Status: listening to a webcasted NTSB panel on the issue of trespassing on railroad tracks.
Should be a very short webcast. "Don't".

Trespassing on railroad tracks is romanticized? Is that a thing?
Is that a thing, and also the thing you're talking about?
Brief reminder, since its come up like twice this morning, I am not telepathic.

Trespassing on railroad tracks is romanticized? Is that a thing?
Apparently so. Wikipedia's got lots on the matter.
-
People want to emulate hobos?
You guys are just fucking with me. There's no podcast about people wanting to be hobos.

Yeah, it's a thing in the US culture, including parts of the entertainment industry sigh (If you want to know more, the webcast will go on archive in a few days or so, so you'll be able to pull it up from there if you miss it live.)

It always helps when you have a locomotive engineer speak about her personal experiences as someone who's been through the pain of a trespasser-strike incident...
-
Parts of the US entertainment industry want to be hobos.
-
I see all the time in the dirt bike community where off-road motorcyclists think it's somehow cool to trespass for riding purposes. Random fields in the middle of nowhere are obvious targets but quite a few think riding in railroad tunnels is somehow a good idea.

May their exit from the gene pool at the hands of an automated train be quick, merciless, and well publicized.

And preferably before they begin breeding
-
this pisses off the railway (and the federal railway regulator) no end because of the amount of paperwork involved.
Also, all the squishy bits they have to hose off of the train. Entrails, gray matter, bone, sinew, etc.

They have to do that occasionally anyway, though those victims are normally avian

Everyone, apparently with the exception of you, realized exactly what @tarunik was getting on about. It is not about telepathy. It is about not being obtuse.

that would help...
if i ever become supreme dictator of the country/world i'll probably institute some sort of entire population chemical castration that's only reverseable on passing some sort of common sense test. Those that are willing to think for themselves and evaluate things logically can breed. those that don't want to think because "my pappy never thought and what's good enough for my papy is good enough for me" can't breed.
yes that would be utterly evil, but it would (over the course of many hundreds of generations) effectively remove the stupidity from the gene pool.
I should also see about overhauling the education system to make sure that everyone is properly educated so they don't fail the test for lack of education (because that would be too cruel). I'll fund it with the money that was previously being spent of (american) football ("proper" football or as murica calls it "Soccer" would be safe) player's salaries.
i'd spend the basketball players salaries on fixing and upgrading our crumbling infrastructure.
and i'd probably have to dismantle the military industrial complex too. we spend way too much money on that for far too little gain. gotta spend smarter (and no a $5k hammer is not spending it smarter. i don't care if that's really $5 for the hammer and $4995 for a blackops project.)
and then, if that really happened i could look forward to be ing assasinated before my second week in office.
-
if that really happened i could look forward to be ing assasinated before my second week in office.
I think that is an optimistic time table for that chain of events.
-
effectively remove the stupidity from the gene pool.
Your optimism is... refreshing. Unrealistic, but refreshing.
and i'd probably have to dismantle the military industrial complex too
Oshi... Should I get the ?
-
Physics?
What...?
Perhaps this might be clearer:
Piggy on the railway, picking up stones,
Along came an engine and broke Piggy's bones.
'Oh,' said Piggy, 'that's not fair.'
'Oh,' said the engine*, 'I don't care.'*Another version has the driver saying this, but that's incorrect and rather insensitive to train drivers, as well as not really conveying the same point as tarunik's, so I prefer this one.
-
Could you dumb it down a little bit more? We want to make sure the point is not missed again.
-
I think that is an optimistic time table for that chain of events.
what? that i would possibly make it past day 1 or that i'd be able to announce all those changes in the first week?
Your optimism is... refreshing. Unrealistic, but refreshing.
well it would take hundreds (maybe thousands) of generations of horribly inhumane and unethical breeding programs.... but yeah i think it could work eventually.
should it be done? NO!
could it be done? probably.
-
what? that i would possibly make it past day 1 or that i'd be able to announce all those changes in the first week?
That you would not be assassinated before you even won the election. ;)

Status: emails have now been turned off for 4 days. (Unless Boomzilla's right and Discourse is just lying to all of us.) There's still no import. I'm guessing I'm going to be writing another post similar to this one for 14 days, and possibly 140 days.
From perusing what I can see in the logs, the email got turned on occasionally (again, this is just me reasoning about what I see). I see times of "1 day" and "3 days" ago as the most recent stuff.
The import seems to come and go (as I said in my edit to the brace yourself topic).
New users are still able to sign up, so either there are some emails not disabled, or it's ignoring the emails that get sent like that. For instance, a post from a new user who signed up yesterday:

Because changing an entire civilization is that easy?
-
That you would not be assassinated before you even won the election.
what election?
i'd be dictator! it would have been a coup!
of course i'm not likely to survive the coup either, but this is my fantasy so i can mess with the laws of probability if i want to!
-
Because changing an entire civilization is that easy?
because it's that hard. I'd fail... and fail gloriously... if i tried it that way.
it's just a recurring fantasy of mine. surely you've got one about all the things you'd change if you were ruler of the world?
i was under the impression that that was a common fantasy?
-

I'll be safe then Also, I hope I'd be co-ruler…

I'd be happy to see soccer salaries go to better causes too; I really don't get why some people are paid £200,000 a week to kick a ball around a bit.
@accalia said:i'd spend the basketball players salaries on fixing and upgrading our crumbling infrastructure.
I used to play basketball; played at county level once. So I'd ask what you have against basketball, but then it might just be the salaries, about which I know not how inflated they are.
@accalia said:i'd probably have to dismantle the military industrial complex too.
Good ;)

…you sure know how to shatter a girl's dreams of her own gold-platinum plated hammer…

about which I know not how inflated they are
…I know that's valid English, but it just doesn't quite roll off the tongue…
-

Won't work. Kids are awful beings - so are parents - and teachers. There is no way you can ever have a school system that teaches things, enables students to use their strengths and overcome their weaknesses, doesn't put them under an unhealthy amount of pressure and has fair, unbiased and competent teachers.
-
I really don't get why some people are paid £200,000 a week to kick a ball around a bit.
neither do I, but it's a sport i actually somewhat enjoy watching.
but then it might just be the salaries, about which I know not how inflated they are.
it is and they are really inflated on the NBA circuit.
…you sure know how to shatter a girl's dreams of her own gold-platinum plated hammer…
for personal expendiature that's fine. for public office where a $5 steel hammer would work just as well not so fine
They'd have to get through me first!
i suspect they'd use a cruise missile or an ICBM.... that would be a glorious way to go....
Won't work
i know. i know.still it's a nice fantasy.

I used to, but then I got bored of it; it seemed to become more about the 'personalities' than the sport. But I guess the US coverage doesn't shoot its collective load over every little thing that Beckham, Rooney, and those do.

That… would do it, yeah… Still, through the pearly gates screaming and on fire; sounds cool

hmm..... now there's a piece of art i'd love to comission..... that would look AWESOME!

Please no. This is the kind of stuff that causes state governments to go crazy and start reducing the amount of public land available to off-roaders.

Got to get my pendants somehow!
Maybe @abarker has been taking lessons from me.
Says you and what pendants?

Well, I know I haven't been taking lessons from you. You taking lessons from me is one alternative possibility that your inner pendant can't deny.

If the test is accurate, I think you'll be very surprised at some of the people who will fail it.
-
I think you'll be very surprised at some of the people who will fail it.
at this point i'm estimating it will have about a 98% fail rate.... which would not be a good thing.
generally speaking people much prefer to folllow, not lead.
