CPU and memory; they need to be matched properly.
I'm aware, which is why the choice between LGA 1151 and LGA 2011v3 is the most important in the build.
And make sure your case is large enough if you're fitting water cooling for anything. :( Here ends the lesson.
I got a mid-ATX case which seems to have a reasonable amount of space to work with. It certainly has more drive bays than I could ever need.

In service of a joke, yes.
-
@Groaner said in The Official Status Thread:

I've only got water-cooling for the graphics card and I don't overclock, but that's because running quiet while running games was a key objective. My previous gaming machine was like listening to a power drill in a tumble drier towards the end, so keeping the racket down was high in my mind.
For most things, as big an SSD as you can afford and as much memory as possible will have a bigger effect than the fancy end of CPUs.
-
@dkf I've gotten my home desktop down quiet enough (Hyper 212 Evo + 950 GTX) that the PSU fan is now the loudest thing, because I have some Raidmax 630W that was on sale. Thinking about replacing it with a CoolerMaster RM550x (I think that's the right one) because Tom's Hardware says it's very quiet.
Well, I assume it's the PSU--my testing consisted of a finger to the hub of every other fan on the machine to stop it temporarily and listening for volume changes. PSU fan's in a place I can't reach.
