Status: Cow-orker, who refuses to use a headset for no reasons she's ever given, is yelling extra-loud into her speakerphone to the person calling from the Caribbean, because apparently the islands have shitty telecom (that's been my limited experience, too, including 'call them 4 times because the calls keep failing to connect', or 'they have to call in four times because I can't hear anything from their end of the call'".

Don't come back, Californian.

Would he be coming back for the rain, or your wonderful company? I'm asking for a friend.

Status: No, you probably don't need me on this meeting, because I'm not going to be writing any custom code to fix the problem you caused yourself, because we've got a spreadsheet interface that will let you fix everything up.

The higher marginal rate can still be a bit depressing when you realize that your raise won't net you as much as you thought it would or whatever.
I suppose so.
I think the problem is people say, "I'm in a higher tax bracket" when they should be saying, "some of my income is in a higher tax bracket". That'd clear it up.

What kind of device?
Vensmile portable computer.
Of course, since I got this used, there's no way to ask for support from the seller, so my next course of action is to get an identical model (and hopefully it's actually identical) and dead-recon my way through mirroring the settings. Now to wait three weeks for China....

@FrostCat
According to the meter on my phone (who knows how accurate it actually is) it is 55 dB in my cubicle, most of which is from that PC.I also have mild tinnitus, so 55 dB of background white noise is pretty comfortable to me since it masks my broken ears.

STATUS Just noticed that Ashes of the Singularity has been released. I'm at a loose end this weekend but there is so much hockey and football to watch... I also have a X-Com 2 campaign to finish up. If I buy it now I think it might just fall into my backlog never to be played. I also have a three Zelda's and Bravely Second to finish too... decisions, decisions. Should I read. Maybe I'll get hammered and play Rainbow Six Seige all weekend...
*edit I think this is more of a first world problems post...

@DogsB Well you can skip the shitty Nintendo games, so there's a timesaver. Then flog yourself for giving that terrible company money.

YouTube did a thing with snoopdog which was quite funny. Gmail had a drop the mike thing to send to people.

I read that they had to halt that due to people complaining. Apparently people were clicking it on accident and getting fired or something stupid like that.

Gee I wonder why. Could it have been because they replaced the "Send And Archive" button with the prank button instead of putting it elsewhere in the UI? And I wonder if people got fired because they literally couldn't even receive the complaints from the recipient because the prank button blocked them!
There was a also a bug where if you tested the prank button by hitting it on an email with no addresses filled in, the next legit email would be sent with the "mic drop" prank even if you hit the normal Send button.

Given the beautiful weather today, it might be good enough for me, too. However, I need to buy fuel and food, use the restroom, and stuff like that on the way, and it might not be good enough for some other people.

Better? (Not shown: Foxy tail. Because I hear it's too sexual or something.)
MLP should do a bunch of episodes where the ponies become (insert other fandom animal here). That way they can
cynically pander to other insane, obsessed fandomscross-promote their brand. After all, there's lots of people who enjoy masturbating to ponies, so why not also let them masturbate to elephant-ponies. I mean, they hit their demographic targeting perfectly-- as far as what their fans like masturbating to-- when they made that movie where the ponies become per-pubescent human girls in short skirts.

Californian
Given that I was born, raised, and spent most of my life in California, and only moved to Washington five and a half years ago, I don't find that quite the insult you seem to think it is.
@blakeyrat said in The Official Status Thread:
Don't come back
I will. :P I'll back at the end of the month to move my stuff out of my house, probably into storage here. After that, it depends on how the contract goes. It's possible I'll move there permanently, or it's possible the job might bring me back here. In either case, I'll be back again some time later to move my stuff out of storage to wherever I wind up living. In any case, I expect I'll be back to visit once in a while; I've developed some very good friendships while I've been here.

@blakeyrat said in The Official Status Thread:
But that's the only misconception I can think of that would cause someone to post, "oh damn I got a raise, this new tax bracket will kill me"
Or a dystopian future where there's an "Eat the Rich" policy. Then a raise may literally kill them.

Status: unfucking NodeBB, one userscript at a time.
What NodeBB does:
- loads images
- replaces image tag src with "aboutblank" and sets height to 2x2
- when you scroll that image into view, it fades it in
causes: jellypotato and fucking annoying fade in effect.
Unfucking it!

@blakeyrat said something about California minimum wage in here. I can't find it to reply to it proper, but here you go anyways:
-
Just ordered 1200 bucks worth of home workstation. I swear, in days of yore the comparable spec would have been like 800 bucks.

Baloney. The last laptop I bought, one of the last of the single-core Pentium Ms, with a Geforce 6800M, and a 17" 1080p display, was $3000 (It was a Dell XPS 17). The base Alienware 17" laptop on Dell's site--a quad-core i7 with 3GB ram and Geforce 970M graphics and 8GB of RAM, is half that price.

@boomzilla said in The Official Status Thread:
@blakeyrat Before I answer: Did you look at the sign?
Yeah, although I'm disappointed that the political cartoonist didn't label it "billboard" or "road sign", because they usually label everything.
-
Yep. Scrolled back to 2008 when I built a machine with the same relative specs (with respect to the top end available). What is $1200 now was $720 then.
Old 2.66ghz yorkfield quad core, GTX280, 16gb RAM, 640gb high end hard drive, 750w psu.
New 3.3ghz skylake quad core, GTX970, 64gb, 500gb SSD, 750w psu.
-
@Weng said in The Official Status Thread:

Huh?
My desktop would have cost me a comparable amount of money for a comparable spec back in the day.
-
@Weng And then the machine previous to that (2005!) Was 1700. But that was higher spec, if I recall.
-
@FrostCat laptops are different. As complete consumer items they have a different set of price pressures.
-
@Weng said in The Official Status Thread:

Oh, I see, so they don't respond to downward pricing pressure like desktops do (or maybe they do respond and you're claiming desktops dont?), OK, thanks.
-
@FrostCat The component market has a tendency to be skewed by the kind of more money than brains people who like shiny and snake oil. Add in the difficulty in getting good quality consumer information and it's certainly a very different landscape than high end laptops.
-
@Weng Machrone's Law: "the computer you want will always cost $5000". Clearly this doesn't hold any longer.
-
@FrostCat Probably not too far off, actually. The web proxy just ate the internet so I can't try it without going home first, so gimme a bit and I'll do that.

@Lorne-Kates It's completely fucked. Everyone is going scriptorcuntyfuck browser widget to solve our problems ignoring that what we're using is shit because we need user scripts to fix it ourselves. The simple and usable soluation is to use fixed width and height images and if some one is curious they can click on the image to open in a new window but fuck me no! The author of this shit show much implement a fucking retarded javascript method that guesses what you're looking at and then load what causing scrolling bullshit.
cc @blakeyrat because he appears to know what ux is and can provide a more concise and easier to read post when he's in a good mood.

Status: playing Valkyria Chronicles. Except my PC doesn't feel like gaming at 60FPS today - but that's fine, a slight framerate drop won't hurt, right?
Wrong. V-sync kicks in, drops the framerate to 30. That's fine. Except the game still thinks it's running at 60FPS, and everything runs in glorious fucking slow-motion with a dash of input lag.
How do you screw that up in a game released after 2000, much less in 2014?
-
@Maciejasjmj said in The Official Status Thread:

... huh? Isn't that game from like 2005? Oh wiki says 2008. Still. More likely due to a lazy port to PC than any shortcoming of the original PS3-optimized game engine.
