@Luhmann No, I've been watching YT videos. It started out as a more-or-less random pick of one of their often lame suggestions, but it turned out to be rather interesting, and I've been watching a bunch of other videos by the same guy for the last couple of days. Guy runs a machine shop in Pensacola, FL and does videos of some of the projects he works on. I'm not a machinist, of course, but as an engineer I had to take a machine shop class in college, and my dad had a metal lathe that I used a bunch, so it's interesting to me to watch how a real pro works. He does a lot of repair work, so they're custom, one-off projects, and sometimes he has to figure out not only how to fix it, but how to get the thing that was never intended to be repairable apart to start.

The human brain is very good at detecting patterns. So much so that it will often start seeing them in noise when there are no actual patterns to be seen.

I'm sure they say that about encrypted streams too...

One of the main aims of modern encryption is to make the encrypted data look like noise to anyone who doesn't have the key. (Compressing the data is a good start to this; compressed data looks extremely similar to noise when the algorithm is any good at all.)

Status: What's with this current trend of making all training materials and tutorials only available in video format? That's so inefficient for those of us who read at faster than snail speeds. Plus having to seek back and forth. Text > video unless it's showing how to do some specific technique on a physical object.

Yeah, I find it extremely annoying to watch a ten minute video of what could be compressed to a a paragraph of text, and I (apparently) read at 10% your speed. (I don't even think my eyes would work as fast as what you said you read)
The thing is: monetizing YouTube garbage is easier than blogs. And often it takes you 10 minutes to find out you wasted those 10 minutes.

Best part--the direct cause of my mini-rant there isn't even on YouTube, nor is it monetized. It's a set of training materials for lay leaders at my church.

Exactly! Maybe my brain has simply come closer to getting a workable key...

I accidentally hit a wrong keyboard button in some application that put it in a weird mode that I couldn't use. I couldn't figure out how to revert it. I couldn't find any online keyboard shortcut guide, and the only thing I found was a 20-minute video of some guy explaining all the shortcuts. I had to watch a 20-minute video all the way through to find the 3-second section where he explained the key combo I needed to get back to "normal" mode. I wanted to bash my face into my desk until death, and then beat him and the application's vendor to death with my corpse.

I run into that when I need to replace a car part like when my rearview mirror fell off. Not only do they talk and talk and talk, when they finally do something, either ridiculously poor lighting or their enormous meat hooks obscure what they're doing.

Ah. Apparently, if it errors at all it just kills the loop entirely. Nice.

All multiplayer games today seem to use "matchmaking". You have to "queue" for 5 to 10 minutes, until the game has somehow managed to make 2 teams of 6 people each (which seems to be quite a challenge despite the hundreds of players that must be online), you have single 10-minute game, and you gain "experience" or whatever the fuck pointless ranking system you have and you get kicked out and have to search for a new team again.
Back in my day (TF2 before the updates) you just joined a random server with 20-30 players, and started shooting. You didn't care what team won, you didn't have a rank or any sort of tally of your past performance. You just had fun seeing if you could get the intel from the other team or get that annoying Sniper. And you didn't have to fucking queue!

@Benjamin-Hall Roughly an hour later, it's basically clean. Not pristine, but much much better. Literally years worth of grime and bits and hair in there. Thankfully mechanical keyboards are pretty forgiving (compared to the membrane ones).

@Benjamin-Hall reminded me that my next thing to do is to tear the keyboard apart and clean it. I'm waiting for some supplies to help with that and a couple other cleaning chores. Current delivery estimate is "some time in May, if we feel like it".

Yeah, it was quite a lot beyond that level. More of a "take all the key-caps off, run dry cotton swabs in all the crevices to get the big chunks off, then use alcohol-laden ones. Then clean the key caps with alcohol and re-assemble" job. Plus vacuuming up all the debris (of which there was lots. It was nasty.
