@Zenith Finally I got them to admit on Twitter that they updated their billing systems in December.
So CenturyLink has a system that:
A) doesn't force phone numbers to be unique
B) does a SELECT TOP 1 and doesn't filter out inactive accounts
C) can therefore send four digits of your service account number and four digits of your bank account number to a strangerBut the Quick Bill Pay totally isn't broken!

Status: So in the short term I bought this 500 GB drive to just straight robocopy everything off the various local drives I've been using in preparation for setting up the new PC. There's an 80 GB C drive that's almost full, a 640 GB D drive with maybe 250 GB used, and an 8 GB portable drive. So less than 350 GB means plenty of space, right?
Hours later, Robocopy is has only copied part of D and it's nearing the capacity of the new drive. Is "exFAT" really that crappy compared to NTFS?

NTFS default cluster size is 4K, while at just under 512 GB exFAT's is 128K. If you have a lot of small files and are writing to a flash drive/card then I'd expect it to be slow. (exFAT makes me think SDXC cards, where it's the required default file system.)
It'd be easy to wipe and test exFAT with smaller cluster sizes or NTFS.

@Zenith said in The Official Status Thread:

Yeah don't do that unless you absolutely must be able to transfer files between Mac and anything else. For everything else, NTFS is just fine.

It'd be easier to buy a good NTFS implementation for macOS than to use exFAT. Or to not share backup drives between systems and keep them all in the native format, whatever that is (the approach I really recommend). If you must share stuff, network drives work better.

And it ran out of space overnight. Unbelievable. I had no idea a different file system would reduce the capacity of the drive by so much.
Edit: I feel like time is running out so it's annoying to have to wait for another drive to be shipped. I really can't figure out why performance on this PC just keeps getting worse. I downloaded a cracked copy of Windows 7 that I want to install elsewhere just to see what a snappy response time feels like again.

If it's any consolation, people felt the same when drives started approaching 2 GB and clusters went to 32K.

@dkf As annoyed as I am at the resulting miscalculation, I do think it was nice of Western Digital to default to a more compatible format.
Status: I sure do underestimate stuff on a regular basis though. The storage containers I ordered through Lowes arrived a week early so I picked them up today. I thought "alright, I'll box up some stuff that's been at my parents' house for a few months and then I'll use the rest to box up stuff at my house." And here I am at my house with no boxes left over because I had so much crap over there. So now it's off to order more I guess. But it was sure nice to accomplish something just the same.
I just don't know why I can't keep up with this stuff. It's not like I'm ordering figures by the case anymore. The $40 I spent last week (finally found the stupid Elita-1 from the awful Netflix TF series) was probably the first $40 I spent on figures at physical retail in 2021.
I really want to get this house all boxed up and moved out of the way (thinking of filling my room at my parents' house solid to accomplish this) so I can find the many items that have vanished from sight over the last decade.
Edit: Also, I have been watching through TNG, mostly to help me sleep. Is it just me or is the dialogue for the first few episodes absolutely awful? Riker talks more like a robot than Data for crying out loud. Then there's this marked shift, like somebody put Roddenberry in a retirement home or something. It's still a little weird though. But I was surprised how early they set up Lore and made this big deal about his ability to use contractions even though Data was throwing them all over the place an episode or two before.
-
TNG had a rocky start, including some pretty dreadful early episodes. It gets noticeably better in the later seasons.

It's the reason the TV tropes entry on getting better after a bad start is called growing a beard. Once Riker's not clean shaven any more it gets good

Last night I was driving to a lady's house, in the dark, in a faraway town I'm not familiar with, along a route I've never driven before. That's fine, I had my Android phone's GPS to guide me.
I was about 15 minutes away from her house, in the middle of nowhere, when my phone decided it needed to update Android. Right now. (I'd been hitting the snooze button too much already, apparently.) I was actively using the GPS navigation when it abruptly shut down.
I had to fucking pull over and wait 15 minutes for it to patch and reboot. No idea where I am, no idea where I'm going, no way for me to call or text her and let her know
was going on. And then... Optimizing apps.
FFS.
She was very understanding about me being a little late but I'm still livid about the experience.

AIUI that only applies on the land of one of the Indian tribes. The rest of it, including other Indian land, simply keeps the same time year round. The
time changes affect enclaves within enclaves of those tribes.

I haven't had any forced updates, and my phone is about as close to stock Android as non-Pixel devices get. But the blessing and curse of Android is that different manufacturers can do pretty much whatever, within certain limitations (and even more, outside of them)

âTimezone: Denverâ means âIn the timezone where Denver is the largest city in that specific timezoneâ, which allows for some weird funkiness when two places mostly in the same timezone had one place screw around with things. Yes, it's a fustercluck, but I can't think of a better way to do it given that operational timezones have to account for more than just what is the current local time w.r.t. UTC.
Blame politicians.

Phoenix has its own entry. There is no excuse.
I'm much closer to there than any other place, and the phone network knows this intrinsically.

Itâs actually pretty devoid of cockatoos around here. They certainly exist, but I rarely see or hear any.
No, this was a line of lorikeets perched on my arm, getting a bit irritable since theyâd already slurped up their sugar crack. So taking turns, one would poke around at my hand, Iâd shake it off, and the next one would inch down.
I was a bit harsh in my critique of their vocalisations; seems the noisy ones could just be juveniles of some sort, with the adults doing a very pleasant, soft sort of chirrup. Unless theyâre starting to suffer from withdrawal.
Also it turns out there are at least six nearby. And theyâre all hopeless addicts. Today theyâve taken to clinging onto the bamboo door curtain thing over the back door, that was placed there mostly to keep curious magpies out of the kitchen (after more than one drama there). Bloody birdsâŚ

Status: Chrome's new "I'm angry you won't let me force update every five minutes" trick is to have the GPU process lock up 250MB+ of RAM and then spawn up to a dozen "Renderer" processes to consume another 45MB each.
Edit: Also, the eBay saga continues. When eBay sided with me that manhandling and breaking your toy didn't mean it was not as described, the buyer ran to PayPal and told them it was an unauthorized purchase. I'm not yet sure how that will play out, as PayPal just a few months ago sided with an actual scammer that advertised one thing and sent another to my mother. As far as they were concerned, as long as the seller sent anything (a brick, used napkins, an empty box), that was good enough.

I hate it when the Renderers as a pack decide they're going to smash through the 4GB limit. Each. (My experienced tip for resolving this: close some GitHub tabs, since those really leak memory. They must be doing SPA shenanigans, and a bunch of big diffs being reviewed can inflate things horribly.)
