🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD
-
I'm not sure it makes sense in-universe for an autodoc to work that way, but Niven is known to have deliberately put inconsistencies in his Known Universe stories.
His stories never were hard science fiction. Neither are a lot of other scifi writers. So?
-
His stories never were hard science fiction.
Gasp! Those are fightin' words (but not to me.)
-
Gasp! Those are fightin' words (but not to me.)
I don't know why they would be, to anyone. Fiction, remember?
-
His stories never were hard science fiction.
Someone doesn't know the definition of 'hard sci-fi'…
-
Someone doesn't know the definition of 'hard sci-fi'…
Well, we obviously do, don't we?
-
I was talking about you; Niven is about as hard as sci-fi gets
-
His stories never were hard science fiction.
They fit my definition of hard science fiction. The stories are, as generally all good stories must be, about the people/characters in the story, but based on plausible science and/or technology (not merely vague hand-waving) that is integral to the plot. I'd be interested in hearing your definition.
-
They fit my definition of hard science fiction.
Indeed, they fit most peoples' definitions thereof.
-
I was talking about you; Niven is about as hard as sci-fi gets
(And here I thought you were agreeing with me.)
Uhhh, no, I would say not, in most of his stories. There were often hard science fiction aspects in his stories, and even a couple of stories he did which qualify in full. I would say the Known Space series generally does not--starting at the timeline point (if not earlier) of Gil Hamilton's psionic hand.
-
Whaaa? His ARM stories kind of are, except the psychic chick who can sense danger when you fuck her.
But Ringworld universe is soft as Star Wars.

head transplants
would probably be more accurately described as body transplants.

I was at the store yesterday looking at Wii and Wii U games. There are like 7 Sonic ones. They go Arthurian, then suddenly LOTR. I don't even know anymore.
-
From memory:
- Sonic and the Secret Rings (Arabian Nights)
- Sonic and the Black Knight (Arthurian)
- Sonic Colors (Orbital theme park)
- Sonic Generations (Retro love-in)
- Sonic Lost World (Super Mario Galaxy)
- Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric (Garbage)

There have been so many great and high quality Sonic games over the years.
(BTW, Sega, I would pay good money for Sonic: Nazi Warhunter.)

Moon Nazis or regular?
-
Presumably Mobius Nazis. (Mobius is the planet Sonic's on right?)
-
I won't lie: I don't really care.
-
A Nazi's a Nazi, right?
-
According to my research there are a few types: http://wikiality.wikia.com/Nazis
Which "nazi" were you looking for?
- The German or neo-ones? (the one featured as a "Wørd on "The Colbert Report")
- The scary "female" ones?
- The hard asses, who won't give anyone a break?
- The jerks at Merriam-Webster?
- Overzealous administrators from Wikipedia, who can't take a joke.
- Ruthless book reviewers who used to review books for some newspapers.
- The ones who have an apostrophe fetish?
Edit: Corrected the formatting manually so it doesn't look like a train wreck.
-
Mobius is the planet Sonic's on right?
Sometimes; sometimes it's Earth, and once it was Planet Freedom (in the mid-90s OVA). Nowadays though, they don't bother with a name at all.
-
A Nazi's a Nazi, right?
Surely not, or the Blues Brothers wouldn't hate Illinois Nazis specifically.

Bad idea: throwing out initialisms without defining them.
Original Video Animation for anyone who couldn't be bothered to Google

Specifically, they got banned because they were used (even marketed, as I understood it) as fake lip piercings. Which rather increases the swallowing risk.
When and by whom?

Not really. We manufacture hardware (PCI, PCI-E, PXI, etc) boards and I constantly have to swap out my hardware. Side panels just get in the way.

Yes, I know, that font is horrible!

Two words:
Ribbon Cables

Ribbon Cables
Would those have suitable performance characteristics for a graphics card?Or are you talking about making a side panel out of ribbon cables, so you could reach through it any time you want, a bit like a curtain made out of strings of beads?

Bad idea: Whoever thought this was a good implementation for "arrange the sequence of these steps":
Yes, you have to click on the itty bitty triangles.

Nothing--it's a web page, so as soon as you click, you cause a page refresh.

Ugh, that sucks even more!

Yes, I agree. You could vastly increase usability just by putting in bigger triangles and making the page Ajaxy.
Of course, everything in the site is 8pt Arial, too, so good luck if you're not 20.

Guess what you're reading, coupled with guess where you're clicking and a whole blank-it-and-move-around when you do click on something? May the designer of this have to use it via Milwaukee PC…

Now I may need to explain my laughing to coworkers, thanks.

Two words:
Ribbon Cables
Two more words: Clock skew
We have some PCI-E ribbon cables and they work on some of our lower-performance boards, but they don't work well at all on the ones that really soak the PCI-E bus.
-
Riser cards may work, but ribbons generally won't. Flexible cables and high frequency digital signals don't mix.
Also, isn't the maximum PCI-E bus length about 6 inches?
