They rather work like cash withdrawals in that regard so I can see why banks are loathe to make them directly accessible over the internet.
What's the problem with that? That's how debit cards work in France, and apparently it's the same in Sweden according to @Atazhaia.
Of course, this means that banks have to take measures to prevent fraud (here, they typically use 2FA, using different implementations depending on the bank).

lol @ these ripped sprite sheets demanding credit to the person who dumped them from the ROM. You never had the copyright in the first place, guy.

We’ll have to call the whole thing off.

Debit cards also have no methodology in place for them to be used online.
@error_bot giphy wat
The problem probably stems from the fact that they're directly linked to your bank account. They rather work like cash withdrawals in that regard so I can see why banks are loathe to make them directly accessible over the internet.
Large providers like Amazon and intermediary services like PayPal usual offer direct debit from your bank account - that's completely independent of your card, however.
I don’t understand your distinction.
I can pay online with my bank card IF the payment processor supports it. I also can pay online with my Visa card IF the payment processor supports it. What magic is the Visa card supposed to have that the bank card isn’t?

WTF a new Comanche game is coming out this year. What decade is it, again?
-
Status: 18:00 local time; AC is running because it's 29° and 50% humidity. It's technically still winter. I'm so looking forward to August.

@Gąska asked for the decade, not the season.

@Gąska It was 18:00 when I looked at the temperature on my way home. Then I posted this somewhat after 18:00, when I got home and looked up the humidity.

If I proposed Unity, would that be better or worse?

@Tsaukpaetra Not quite. Traffic was slow, so it did take longer than it would if I had left later, but I also did a few other things before posting, like finishing the thread I was already in the middle of.

You might want to check your ALU for errors.

Do you want to actually finish the game, or just have fun making it? If the former, Unity is fine. Although last I checked (several years ago), the free version wasn't very good for team development; do you know if this has changed?
Edit: turns out it has!

So anyway, if it was a serious idea - count me in.

It's for fun.
I actually had a commercial license for Unity, but it lapsed. I've completed official certification training.
I don't know how it is for teams because literally no one has taken me up on my offers for collaboration.

It's been well documented how inaccurate it is. Still makes a terrible PRNG though...

If the end goal was a finished deliverable we'd have to do shit like project management. That sounds. Unfun.

So let's ditch the engine and do it the hard way.
If you really want it to be a web app... Are you okay with experimenting with WebAssembly and Rust?

What magic is the Visa card supposed to have that the bank card isn’t?
Legal magic. German law probably makes the banks liable for all losses incurred this way, so the banks refuse to allow any withdrawals by the mechanism.

Which mechanism are you talking about? As I said, both are possible if the payment provider supports it.
-

Well for sure they're technically capable of supporting it, it's not difficult and the expertise is definitely available. If there's a reason why it isn't happening then the reason must be legal…

Honestly, no idea.
On the one hand, I barely know enough JS to edit a user script here and there (but really, programming languages aren't that hard, experience with the libraries is the more crucial part), and I know literally nothing about web development. Well, other than that it seems a clusterfuck.
On the other hand, learning Unity from scratch sounds like it is much more effort than learning JS. And I'm not really sure what such a game engine is even used for. Rendering, asset management, some physics like collision detection, ... That can hardly be all, considering these things are massive. Well, if @Tsaukpaetra is to be believed, one thing they do is create huge, entangled balls of .I love Zelda, so the idea sounds fun. I haven't done much programming in my free time for quite awhile, though. (And not too much at the job, either. I seem to have Peter-principled up to a stage where all I do is bullshit like prepare powerpoint slides, talks, acquisitions, write project reports, and other management-y bullshit I both hate and am not even good at. )
So you'd probably both spend more time on it and be 20x more productive than me.@Gąska said in The Official Status Thread:

If you really want it to be a web app... Are you okay with experimenting with WebAssembly and Rust?Learning Rust is on my list of things-I-want-to-do-but-never-will anyway, so that'd be two birds with one stone.
I started reading the Rust book one day until chapter two where you're creating a trivial guessing game, at which point I got distracted and started reading the Rust library's implementation of a PRNG instead.
So, consider me willing but weakly capable.

I can't speak for Germans, but here, debit cards aren't cards in the way credit cards (and, as I understand it, US debit cards) are. There is no 16-digit card number, and no CVC number on the back. There is also no specific credit line per card - it is common for a married couple to both have a debit card with which they authorise payments from the same shared checking account.

I wouldn't describe what you've got there as a debit card at all, but rather just a bank card. Might as well be a shopping loyalty card for all the general use it is…

Works absolutely fine, although you might need a usb C one or a converter if you're not going wireless.
Windows key works as the apple key, ctrl and alt are as expected. The order is different from an Apple one but it doesn't take too long to get the hang of it. There are a couple of other differences like @ and " being swapped, although that might be specific to the British English layout
