    Well sorry to burst your bubble.

    The correct solution to this problem is to not give a fuck what I think.

    You give a fuck when i misremember previous conversations and so accidentally misattribute quotes to you that you in fact did not say. you give a fuck when i misinterpret past conversations and accidentally present my misinterpretation. You have in the past given enough fucks that if they were plutonium they would have reached critical mass and detonated.

    I give a fuck when you baselessly call me a liar. I don't give a fuck if you think it, and i wouldn't give a fuck if it were true, but when it is not true and you call me a liar i do indeed give a precious fuck about that. as well i should.

    @blakeyrat said:

    The "local" ones (unless you live in Nevada) will get you arrested.
    And that has stopped the practice and profession from existing, nay thriving since time immemorial?

    @blakeyrat said:

    Blakeyrat is using mean words!
    when you use words clearly designed and intended to attack me and/or my reputation, i will do exactly that. You know this to be true and you know that i would be justified in doing so.

    In this case you are not, so i will not.

    @blakeyrat said:

    I bet I get mod warnings for this very post.
    not on my account you won't. If they take it on themselves to tell you to chill out, or someone else complains on my behalf i have no control over that.

    I'll further mention that I have directly complained to the mods exactly three times about you, according to my PM history. Two incidents were nearly nine months ago now, and the most recent one was not so much of a complaint as a "wasn't that a bit much?" question that was CLOSED-WONTFIX by the mods. It was also about four months ago.

    This is of course not counting the times i've asked for various conversations to be split into their own threads so as not to pollute the host thread they were originally part of. If you choose to consider that mod abuse than that is your perogative of course.

    Is that an affectation that displeaseth you? If it displeaseth this one could adopt a different tonality. Perhaps affecting the tonality of a gangsta rapper would pleaseth thou better?

  • No, it just makes you look like a jerk.

    Then i shall remain with my current mode of speech, as it is my standard, save for the fact that i take more care with my phrase selection when speaking to Blakey than i would otherwise.

    Are saying that sidekiq jobs are not part of the Discourse experience?

  • I don't understand why you thank Discourse for SockBot and related? What is stopping you from writing similar bots for other, more functional forum software? I made a little web-app for posting anonymous quotes and maintain a web server purely because why not? Pet projects don't need external excuses, the excuse is that they are fun

    I cast my vote of No Confidence for the following reasons:

    1. Scroll-bar bullshit: Everyone already knows this

    2. LISTS DON'T AUTOCONTINUE! Jeff have you ever used any functional application in your life?

    3. It doesn't feel like a forum, it feels like a very shitty chatroom, and since when do chatrooms encourage "civilized" discourse?

    4. JavaScript rendering: Slow as all holy hell

    5. A billion ajax calls

    6. Who ever needed a clean history anyway? You will just clear it after your nightly porn session!

    7. ServerCooties- Most places that run phpBB don't shit themselves daily, and for unknown reasons

    8. Jeff comes off as a holier-than-thou douche who thinks he is funny with his stupid image jokes

    9. Look at the top few hundred posts of this thread. Look how the community has shrunk since Discourse :wtf:

    10. EDIT: I forgot, Discourse HIJACKS MY SHORTCUT KEYS: Fuck you Discourse! This is MY computer, I paid for it! I manage it! It is my damn baby, don't you DARE try to take control of it in ANY way!

    What? They totally autocontinue. Blakeyrat has been ranting about this for ages. Try making a list 1. 2. 4. and see how auto it continues

    @mrguyorama said:

    Who ever needed a clean history anyway?

    There is an option to turn the history clutter off. It might break other things, though. Just warning you in advance... but it was one of the first things they "fixed", afair.

    @mrguyorama said:

    and for unknown reasons

    No, no. The reasons are known. They are simply everything that Jeff doesn't approve of. Bots, /t/1000, people using the software, etc.

    @mrguyorama said:

    Jeff comes off as a holier-than-thou douche who thinks he is funny with his stupid image jokes

    His last post is from june 21th. Doesn't make his ealier posts better but at least he hasn't been posting meme images for a while 😃

    @mrguyorama said:

    At least this means the smaller community didn't get more quiet ;P

    This is IMO the worst problem. Disco encourages spamming so badly...
    And the cooties.

  • @Kuro said:

    @Kuro said:

    So, why isn't there a "Welcome to Discourse! Here is your hand-holding kit because everything is obtuse and poorly designed" message after you sign up? With a link to documentation that includes info on settings, where to find info, and markdown syntax? Serious question, I often feel that I have to fight and make mistakes to learn anything here

    And that list thing still doesn't work for me. No repro

    @Kuro said:

    It might break other things, though

    And yet they sell installs of this "Software" as a legitimate forum solution? Can we report them to the Better Business Bureau?

  • Winner of the 2016 Presidential Election

    @mrguyorama said:

    So, why isn't there a "Welcome to Discourse! Here is your hand-holding kit because everything is obtuse and poorly designed" message after you sign up?

    Because Jeff in his infinite wisdom after DESIGNING AND USING HIS OWN FORUM SOFTWARE probably decided that everything was perfectly discoverable. I mean, just press ? and you get some handy shortcuts that work almost 50% of the time! (There was a topic about this on meta a few days ago and I wanted to link it here but I don't like searching, sorry)

    @mrguyorama said:

    With a link to documentation

    Afair, your documentation pretty much boils down to

    visit meta.d -> use the search -> get confused -> open a topic -> get told that it's a duplicate -> hope they post a link to the original topic that almost has the answer to your question if your question was completely different -> give up

    @mrguyorama said:

    markdown syntax

    It apparently is some standard markdown dialect you can google for. Don't bother, though. They will change it in the near future, afair!

    @mrguyorama said:

    Can we report them to the Better Business Bureau?

    Better yet, it has already been reported to the TDWTF-forums!

    @mrguyorama said:

    And that list thing still doesn't work for me. No repro

    Maybe we mean different things. Or maybe they fixed the auto correct on the numbers. I don't know and can't be bothered to test things out.

    Filed Under: If you wanna test things, just make a topic in one post or something.

  • IMO It's the lack of pagination that does it. Pages help to disrupt the conversation into discrete and useful units and require effort to be involved in. This is in direct contrast to infinite scrolling that pretty much just pours trash at your face until you've been sated like your scarfing down your tenth bag of chips

  • @Kuro said:

    No, no. The reasons are known. They are simply everything that Jeff doesn't approve of. Bots, /t/1000, people using the software, etc.

    None of which were responsible for today's cooties. We can blame the sidekiq jobs for that. Apparently, Discourse was trying to commit seppuku.

    @Kuro said:

    His last post is from june 21th. Doesn't make his ealier posts better but at least he hasn't been posting meme images for a while

    Yeah, his co-founder told him to stay away from our site. But he still treats us like dirt when we report bugs. For example, in late May I was suspended from meta.d for asking for details regarding usage-frequency of a broken feature (identified by Jeff as "arguing"), and my bug report was deleted (not just my question post, the entire bug topic). I was allowed back on "a 12, 2015". That's right, my suspension revealed another bug.

    @abarker said:

    Point taken. But meta.d is more or less easily avoidable, right? Not that your bugs will get fixed if you don't report them but potato!

    Meh, DiscoDevs saysuspect spam attack:

    Don't really know :wtf: is going on. The only definitive thing so far is that @boomzilla found errors in the sidekiq logs indicating excessive memory usage and too many DB connections.

    @Kuro said:

    And after that they say bots:

    Sam was just complaining that the bots weren't slowing down on pinging the site when they got 500 errors. There's no indication that the bots contributed to the cootie storm at all.

    Pity it didn't succeed (although that was about the closest I've ever seen it get).

  • @Kuro said:

    They've been meaning to switch to a different markdown library for about a quarter year by now.

    They seem to be more part of the barrier to experiencing Discourse.

  • FoxDev

    @Kuro said:

    And after that they say bots:

    @sam wouldn't have said that if there wasn't a reason for it.

    We like sam!

    In this case he was commenting that

    @abarker said:

    he bots weren't slowing down on pinging the site when they got 500 errors. There's no indication that the bots contributed to the cootie storm at all.

    I had missed the backoff code from sockbot legacy to sockbot2.0. what was happening is the bots were crashing (because of another, now fixed bug) when the site hit cooties, then trying to log in again, but with no cooldown.

    That's been fixed so the bots will stop hammering the site when server cooties attack.

    @abarker said:

    There's no indication that the bots contributed to the cootie storm at all.
    They likely didn't cause the storm, but their behavior certainly didn't help recovery.

  • ♿ (Parody)

    Recently, they added an automated "Website Performance Report" feature. There's a topic in staff where the report is posted daily. It list various things, including server load for the day by IP, user and end points. The biggest draw by IP was @loopback0's bots. We disabled a couple of them the other day and I got the others just now. They were also way out of date and generating a lot of 404s due to API drift.

    Next up on the list is @accalia's suite of bots / cyberparts, though @RaceProUK and @NetBot are right up at the top of the list, too.

    We'll see if making /t/1000 read only tamps down on the cooties enough. If not, it'll get moved to Staff or similar. There has also been a lot of activity by non-logged in users, possibly spam attempts or something. Not sure what can be done there.

  • FoxDev

    @boomzilla said:

    Next up on the list is @accalia's suite of bots / cyberparts

    shocker that. I am running the lot of them out of one VPS/IP.

    I'm currently only running 5 bots (well 4 bots and one cyberparts) given that is my IP wildly out of whack for usage?

  • FoxDev

    @boomzilla said:

    though @RaceProUK and @NetBot are right up at the top of the list, too.

    I have four bots (one is my cybers) running on one EC2, so again it'll all be from one IP. Aside from t/1000 activity (which I'll disable later today as the thread has been made read-only), they don't do much; I'd be surprised if they were contributory.

    Now to wait for the inevitable; you all know exactly who I mean.

  • FoxDev

    And I just nixed my autolikers, so my figures should drop over the next few days

  • Unrelated to bots or cooties....

    +1 (re)vote of no confidence...

    Somehow Jeffing of posts from the bad jokes thread means I can't read the thread from my regular IE11 browser (yes me trwtf, blah blah IE blah, but still)
    Windows closing IE, try debug, etc... until it just gives up.

    Switched to Chrome, had a handful of new bad jokes, IE showed 4 gray and 55 blue unread posts - so I'm guessing the Jeffing must be involved... with breaking the thread (for me). :facepalm:

    What is Civilization coming to?

  • FoxDev

    hmmm

    10k for 5 bots, that's ~2k per bot.

    that puts each bot on par with a regular user (i see @mrguyorama is at 2.7k and i assume there's no bot activity there)

    that makes me feel better at least, the bots are on par with an active non cyberized users when it comes to server load. It's just the grouping of them onto one IP that's inflating the numbers (you can deflate them by looking at useragents. the bots set unique to each bot useragents)...
