Get that protocol some citizenship, right now!
I'm going to move them to sovereign status instead.

Status: Hmmm. Okay. I guess it's time to step away for a time.
Have fun all y'all. Maybe I'll look in in a couple of years.

is going on at ?
If I read correctly Polygeekery was permabanned? I didn't agree with his politics and he was oftentimes an asshole, but when I opened a thread in Help once he saved my ass.

@error I think his is a 7-day, unless something escalated from the last time I checked in.

In other news, Java still sucks.
Like, I've spent way too long already trying to figure out the magical incantation to start Minecraft FML from the commandline, which is giving me grief because the invocation is literally too long for the shell to parse.

@Polygeekery is on a permanent ban

Please tell me this is on Windows? On any other platform, that'd be a major but on Windows () it's just the ridiculously short space for passing arguments.

You are correct.

@error A technique that's used with many Java build tools to avoid this is to build a text file with command line arguments, one argument per line, and then to pass that to the tool with
@filename.txt
. (Otherwise you run into real problems withjavadoc
especially.) However, it requires cooperation from the tool so who knows whether there's anything equivalent here.

-
Oh, I found a nifty workaround.
If the game crashes during init, the launcher doesn't close and you can launch again. Since I'm trying to develop an init routine, I can just synthesize a crash after my code runs and the result is verified, and the launcher will stay open!

He's also said that only some spam bot looking user was permabanned, so Norns knows what's true.

@Polygeekery is the one that bit refers to. He was permabanned after the post saying only the bot got a permaban.

@Parody Where the heck can you accrue that much sick leave? Even government tops out at something like 120 days. It's funny how the world works. First time around, I liked my job so much I simply never took off. The payout was a nice surprise. This time...well, I've been saving up for the biggest payout I can get when furloughs hit. The number I'm looking at right now...wow, sure would pay off alot of bills.
-
So, I've proposed something like this before (probably in the Bad Ideas Thread), but hear me out:
It's clear people feel uncomfortable with the views expressed on this forum. It's also clear people feel attacked, discriminated against, or are generally just sick of every discussion becoming a fight. Finally, it's also clear that people feel the admins and moderators may not be neutral.
I think that, in the current climate, it may be impossible to be neutral. So I'm proposing that we set up a number of "echo chamber" categories, that, like the garage, are only visible to those who choose to see them. Unlike the rest of the forum, though, these categories will be moderated by the people they represent. They will make and enforce their own rules, and don't have to pretend to be unbiased. These partial moderators will not have the power to ban you from the site, but they will have the power to eject you from their echo chamber. So, if they feel antagonized or harassed, they have a simple remedy available, and no one can complain it's unfair (because each echo chamber is sovereign). You won't get banned from the site, just the category. If you don't like what's happening in a category, leave it.
Safe spaces for those who want them, battlegrounds for those who want that.

Well, not permanent permanent.

@Polygeekery I never thought I'd say this, but it's good to see you.

What arson did you do to get un-banned?

@TimeBandit well, someone seems to have burned the tinpot dictator's throne. But I don't have access to that area.

I don't know. It would be harmless to try, but I feel like based on what happened with the Salon unless you actually have a team of active moderators, this may not really be all that successful.
I would be delighted to be proven incorrect though.

Pretty key to the proposal is the idea of each category being moderated by the most active contributors in that category. Representatives.

IOW, the Garage would be moderated by the most active contributors to the garage.
Not sure this would really work

Well, I wasn't including the Garage as being part of the system, but since the whole idea of the garage is a storm, I'm not sure it could get worse anyway.

@error I see the "Posts don't actually reload the first time when editing them" bug is still there...

Bugs are hard to fix, it's probably easier to fix societal issues, right?

You, of all people, can't claim not to know Rule 34.
Unrelated: loading threads from WTDWTF has been reallllllly slow for me for the past few hours. Have you noticed the same thing?

I blame a few users' panicked request to download all their data, which is not cancellable and will bog the node down until it finishes. Worse, the credits probably ran out so the node itself will be CPU capped.

Is it safe again to downvote people?

@Luhmann Yup! It's also safe to hope they die!

Am I the only one that found it funny that, while @boomzilla was banned, he was still responsible for all the downvotes?

@pie_flavor when I read your post in the topic list's "last post" column, I thought you're making a neo-nazi joke.
How's finals?
-
@Gąska The university told us that we were allowed to petition to make a grade credit/no credit, which unlike a letter grade does not affect your GPA. How're finals going? Well, I'm getting my goddamn money's worth out of this ability.

I'd be up for being a moderator in something like that. And given that I don't even block people or threads I don't like, I think you'd probably best put me somewhere with people that are fairly agressive and talk about things that others find offensive.
-
@Carnage said in The Official Status Thread:

Yeah I don't really get offended (in my opinion), I just get bored, which is dangerous for moderation...

Status: Seems like there's something to be said for dragging your feet and looking over your shoulder. Also, man, I'm getting old. The pace at which everything is changing this year is way too fast for me.
Still, it's nice to see something optimistic for a change.
