What is wrong with you people?
Nothing. Basically everywhere accepts contactless now while an increasing number of places don't accept cash, and cash is less convenient than card.
I pay for most things with credit, but I still like to have cash for e.g. garage sales or Kijiji
Sure but that's the sort of thing that I'd know about up front and get cash specifically for. I don't carry it around just incase.

I'm like 15 hours into Horizon: Forbidden West on Ultra Hard difficulty, and I feel like the extreme difficulty is making the game un-fun. I'd be willing to turn it down a notch but that would require starting over (for arbitrary ).
The game feels like a slog, even the weak enemies can one-shot me, progression is slow, and enemies take ridiculous amounts of damage. The last boss I fought, still early in the game, took several dozen headshots. Even wildlife like squirrels and birds survive multiple hits.
I feel like I would enjoy much more on mere Very Hard, but at this point starting over seems like a huge pain in the ass.

Ultra Hard difficulty
That's the point, isn't it?
I don't play games on anything even remotely close to that difficulty setting, because I'd end up ragequitting within the first 30 minutes.

STATUS
I have a flight tomorrow so I go to double-check my route. The first train station is out of action all of tomorrow morning. That's fine. Get a refund and reroute. So I reroute and check in. Have a look around the newspapers. Strikes! What!? I check the website. Some of the services may be disrupted but we don't know which ones yet. I suddenly have opinions about strikes.
: What!?! Dying of whooping cough. Look, you drag him out of bed and drop him down the mine if you have to. I don't care if he has to drag the coal out on his hands and knees. And if he dies down there, drag the body up and excise the lungs. The contents of his lungs is our property. We're in the middle of an energy crisis. It's worth a fortune.

I find it both sad and insulting that the vast majority of games increase "difficulty" by just making enemies bullet sponge damage dealers. It'd be way more fun to actually make the enemies smarter instead. But that takes more than 5 minutes so I guess that's right out.

Compromise, we've given the squirrels and birds attacks too.

Status: Just spent two hours going through the detailed guts of the database layer of my application, trying to figure out why I was getting a DB locked exception for some new test cases I was writing. I just couldn't see it, and the fault was coming right from the very bottom layer of "reality". A real head-scratcher.
Turns out I'd messed up the declaration of what database it was using, with the effect that the DB was ending up mounted inside itself. Or maybe wasn't; the state was too weird for me to be sure.

It's 37 degrees outside, or in imperial units 'old people die' Fahrenheit.
The car has 'four zone ac' (open windows). So guess what? It's also 37 inside. Fucking hell.Fake edit: halfway through the trip, driver closes all windows and starts ac. Now?!?! What a stupid cunt.

@Tsaukpaetra how much of a potato is it? My desktop from 2000 could just about manage software DVD decoding without too much drama and that was a 450MHz AMD thing with crappy video card. (I later gave it a hardware MPEG card for DVDs, much improved the situation.)

It's a @Tsaukpaetra potato. You know it's a giant potato, rather shriveled, moldy, and unpleasantly squishy on one end.

It's a 2.8GHz Pentium 4 with 512MB ram and 120 GB of spinning rust.
I installed LUbuntu 20.04.1 on it as it's one of the few that still ship with a kernel that can deal with not having the No Execute bit and no PAE instruction sets.
It played MP3s mostly fine, experienced a few stutters when the network got a bit busy.
I was rather surprised that the printer/scanner combo I plugged in worked out of the box, well, the scanner part. The printer part needed a download but kinda didn't but really did but I should not click the thing that asked to download --- you know what, it worked without me delving into some config file and wording into the command-line, k?

It works. Pushes circulation nearer the skin. I recommend octo expressos.

@Tsaukpaetra honestly that seems like it should be grunty enough to cope with decoding a DVD at normal DVD playback resolutions without difficulty?

Ah, a database that really can fuck itself properly...
Ah, but it can't do that because it can't get a write lock on the inner DB because the outer DB has the lock (and things need to at least transiently pass through that state sometimes). It doesn't matter when reading, but writing...
My code now has an extra check for weird misconfigurations. Better to get a noisy exception during setup than an obscure failure later on (in a place that isn't immediately obviously related to the real fault).

Just because I feel 80 years old doesn't mean I am!
I was going to buy a GoPro until I saw how small they were. I eventually got through Nikon's site by turning off the ad blocker. Hinduscript strikes again! Anyway, I would've gone through NewEgg or somewhere else but there is apparently a camera shortage due to a microchip shortage. It was difficult to find much under $900 (I didn't want a pro DSLR).
Status: Remembering an argument I had with a moron on LinkedIn. The most surreal thing about being a government employee is how much people who aren't and don't know any "know" about your compensation (and competence, but that's another story). Back when I was still applying for in-house developer jobs, I made some remark on LinkedIn about how the hell they expected to find a senior developer for $52K. Well, some dope responded that every state developer job starts at $120K so I was clearly wrong. Even after I posted a link and a screenshot, he kept insisting I was wrong and didn't know what I was talking about.
Sometimes it's like, if I had to pick one thing to blame every problem in the world on, it would be a life and death struggle between greed, stupidity, and lying.

Maybe every state developer job in CA, but not in every other state.
