🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD
-
Oh, right.:) They say you should not judge a book by its cover. I suppose we should start saying that you should not judge a website by its domain name.
The thing about disappointment (and the subsequent transfer of rage / blame etc), it that there is a direct relationship to that and of expectation.
For fun, I would create a new thread purely for the expectation / reality of domain names, but I'll give you first refusal on that.
-
Go for it. I also have a second.
penisland.net
don't worry. It's work safe.
-
Hmmm, this project hasn't started yet and there are already signs of secession.
penisland is an example of a deliberate or accidental creation of an amusing URL.
Before looking my guess was Pen Island and thus it would have been accidental because there would be no other way of doing it without using non-alpha characters. No that I have visited, I am more inclined to think it was deliberate. Furthermore (to cut a long story short), suspect.
The sharklaser is more of a definite misrepresentation or misuse of an URL as per your post.
I am of the inclination that they are separate and distinct.
-
And I just leaned not to trust the search function here.
It's sometimes about as useful as the search on the old forum software.

Much like campanal.com
-
"campanal"
Yet another class of name.
-
I'm thinking its more of a problem of raised expectations. I was expecting an island made of penises. What I got was pens.

-
Bad idea: clicking notification. I would now be completely lost about which of the last 9001 post I have or haven't read, if I didn't know I've read none.
-
-
They meant it, too, when they said "come back later". Refresh did nothing--I had to copy-paste the link into a new tab.

I've always liked http://www.therapistfinder.com/

Bad idea:
While reading about Peeple, there was a reference to Unvarnished, a website that tried this same idea (and failed) in 2010. Just for lulz I typed in unvarnished.com and was taken to a completely unrelated website that has it's own bad idea: sideways scrolling. The creator of the website seems to be particularly proud of the fact that his is one of the few sites on the Internet to use sideways scrolling.
-
That site feels like jankyscroll on my dhromebook.
-
Bad idea: Not coordinating the teaser photo and the main article's headline.
The text directly below the photo reads as: "Refugee crisis is now a matter for the boss"
-
Amazing.
-
Going to be great quality
-
I've actually found that smartphones tend to have better audio quality than mildly decent studio-quality recording hardware, so if they have older cameras, an iphone probably would be an improvement, and would definitely be more portable.
-
-
Oh, don't get me wrong, I think they'd be better served by getting androids instead, or maybe even windows phones.
-
windows phones
Like, say, the Lumia 1020, which should probably come up fairly quickly in a conversation about phone cameras, unless you're insane.
-
I have one. The camera is like a tiny God.
-
The camera is like a tiny God.
It won't work unless you burn some goat blood in front of it?
-
And the Wombat said onto his follows, taketh pictures of thy cutest animals and it shall please me. Thus man went forth and tooketh pictures of the cats and squirrels and the puppies.
-
Already covered this. Though it's nice to have an update on the status. Looks like they figured out it's a terrible idea.
Or not.
-
This is real Comic Sans abuse ...
-
Discosearch is perfect. You see, it knew that you had some updated information on the topic of Peeple which we did not have here, so it hid the information from you to coerce you to post it. Discosearch is actually highly advanced.
Apparently, the founders of Peeple are doubling down on stupid.and have now hired a CTO.

I think it's starting to look like we might need to jeff this into the Evil Ideas Thread instead. At this point they are intentionally doing this.

There's a fine line between Evil and Stupid.

I wasn't sure where to put this, so I'm dropping it here.
Facebook temporarily blocked the account of a man after somebody reported him for having a fake name.
That poor man:
He sent the Facebook Powers That Be copies of his driver's license, his passport, and his credit card, all showing his name, which he legally changed in 2007.
Facebook's response: Nope! We can't use your ID to confirm your identity.
Next he sent a letter from the police, a letter from the UK Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, a copy of his electric bill, a letter from the council, a copy of his work ID, a copy of his bank card, and a letter from his bank.
[...]
Finally, this is what convinced Facebook that his (admittedly quite unusual) name really is his name, as the 30-year-old Londoner tells it in a status update on his now-restored account:
Go to mirror.co.uk, ask for help, get a funny story published, send link to fb. Bang! Back online!
All my 'log in with Facebook' websites like Tinder and 9GAG wont let me use their services either because my Facebook connection is broken.
Seriously though he could have lost his photos and contacts. No idea why he chose to adopt such a name.

I know who I'm down-voting first!

Or!
Here's another idea: we could not be 4chan!
-
We already are.
-
-
We already are.
Pseudo-activism has never been a part of TDWTF.
The word "campaign" was too much. I just thought there's no better way to realize what a terrible thing you've released on the world than to have to turn on you.
-
@magus is right: WTDWTF is not 4chan. 4chan has better forum software than WTDWTF.
Sort of obvious really. Even if some people here are determined to act just as batshit crazy as the 4channers. magnifying glass suddenly turns towards me No, no, no,, I meant other people here!

Taking a picture of your apple while driving at 70mph is probably one of the worst ideas i've ever seen.

Not sure what she could have been thinking. Hopefully that is an attempted murder charge.

Opening fire in a probably crowded parking lot? Moron.

Woman shoots up Home Depot while trying to stop alleged shoplifters
I was disappointed to find out this headline was not correct.

I like a good Home Depot fix from time to time, too, but shooting it up doesn't work.
It's way too big to fit through the needle.
Sorry to rain on people's parade, but since 80 is straight up, this is probably 70 KPH...about 43 MPH. Still a bad idea, but not nearly as bad an idea as 70 MPH.

This is the dashboard of a Toyota Celica:

It has 100 mph on top.

More likely just unlawful discharge of a firearm. In any case: charge the woman. She should not have pulled her weapon, let alone fired it.

It also looks like the speedometer in the apple picture is tilted, and if you look closely you can see what appears to be another set of numbers on the inside.
So, yeah, not only is this person driving 70mph (or maybe 70kph) one-handed, they are also driving one-handed while eating, and then they're using the hand they're not eating with to take a picture.

Looks like it's an Accord, so, 70mph.
-
Okay, okay, I surrender. 70 MPH. I'd like to point out in my defense that I said 70 KPH was still a bad idea, just not quite as bad as 70 MPH.
