Anyway, I'm measuring my decision making in mega-U-turns/sec now. On a good day I can get up to double digits. I really know what I want to do with my life.
If it is in U-turns/sec you are going on a straight line, not bad. It is a 1 dimensional random walk.

Status: FUCKING HELL WHY DOES IT INSTANTIATE THIS CLASS ON EVERY PAGE LOAD WITH A DEBUGGER ATTACHED BUT ONLY ONE TIME (ACROSS ALL FUCKING SESSIONS) WITHOUT ONE?
AppPool settings are different in your local web server vs. wherever you build it to?

Status: Work was shit today.

Status got asked to pitch a web marketing strategy to fix some specific problems. How much should I charge? 140/hr?
Okay, I cracked up thinking about 140/hr. I will have to tone it down to 125.
-
For the pitch, or for the proposed work?
-
Hmm, interesting observation. It certainly matches my feeling of not really getting anywhere with this. ;-)
I'd probably go for the term "1 dimensional random stumble"; with "walk" it sounds almost purposeful.

So, on the one hand, we're using lockless ringbuffers because fast (I added locking 2 weeks ago cause I don't trust the implementation and cheaper waits).
On the other hand, we've got our own memory pool implementation where every operation requires accessing a global lock. 300K allocs per second.

Welcome back?

i went somewhere?

It's actually a compiler error in Go.
Everything is better in Go. Girls talk to you in Go.

AGAIN with this shit.
> This contact is still showing in the list
> I... wasn't it arranged that it's the way it would work?
> But... first page...
> ..which will eventually overflow to the second. Then the third. Then the whole list will start shifting every time you click something and you'll lose your place. Yes, you will, trust me, you will. You'll hit "next page" and see an overlap. And it's a concurrent system, so you don't need to even do ANYTHING, the very act of other people CALLING ANYONE ON THE LIST will start shifting it! You'll go out for lunch and everything will change! You'll have to move five, or ten pages just to see someone without a call logged!
> Well, someone else called them already, I don't need to...
> YES! WHICH IS EXACTLY WHY YOU HAVE THIS FUCKING TAB, WITH THIS FUCKING FUNCTIONALITY THAT SOLVES EXACTLY THAT PROBLEM BUT YOU GOD DAMNED STUPID FUCKS REFUSE TO USE IT BECAUSE YOUR OLD PIECE OF SHIT SOFTWARE DIDN'T HAVE THAT, YOU COMPLAINED ABOUT IT NOT HAVING THAT, AND NOW THAT YOU HAVE IT YOU REFUSE TO LEARN HOW TO CLICK TWO FUCKING BUTTONS TO GIVE YOU EXACTLY WHAT YOU FUCKING WANTED ALL ALONG AND WANT RIGHT NOW!Fucking... GAAH!
Note: No, I didn't yell at people like that. But that's what I like to imagine I did.

Status: Query is supposed to execute in <0.2s, but the Pre-prod database is in a mood so it's taking 10minutes to not even manage an execution plan. Hurrah!

To line 10 and back...
Also, you were statusing yesterweek about a business trip, weren't you?

Status: I just got an email that the company with which I had two phone interviews wants an on-site "full round of interviews." I'm very excited; it had been almost three weeks since I'd heard from them, and I had almost given up hope.

Good luck.

Status: Apple CEO Tim Cook stated this:
[The Surface Book] is a product that tries too hard to do too much. It's trying to be a tablet and a notebook and it really succeeds at being neither. It's sort of deluded.
I then wonder what exactly their iPad Pro is supposed to be.
-
Woohoo! Congrats! We are all pulling for you. Keep us updated.
-
It's sort of deluded.
The unsubstantiated claims of delusion thread is
(Can we just lock up all of Apple in that thread? the world would be much better off)
-
I then wonder what exactly their iPad Pro is supposed to be.
Apple iPad Pro - Fuck you, give us money![1]
[1] - Product may or may not be endorsed by @Lorne_Kates

I then wonder what exactly their iPad Pro is supposed to be.
But they invented the concept. MS is just trying to copy them.

Keep track of that quote so you can bring it back up when, in 3 years, Apple announces a nearly-identical laptop and claims they invented it.

They actually applied for a patent on removable touchscreen laptop displays. I dare say that I won't need to keep track because it won't be three years :)

That's very hurtful.
Your identity is an illusion. A convenient fiction to help you relate to others, so you have a pronoun to mean "this one as opposed to the others."
You change minute by minute, and nothing is permanent. So what is your identity? "Point" to it.
You say it's consciousness, but that changes minute by minute. It is not permanent. It can be changed, and it does, in spite of your wishes.
This is a mainstream position in modern Western philosophy of mind and neuroscience, but the way.
Pretending you "are" fair or good or bad or a child is just an attachment to a desire. A fantasy of how you wish life was. And an unrealistic one at that. Unrealistic desires will only cause suffering, and they should be abandoned. Do you want them to suffer?
-
I'm going to have to go get some weed to really appreciate your posts.

Writing a bunch of Haskell code will have the same effect.

desires will only cause suffering
the only way to the nirvana, the ceasing of desire, the only true peace?

Status: Discussing on call schedule
I'm on vacation between [date] and [little more than two weeks later] currently scheduled for the first of those two
:scheduler: OK if I switch with you ?
Sure
Uh, is currently the second week of 's vacation. Switching them may not be the best plan.

I call bullshit. I wrote thousands of lines of PHP. Still no nirvana.

Well there's your problem, PHP came about after Cobain's death.

That's another way. going through enough suffering.

One of those clients, I take it?

Also, you were statusing yesterweek about a business trip, weren't you?
ah. yes. the trip i'm on right now.
i wish i was home.
-
Not really. But it was on our legacy platform, which we are trying dearly not to bring with us when the company splits next year.
The problem with this client is that the BA who speccd it was shit and therefore the whole thing is made of kludge on top of ill advised on top of hack on top of latent bug, with no coherent documentation. Migrating it would have been a nightmare.

Status: Returned from a MS HoloLens demo. It's pretty cool. Definitely not the same as Oculus or the Sony thing.
$3000 for the dev kit though? Hmm, I'll wait.

STATUS: Switching my dumb quick project from PHP to node.js after all.
The one thing holding me back was the ease of setting up Apache + MySQL and just having it work reliably on any linux machine you can think of. Since node app is its own server, it was always kind of fiddly to set up. But now I've discovered PM2, which seems like just the thing I need to get that same ease of deployment.
Bye bye LAMP stack. You won't be missed.

Status: Did a feature on an ancient version (2.1) of our app (that one client is still using). Stash was set to auto-merge commits to 2.1 all the way forward to the current version of 7.4.
Currently in the process of resolving 11 merge conflicts among 2320 merged files.
People who say Git is fast: COME AT ME BRO.
Even though EVERY SINGLE MERGE is "keep destination", it takes Git over a minute to sort it out. Every goddamned single file. Thank God there were only 11 of them.
