Not a choice. IT pushes it. But the Mac isn't my main machine. And they can't push software to my Windows machine. HA!

It might have been what Roald Dahl was thinking of with the original title too, given some of his other output (he didn't just write for kids) but the book at least explains that the F is for Friendly.
Yeah. Suuure it isβ¦

@dkf I actually saw that movie over the weekend; I was visiting my parents, and my dad had read it to his class for the previous couple years and wanted to see how it turned out. It was quite good, I'd say.

L1 was decommissioned back in 2008-ish. It was a Compaq Presario V2000 laptop.
L2 was decommissioned in 2010, I don't remember what it was.
L3 was decommissioned in 2012, it was a Gateway M5 (I think) tablet.
L4 was decommissioned in 2014, it was a Lenovo Thinkpad X61 tablet.
L5 is in operation, it is a Sony Vaio Flip that I use as my daily driver/dev machine. If I managed to connect to these ghost machines, I'd probably freak out.
And explore a bit into the mind of @Tsaukpaetra, and possibly some of the backup data that would be on those units.Actually, come to think of it, I might have some archive images available... *skips around the storage servers going on a hunt*

Status: Now that I've resolved the issue in sharing animations across different characters, before I tackle the next item in the project backlog, I'm debating whether or not I should further automate the asset pipeline I have in place.
Right now, I have a C# application that accepts an FBX file and then lets the user select which other FBX files (each containing a single animation) to import as animations. The selections then are fed to a command-line utility that embeds the animations, and then another form pops up that allows the user to group submeshes into files (since the original FBX export contains the character and all possible equipment so that all meshes share the same rig), and split the animations into upper and lower-body halves (since characters can walk while attacking, etc.). Those selections are fed into another command-line utility that converts the FBX into an intermediary XML interchange format, which is then converted into my renderer's native binary format.
As you might imagine, going through this process manually was a gigantic pain in the ass, hence why I built this app to automate the above steps. Taking a character through the current process is probably about ~20 clicks to pick all the animations and group/ungroup the meshes. Since most (but not all) of the heavy lifting is done via CLI already, making the conversion job spit out a batch file at the end containing all the commands invoked is a tempting option. On the other hand, it's going to be a little while before I need to export more character assets, and this would only help for re-exporting existing character assets...

Status: For many years now I have been grilling on a Char-Griller grill. They work great for direct grilling, are OK for indirect grilling, and absolute shit for smoking something. So, I also have a large upright offset cabinet smoker that I use once or twice a year.
Tonight the wife says that my grill is starting to look a little shabby. I point out that there is not really anything that can be done about it. Not like I can paint it or anything. I also say that at some point in the future I will probably replace it with a KitchenAid charcoal grill built in to an outdoor cooking island and get a Weber Smoky Mountain for smoking meat.
"Why don't you just get one of those Big Green Egg things? They do grilling and smoking, right? Then you wouldn't need two things, when you only use one of them a few times a year."
"Seems like a plan to me. I will go take a look this weekend."
This is one of those times where it is easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission, when I spend $1,000 on a grill. It was her idea after all...

Status: I have two tests running. One should finish in about 6 hours. The other will probably still be running tomorrow morning, so there isn't really anything else for me to do. I'd really to see them start doing the main part of the test before I leave, but that's probably at least another hour, and I've been here 10.5 already. Nope.

Whoever decided to continue naming "The BFG" movie that, really should have just renamed it , especially when you're showing the trailer to people seeing Independence Day.
Ya know, that's what the book was called. 11 years before Doom came out.
The makers of the second Lord of the Rings movies were really insensitive to people touched by 9/11.

Since the code in question isn't released yet, it's not a big deal. Getting the build working again was a step on that road. Testing that it will deploy to a virgin environment () and run there is another step. They're not the only ones though.

I feel dirty.
a quick and dirty solution was needed for a problem. the solution involved wireshark and a lua dissector
this is what came out the other end. the only lua I know is what i've managed to pick up by osmosis, and given the language itself not inclined to use it for anything serious in the future (this wasn't)
function sim.dissector(buffer,pinfo,tree) pinfo.cols.protocol = "VI_SIM" local subtree = tree:add(telem,buffer(),"SIM info packets: "..buffer:len()) local v1_packet_type = { [1] = "Lease request", [2] = "Lease reply", [3] = "Data usage" } if buffer:len() < 12 then subtree:add(buffer(0, buffer:len()),"Insufficient bytes to even contain a packet header") return end local offset=0 local protocol_version = buffer(offset,2); offset = offset +2 local packet_type = buffer(offset,2); offset = offset +2 local mac_address = buffer(offset,8); offset = offset +8 subtree:add(protocol_version,"Protcol version: " .. protocol_version:uint() ) subtree:add(packet_type,"Packet type: " .. v1_packet_type[packet_type:uint()] .. "(" .. packet_type: uint() .. ")" ) subtree:add(mac_address,"MAC address: " .. mac_address ) if packet_type:uint() == 1 then if (buffer:len()-offset) < 128+2 then subtree:add(buffer(offset, buffer:len() -offset) ,"Insufficient bytes to even contain a request header") return end local designation = buffer(offset,128); offset = offset + 128 local unit_count = buffer(offset,2); offset = offset + 2 subtree:add(designation,"Designation: " .. designation:string() ) request_ti = subtree:add(unit_count,"unit count this packet: " .. unit_count:uint() ) while offset < buffer:len() do local offset_start = offset if (buffer:len() -offset) < (2 + 64 + 64 + 8) then subtree:add(buffer(offset, buffer:len() -offset),"Corrupted packet - this part of the request too short") return end local unit = buffer(offset, 2); offset = offset +2 local country = buffer(offset, 64); offset = offset +64 local bearer = buffer(offset, 64); offset = offset +64 local tech = buffer(offset, 8); offset = offset + 8 local unit_ti = request_ti:add(buffer(offset_start, 138), "unit " .. unit:int()) unit_ti:add(unit, "unit number: " .. unit:int()); unit_ti:add(country, "Country: " .. country:string()); unit_ti:add(bearer, "Bearer: " .. bearer:string()); unit_ti:add(tech, "Tech: " .. tech); end elseif packet_type:uint() == 2 then [more crap in a similar vein]

Status: It was quite a fight yesterday to get the build system working on Windows. But on the positive side, I think it is great that we use an open-source software, so that it's been possible at all to create a custom build with a fix to a show-stopper (for us) bug within two days.
