I found out that my phone battery was dead, so it wasn't Discourse after all that was making my phone useless. Then I got a new battery and everything was wonderful.
Next day it slipped out of my hands and the display, touch and glass are all broken. Phone is unusable and I can't even wipe it's data before taking it to a repair shop.
I guess when death itself wants a new smartphone for itself, it's useless trying to save it.

Actually, that's probably still 's fault.
-
It crossed my mind that the heat of browsing discourse with it could have shortened my battery life. It was 2 years old anyway. I'm more for letting it fall and destroying it

*pats her three-year-old blackberry*
Lost count of the number of times I've dropped it hard enough to spill the battery out onto the floor.Happily, said battery seems to have got a new lease of life - I'd got into the habit of turning data off by default and only turning it on when I wanted to check my email, so that I could make a charge last more than half a day, and it appears that if I go for a period of time without putting any demands on the battery, it recovers considerably. So I can go a while longer before I have to submit to a modern smartphone with a touchscreen.
Someone needs to make an app that just puts a small animated spider on the screen, which you can position in the centre of the web of cracks that grace every third touchscreen.

Status: Still watching Farscape while I game. Taking The Stone, one of my favorites.
"What is this stuff?"
"That is my personal private property!"
"You stole from the dead?"

No. No no no no no. CMake is a piece of shit.

Steamed works quite well.
Steamed is WAY better than boil. The trick is every few minutes to take the lid off the steamer, just for a moment. Part of the "yuck" taste of the Sprouts is as they cook, they release some of their volatile chemicals. That's where the "sulpher" smell comes from. If you're steaming them, that smell gets trapped in as they cook. So does the taste.
Letting the steamer fart every few minutes prevents that. You get shiny green sprouts that taste amazing, instead of dark brown ones that taste like fart.
And then toss them in butter, bacon and garlic because yum.

Also, even though I changed the title, that doesn't make maven a non-mediocre tool.

I typed a funny water boarding joke, but Discourse lost it by being shitty and I don't feel like retyping it. So suck it.
You should waterboard Jeff.
-
It was like, "if it's not torture, what exactly is it? Like a really inefficient method of bathing?"
But it was funnier before.
Sometimes when you get a 50x error, Discourse posts anyway. Sometimes it doesn't post, but also won't let you retry because "you already posted that". Jesus. I know everybody's said it a billion times, but how do you even write software that awful!? I don't think I could do it on purpose.
I always forget that it's a terrible idea to binge-watch Farscape because they put Taking the Stone, Crackers Don't Matter, and The Way We Weren't all next to each other without any buffer. Yebus.

Is that from a game? Or just a random image?

Waterboarding is a form of water torture
Well, sure, because Wikipedia's a totally unbiased and neutral source, right?
Ben, anything people will do voluntarily--which includes, IIRC, all US Special Forces, and a number of journalists--is not likely to actually be torture.

Does your primitive cave-phone not have a replaceable battery?

Status: Running upstairs while wearing flip-flops is a bad idea. Flip-flop caught on stairs and caused me to bust up both shins, both knees and make a horrible mess with my drink glass.
Costco brand Jack Daniel's may have been a contributing factor. I can neither confirm nor deny this.

Only one way to find out: perform an experiment.
Run up and down the stairs on flip-flops a few dozen times. Then get boozed up and do it again a few dozen times. Compare the number of bruises between both sets of runs. Highest number wins.
1x 500 Internal Server Error

500 Internal Server Error
I figured out why it says 500 OK and it's (surprisingly) not a Discourse bug.
HTTP/2 doesn't have any text after the status code. It's just a number. So what Chrome does is put "OK" as the description instead of having a <1kb lookup table somewhere in memory. Discourse, instead of generating a useful error message, just shoves the status code and filler text into the UI.
Wait, ignore what I said about it not being a Discourse bug.

Office heating broken down? If not then you might want to show them this: http://www.hse.gov.uk/temperature/law.htm
Weirdly there is no maximum temperature specified in law, that caused a lot of grumbling when we had that hot summer a few years ago.

I don't hear any other complaints, so I thought it was just aggressive air conditioning. I'm used to being cold at work, it's just worse than usual today. It might be under 16C but I don't have a thermometer to hand. I'm the only female in this part of the office, so probably everyone else thinks it's just fine.

Just had a conversation with a guy from the company that looks after our ERP. They now need customers to put on a lot more detail on tickets than before because of an "incident" they had with another customer. Said customer submitted a ticket that read:
Can you delete all the data from tables X Y & Z?
So they went ahead and deleted all the data. What the ticket should have said is:
Do you have the ability to delete all the data from tables X Y & Z?
Valuable lessons learned all round.

There's an implied 1800 degrees Fahrenheit

Status: During last night's bout of insomnia, I managed to implement most of a wall renderer for an old-school Doom-style game engine in C#. Still got a few kinks to work out, then I need to get texture mapping working.
DirectX is too easy to be interesting; it's just "Hey GPU, here's my map and here's me, make it so!" But the old Doom engine is fascinating. John Carmack is a true genius.

I'm blessed if I can figure out what they're doing on the building site next door. At present they have three diggers, two of which are busily digging a hole approximately where they went to considerable trouble to fill one in last Thursday, and the third is shifting the heap of rocks on which it's standing by a few yards.

That sucks.
It usually take me a few days after that crap until I feel like human again.
Your best bet, try to stay awake as long as you can. Then some physical activity, then shower. Then go to bad. The later you can manage, the better.

That sounds like typical British construction work to me

Task for today: have a grid filtered to today's date by default. Easy-peasy, right? Well, not with our suite of homegrown controls!
At first, it looks nice - a
Filter
has a collection ofFilterControl
s, and eachFilterControl
has apublic object DefaultValue
. So all you need to do is to set theDefaultValue
toDateTime.Now.Date
, right?Wrong. Do that, and you get a type cast error at the following line deep in the control's innards:
datePicker.Text = (string)defaultValue;
Well, it's still okay, it just means you need to convert the date to a string before stuffing it into
DefaultValue
. But what format should we use? Well, the datepicker on the site shows the date as dd.MM.yyyy, so let's try that......oops, apparently it's August 2nd now. Let's debug it - set a breakpoint on the aforementioned line...
Mouse over
defaultValue
- get "08.02.2016".
Mouse over.Text
- get "02.08.2016"Okay, what the hell is going on? Well, this:
public string Text { get { //Value is a DateTime? in all the following code if (!Value.HasValue) { return ""; } return Value.Value.ToString(DateFormat, CultureInfo.CurrentCulture); } set { if (String.IsNullOrEmpty(value)) { Value = null; } else { Value = DateTime.Parse(value, CultureInfo.CurrentCulture); } } }
So, to set a date as a filter, you need to get the date, convert it to a string, get it assigned to an
object
property, so that it can then be casted back to a string, then assign it to a property where a setter parses the date to a proper DateTime, and then convert the DateTime into a string again via the getter.Oh, and
DateFormat
is hardcoded as dd.MM.yyyy, sodatePicker.Text = datePicker.Text
actually does swap the day and the month.

It appears the shifting of the pile of rocks was so that the baby tipper lorry attending on the diggers could dump the rocks they're hauling out of the ground in the space cleared. Because that makes much more sense than the tipper lorry dumping them on the other side of the pile in the first place.
The third digger is now transferring the rocks that the first two diggers are digging out into the tipper, because one digger filling it directly, and perhaps the driver of the other digger getting on the other tipper they have parked in a corner, and servicing the other digger would be too obvious.
Needs more cursing and shouting and at least one serious case of builders cleavage and some Polish dudes.
There probably is shouting and cursing, I just can't hear it five stories up and over the noise of two diggers shaking theirbootiesbuckets to sieve the dirt from the rocks. Liekwise can't tell if any of them are Polish, and they're all wearing too much wet weather gear for the other.

Maybe; but Marathon is equally fascinating and gets completely overshadowed and unfairly ignored.
Marathon had network multiplayer WITH VOICE CHAT.
