Water management

Sometimes you've got to love our management for their creative ways of solving issues.
The water in the town where I work is notoriously bad. It tastes bad, and it is slightly discoloured, but more importantly in order to get reasonably cool water from the tap you have to flush it for nearly 10 minutes. We used to have water dispensers, but they were discontinued to save costs. Our research group promptly bought a fridge where you get cold water (filtered and optionally carbonated) in the door. All was fine in the Land Next to the Land of a Thousand Lakes.
Until we moved, and had to leave the fridge behind. The promise was that they would fix the new kitchenette to our satisfaction. Including a water dispenser. This was two years ago.
Half a year ago, they added a small countertop so we had somewhere to put our coffee machine. This also blocked every possibility for us to add a full-size fridge (or a water dispenser), but our head of department still believed in Going Through Official Channels.
News about the water dispenser has been a standing point on the agenda for every department meeting since we moved. Last month we learnt that an e-mail from the Vice Chancellor about the water dispenser was imminent.
Fast forward until today, when we get an e-mail from the propaganda department:
Starting Monday, September 12, all staff can get carbonated water in the restaurant on the ground floor. Bring your own bottle.
They have solved the water issue! What's more: They are now paying the restaurant a montly fee for the use of their tap with the same lukewarm (but carbonated) water that we can get from our own tap.

@Mikael_Svahnberg
We had a similar silly problem such as this.
The solution was simple, call around to find a supplier to deliver (e.g large packs of bottle water) and give an invoice suitable for expenses.Or even better, if the head of department has flexible expenses up to a certain limit... find a water dispenser supplier that will invoice it as 'bottled water' over several months. Head of department gets told not buy bottled water, by which time you have a dispenser!
-
@Helix Something like this will occur.
Many many years ago we had a kick-off where the bill included the item "Lasertoner, 18-year old, Scottish" (suitably truncated at character 10, of course). Our current head of department is beginning to see the merits of this approach.

I always make sure to buy printer ink from Islay. Only the best for my printer!

Oh we had a cofee machine all right. We just did not have a slipshod worktop to put it on but had to squeeze it in on the kitchen sink.

The office has one of those. I use it as a punishment for when I forget to bring my own coffee.

Your fridge made carbonated water?! Duuude.

I'd be more worried.
Wow, this carbonated water from the fridge is great!
We don't have a carbonator in the fridge.
:/

The question is: what water do you use on the coffee machine?
Aside: I just found out carbonated coffee exists.

I'm pretty sure that's , but I suppose it probably doesn't taste any worse than the non-carbonated kind.

@Mikael_Svahnberg The correct solution, one I used myself while at E*FLAYED:
I took the grinder with me when I left, of course. These are two of the few items I made sure to hold on to after I moved, for that matter.
-
@anotherusername Like, from the toilet?

@ScholRLEA I honestly have no idea what you're getting at there.

@anotherusername That's a quote from Idiocracy

@Mikael_Svahnberg WANT.

@Yamikuronue ah. Only seen that movie once. Also, I thought the carbonated thing was still relevant, and was trying to figure out how carbonated water got in the toilet. (Don't tell me. I don't want to know.)

@Tsaukpaetra I think you need to get another date. Your engine seems to have taken over the rest of you. I mean, it's worse than mine, and that cannot possibly be a good sign.

No time, need job.
Actually, need complete physical diagnostics, but everyone insists on doing armchair judgement and telling me to pay attention to the "random" things that happen instead of trying to find the root cause.
-
@Tsaukpaetra Oh, hm… Good look then.
(And I guess you didn't meet anyone interesting lately anyway, otherwise you'd certainly find the time. ;))

I haven't met anyone at all. The hunt goes slowly.

Nah, I don't mean grind type or whatever, I mean it should be more delicate, light roast.

My espresso beans disagree with you. ;) I have to admit that I appreciate light roasts a lot more since I bought the AeroPress, though.

That's what I'm saying!
I'm thinking about buying an aeropress too. Would be great replacement for our shitty coffee and coffee machine at work.
-
I just use a stainless steel french press. And coarsely ground medium roast (but that's because I don't like the icky burnt caramel taste of dark roasts).

@Captain said in Water management:

I somehow associate the taste with safety and comfort. It tastes like sitting at a fireplace with friends in the winter. That's why I prefer dark roasts if I'm having a bad day (i.e. most of the time).
-
I had the aeropress, but that was too much PITA to use. And I'm a big guy (maybe the grind I was using was too fine).
Got this now, I think it's the best bang for the buck.
