The Official Status Thread

Status: reverted to Windows 8.1. I'm sorry Win10, it's not you, it's me. We've had some fun together, and I'm sure you're a great OS, but I think it's better if my tablet and you both went our separate ways.
-
Anything specific?
-
I've griped about the tablet UX with Windows 10 quite a few times here. Bottom line - Edge is the worst offender, and I liked the desktop-as-app approach much better than the mode switching. And overall it feels much more desktop-centric.
Actually, it feels like Win8 was the system MS wanted, and Win10 like the system they needed to shut the users' bitching up.
Edit: also, they seem to have removed the Charms/side menu bar without providing any way to access what was there, so if the app actually had some important settings stuffed in there, well, you ain't gonna need it, right?
-
They're fucking not, and I am not subscribing to your goddamned newsletter, and I will never be back to your website.
Web designers who are asked to implement something this stupid have a justifiable reason to stab whomever came up with this in the throat.
The problem is that they apparently actually work.
-

If an app had something that needed the charms bar, there'll be a hamburger icon on the top left now of the caption bar.

Status: I decided at the last minute to take a 3-day weekend. Good thing, too, because my commute this evening ended up taking 2:45. That's two hours and 45 minutes. (1:15 is typical.)

I can assure you that no one is going to go to any trouble to read that message. There is a 99% chance that it it about Dwarf Fortress or Logjam. There is a 95% chance that it includes both.
-
How much of a chance is there that it's neither?

100% - 99% = 1%
So yeah, it occasionally happens. ;)

Status: I drew the short straw, so I get to image and rebuild a RAID array tonight.
I kept having problems getting one machine to clone. It just kept failing, with weird error messages. Then I realized that I had a command prompt open running diskpart with that drive selected. Closed it and we are good to go again.
I should have brought coffee.
-
Status: work choices for today:
a) implement a feature that's specced by a single not-very-specific sentence, which inevitably means it's going to go back to me and I'll be rewriting the code from scratch anyway
b) WTDWTF catch-up time. The bets are still on.

There's a locked mailbox hanging on the wall of our new office dwellings. Yesterday we tried the key that was left on top of it, and it doesn't even fit.
Today, I named the mailbox "Suggestion box".

I thought you limey bastards had laws that stood up for worker's rights? Why is it unpaid?
I'm a salaried worker. If I worked so much overtime that my average pay fell below the minimum wage they'd have to pay.

Are there enough hours in the year to actually achieve that? (£56,940 UK, $66,156 US for comparison)
-
The HMRC website says it's just the hourly rate you have to stay above. So, I could get my effective hourly rate below that reasonably easily as it turns out. Shouldn't have calculated that...
Edit it becomes impossible if you earn more than 42,705 GBP (67,107 USD), allowing 1 hour for travel/eating and 5 hours for sleeping. On the plus side you would still have your weekends..to cry in about your completely insane schedule ;)
-

Ouch....
-
Because it seems an appropriate place; because this is my active SMIF atm:
...re-antiquated myself with DOOM3 (found the DVD looking for something else). Completed it at each Skill Level, without cheating (much) - none of any significance at Nightmare Level, and I only died a few times.
The shotgun is awesome! Pity they did not include the double barrelled one in this version (I like to complete the easy level with the shotgun only, because sometimes you have to get up close and personal. But have to cheat to get more ammo).
-
Doing something over and over again, expecting different results, is the definition of insanity.
Not in Quantum Mechanics, though.
(And with argumenta ad nauseam, of course.)
(And with timeouts when a server is used the first time after reboot.)
(And when the thing you're doing the same thing to is insane in itself.)
(Etc.)

Status: 'The Windows 10 upgrade will partially remove VIPRE Premium agents. This will leave the agent software in a broken state. Support for Windows 10 is planned for the VIPRE 7.5 release'
Why is Windows 10 coming as a surprise to major software companies. MSDN subscription too expensive?
-
The software I work with doesn't like Windows 10, apparently because it does a string comparison for the version of IIS installed, and IIS10 < IIS7.
Status: managed to crash Visual Studio by compiling and running my code. Nice

Status: A coworker found a few 5.25" floppy disks in the office. We tweaked the CD labels for one of our products, renamed it to "[product name redacted] v1.0.0 for MS-DOS 2.0", stuck the labels on the disks, and are having a good laugh now.
-
Guess what's installed on them...

After 25 years, probably nothing recoverable. According to the original stickers, it was some application I'd never heard of but seemed to be a late-80's customer management system.

Status:
an ex-coworker got assigned to maintain one of my first "big" projects as a dev.

Status: Turns out our awesome intern made a few mistakes at some point. The program she was working on seems to have started corrupting its own data files on save. I know for a fact it's something simple. I just have to find it. I sent her an email asking for any ideas, in case she remembers. We gave the program to people to test a week before she left, and we never found any of this stuff :/ I wish people would actually test things...
