Yes, please do it with a TV,
Should I get a 3D TV or not ?
Intelligent or not ?
Curved or not ?
43, 50 or 60 inches ?
4k or just 1080p ?
Samsung, LG, Sony or some cheap chinese-knockoff brand ?
If it's an intelligent one, based on WebOS, Tizen or AndroidTV ?
With how many HDMI ports ?I just want to watch
the NHL playoffsthe MLB playoffsAmerican idol.
Why the hell is this soooooo complicated !!!I can say it's not true and people mostly just go to the store and buy the one that looks nice and the guy in the shop tells them is he best.
They can do the same thing with an Android phone.

Understand now, do you?

Wait a sec...
- they make Taxi way less complicated
- they evade taxes
- they charge a premium when they can
- they ignore local laws
Maybe.

No because then they'd end up with an iPhone

@dcon You can still find cheap service. My wife's phone plan costs less than $30 per month. Mine is free.

Well, the other day I went to the Apple store and tried to buy a laptop.
The "Genius" guy proposed a MacBook Pro, with a bunch of dongles so I could plug USB peripherals and connect it to my TV.MacBook Pro 15" 16gig RAM, 512GB SSD : $3,499.00
USB-C Digital AV adapter: $49.00
The price of my reaction when he told me there is no functions keys on the keyboard : pricelessI can buy a nice laptop with the same CPU, functions keys, 32 gig of RAM, and plenty of USB-3 ports and HDMI for about half the price. With a 3 year warranty !
Oh, and two important details : the RAM is not soldered to the motherboard and can be upgraded. The SSD is standard, so I can swap it for a bigger one later.
Understand now, do you?
No, not at all.

Oh, and two important details : the RAM is not soldered to the motherboard and can be upgraded. The SSD is standard, so I can swap it for a bigger one later.
Yes - it's a compromise between how fat the device is and how easy to replace the components are. Apple went one way, other manufacturers went the other.
Most people don't upgrade the components, so for them the difference isThe price of my reaction when he told me there is no functions keys on the keyboard : priceless
This put me off initially but actually when in use you don't really notice the difference between physical keys and having the F "keys" on the touch bar thing.

@loopback0 said in Because there's so much wrong with iTunes:

I wanted a nice Unix laptop.
All the other stores only sell Windows 10 machines and I don't want Lorne to call me an idiot.

Ha. Lorne only has two talents - calling people idiots, and killing (trans)hookers. He'd find a way.

Relax guys, it was just an analogy. I would never buy a Tizen TV, I'm too afraid of the "Excel development model".
And I have 3 Chromecast, so rest assured

Yeah, except... when have taxis ever actually been complicated?
That's the truly bizarre thing about Uber: it "solves" a "problem" that was never actually a problem that needed solving! Even completely setting aside their horrendous business practices, I cannot for the life of me figure out what it was that made them popular in the first place!
-
@masonwheeler said in Because there's so much wrong with iTunes:

Well, before Uber, you actually needed to use your phone to "phone" a taxi. Now you can just use the app on your phone.
The phone app is the least used app on a phone now

That depends on what kind of hat it is. If it's a top hat or a real 1930 – 1940s style fedora, yes. If it's a backwards baseball cap or a modern, hipster "fedora," no.

They're not complicated but they can be difficult.
@masonwheeler said in Because there's so much wrong with iTunes:

They're cheap. They arrive promptly. The app gives great feedback on where the car is right now, how long it'll be, etc. The surge-based pricing means there's plenty of them around when there's more demand. Taxi numbers are restricted so when there's a lot of demand you're screwed.
Taxis have worked best for me when it just happens to be right in front of me. Get in, tell the driver where to go. Easy. But phoning to get a taxi to turn up is pretty hit-and-miss. Booking ahead can help but sometimes I just need one now and I don't know when it's going to turn up or if it will ever turn up. Often they don't turn up or they get poached, which has the same result for me.

There's a tin of Blend 43 at work that proudly claims it was roasted in Gympie. I don't want anything from that place!

Oh, nice, how often do you go golfing? Do you have room for a cooler in addition to your clubs? Hydration is important when out on the course.
-
@boomzilla The ForFour isn't a golfist's car, it's a car for people who want one of these:
but also want to be 'cool' (which the Colt isn't).Now this is a golfist's car:

he's American. Anything less than 3 litres or that gets more than 15MPG is a golf kart to him

which mostly looks like a normal small car

As a Brit, that engine arouses me It may have started as two Mondeo V6s, but that's fine for two reasons:
- The Mondeo V6 is a good engine in its own right
- That V12 was built by Cosworth

@masonwheeler said in Because there's so much wrong with iTunes:

Using Uber to get around Houston was half the price of using a regular taxi. The problem that Uber really solves is the ridiculously high prices of taxis, and those are in turn due to some really awful local cartels (which seems to be a US thing, and is a major part of why Uber's finding it harder elsewhere). Also, they make the payment process much easier and provide a bunch of other neat things in their app, but the big thing is that price differential: it's due to a colossal market failure.
-
@dkf The cars tend to be nicer / newer, too.

it's easy to buy from Apple, their marketing is simple, clear, you don't have to choose from x different models which all differ in some weird numbers most people don't even understand.

Yup, so you need to decide:
- Do I want a new phone or an old phone.
- Do I want a large phone or a smaller phone or a small phone.
- What color do I want?
-
@boomzilla said in Because there's so much wrong with iTunes:

That's probably also coupled to the fact that standard taxis are an awful cartel in much of the US, as the amount being extracted by the cartel from the actual taxi drivers is such that there isn't a lot of money for improving the vehicle. Someone somewhere is making far too much profit from taxis, and that's left the door open to something really disruptive.
I think Uber's profit margin is also too large (unless they're bearing the costs of insuring their drivers) but you really can't argue much with “it's half price!” making things much better for customers.
-

Yup, so you need to decide:

- Do I want a large phone or a smaller phone or a small phone.
- What color do I want?
- do I want a ridiculously small amount of storage or pay a lot more for not that much more space?
- what dongles do I need to connect it to my computer/headphones?
