Status: Just tasted durian for the first time. It didn’t really smell all that awful. It’s forbidden in hotel rooms because of its supposed putrid smell, but maybe that sets in later if you keep it a while.
Its taste was also best described as meh. Not awful, certainly not great, would not eat again.I seem to remember reading that they were engineering new varieties that smelled less. Maybe they bred out most of the flavor as well.

Further science was done. Rust + Tauri.
No crazy CPU consumption, but I have Chredge on me.
I admire your -slaying powers. Ever since mentioning it here the last time, I still have checking out Tauri as well as Slint on my list. I haven’t actually done anything yet, though.

Status: Nothing like pushing to prod the night before it will become much more difficult to do so for the next week and where it's actually important for shit to work because of said things.
-
@topspin it’s not as miraculous as it seems though.
Tauri gives you a web view, which means I have full HTML, CSS and JS which is my home turf. The background is a single CSS gradient, the ticks are composed of 6 gradients (for the 2/10/100 ticks, both top and bottom), I already had code for getting the system mouse position, and plumbing that between Rust and the JS side is about 4 lines of boilerplate around the 4 lines of code it currently takes to get.
Setting up a timer in JS is trivial, calling an async function to get the position from Rust for the mouse is trivial, getting the screen position if the window is a single call to Tauri’s API, updating a div with the numbers is basic ass JS.
Hardest part is the fact the docs all expect you to be using a build process like Vite with Vite style imports and I’m just going vanilla JS.
Total time from starting the install of Tauri, under 3 hours. And it wasn’t like I was super focused the entire time, and that included various reading of the docs, like how to turn off window decorations and fart around setting minimum and maximum sizes.

Meanwhile I sat on my ass , read WTDWTF, played some vidya, ate some chips and contemplated my numerous inadequacies.
I'm not sure who's the winner here
-
@Arantor okay, let me tell you how far I had gotten:
Open the tutorial, copy+pasta the rustup command to install rust. Copy the command to install tauri, the one to install that other thing (I don’t remember, but there were several steps), and the one to create a new tauri app from their CLI that just got built. In between I’ve task-switched 98 times and wondered how many of these steps install shit, and how many GB of shit I’ve already downloaded and compiled. On the other hand, I marveled at the simplicity of a functioning build+package ecosystem.
Then, I started the freshly built new app template and wondered why that template already has more functionality than what is shown in the “this is what the end result will look like” preview of the vanilla JS tutorial.
Then, finally ready to start the tutorial, I went to do other things, never to touch it again.

I'm not sure who's the winner hereI also sat on my ass and read some WTDWTF, and I was also playing Chillquarium while waiting for shit to install and precompile, ate some snacks and I definitely contemplated several of my own inadequacies during this process because I’ve not had much occasion to properly deal with await/async in JavaScript before (because usually this is handled for me by the various things I normally just glue together)
If you had a pleasant enough evening, I’d say that counts.

Then, finally ready to start the tutorial, I went to do other things, never to touch it again.Well, I already had Rust installed, so I had to install Tauri, then watch as the CLI command didn’t get installed (and the docs are not good at actually explaining this point) and wait for the many hundreds of crates to be installed (Tauri pulled 250-odd, Tauri CLI pulled in another 450)
I didn’t even look at the tutorial to be honest. I just got the thing to install, ran
cargo tauri dev
and started poking around the code to see what was there, and promptly deleting most of the HTML/CSS/JS!

Linux is almost there but just not quite. If I can get a gog installer to run, lutris and bottles can pick up on it but I can't get them to point at a fucking folder and just run it. Steam can though. Why am I doing this to myself?
It's actually running fine most of the time though. Playing Dex! At long last. Battery life is much better too and its not running as hot.

Better try Longkong
Also worth trying among the fruits not available in Europe is Lamyai
And you may find many "cherry" trees (local name takhop), sometimes with small red fruits (but birds are most often faster)

I was talking to a couple of my neighbors today. I've lived here for a little over 10 years and I do not know their names. But I know the names of their dogs.
-
@Gern_Blaanston I know that feeling. I occasionally run into somebody at the store that I worked with for a few months almost 20 years ago. He knows my name but I haven't the damnedest clue what his is.
Status: Well, Mercari suddenly decided to shift what were seller fees onto buyers today. I had decided against selling there when they raised fees to mirror eBay. But now, despite the new policy being active, the actual details are missing. They don't say what the buyer fees actually are, they don't say who covers return shipping on "no-hassle returns for any reason," and they don't say what the threshold for not having to return items to get the refund is. I want to believe that it might be worth selling online again but I can't because they're hiding so much.

Your fault for going to SF. I won't say why, because that's mostly territory, but there are a few things like too many people and horrible traffic that are sufficiently non-controversial for .

It used to be that when I ran a SQL query in Visual Studio (2017), and the query had a
for json path
clause in it, I'd get a single result contained in a "grid". That single result was a fragment of the JSON, and I could click it to see the whole thing.Recently, Visual Studio 2017 started throwing OUT OF MEMORY errors for no good reason. And now the magic link to my full JSON is missing. I mean, the link is "there" but clicking it does nothing. Literally nothing but waste my finger tendons.

You mean the one whose Japanese site refuses to let you log in even if you've got a valid account, just because your current IP is from outside Japan?
-
Goddamn, it took like an hour of manually extracting and rejiggering the JSON to get Jinja to accept it. Kind of defeats the point of automating this shit.
And it's only like 450 rows (partial) rows out of the DB. 100KB.

Hell, I remember when you couldn't log onto it at all from a desktop computer.
Also, can I say how much I hate these "I only use PayPal" people? Won't pay a Square or Stripe invoice, let alone mail a check or money order. It's PayPal or nothing. You could sell hot buttered crack for $5/lb and "hur dur do u hav PayPal I onle do PayPal lol."

I'm working on it, I swear! There just hasn't been enough demand for my free time to write integrations for other platforms.
Especially when such seem to involve shelling out to an Android API library or someshit.

Aren’t you already getting a bit too old for that?
Just genuinely curious, cause at some point you’re getting presbyopia on top of nearsightedness. I’ve contemplated it, but that along with people telling me “it’s great, you just get a little bit dry eyes and light sensitive at night” had me skeptical. Also, you’re like 5 days older than me, so I’m allowed to say that.

It's probably too late to say that, but make sure to look into the potential side effects and
I once had laser eye surgery scheduled, based solely on a specialist's advice. But before the operation, I found out that there were side effects the specialist didn't mention/minimized, and in my case, I decided it wasn't worth it after all.
(Now, that was some time ago, and the risk/reward balance is different for each patient.)

Oh, that's an entirely different story. I don't think any of their APIs are friendly to developers. And while I hate PayPal accounts, I will let them process a credit card transaction if I have to.
I mean people that will not pay except through a PayPal account. Do they not have a credit card at all and use it as a proxy for a bank debit card? Or are they doing the equivalent of refusing to spend cash because the merchant's register isn't a Toshiba?
It's complete bullshit.

Yeah, well not long ago I discovered PayPal does a sneaky thing where they make it very difficult (if not impossible) to check out as a guest arbitrarily. Very annoying when explicit instructions work for one but not another.

-
@Tsaukpaetra God damn that is frustrating, isn't it? I can only imagine what an utter clusterfuck their infrastructure must be. Don't ever get two accounts or they will sprinkle parts of every transaction between them because "use these fields as typed in this form" is too needful to being doing.
