I spend ~$4000/year on fuel at 18mpg. If I could reduce that to $1000/year by driving a fuel efficient vehicle (and I can't)...I wouldn't. But, at best I could reduce it by half. So why should I give a shit? Why not just drive the vehicle I want to?
Saving $2000/year is apparently no big deal to you?

If I told you that the difference between driving a car that you enjoy, or one that you do not, amounts to $5.48/day, would you drive a car that you did not enjoy?

If it was a choice between paying $4000/year for gas to drive a car I enjoy, or free gas for life to drive a car I don't enjoy, I'd pick the car I enjoy.
-
@abarker I'd rather save another $4000 a year and retire 8 years sooner. Or set up a trust fund for the kids with it.

Reading that back over, it is just dying for a Morpheus meme.

I enjoy driving my car and its fuel economy is somewhere in the high 30s / low 40s.

Yeah, but making decisions like that is an easy way to get in to skinflint territory.
Why spend anything more than the absolute bare minimum on anything? Because we enjoy it. Money is meant to be enjoyed, in many different ways. Saving every red penny is not healthy, just the same as blowing every dollar you earn in a frivolous manner is not healthy. Life is about balance.
-
@Polygeekery Yeah, but the "free gas for life" thing is too good to pass up for a car you "enjoy". I'd much rather take the utilitarian Prius and free gas and savings than a slightly cooler, more expensive car. We live in the age of awesome cars. Nearly every new car out there is pretty much the pinnacle of fit and finish. That even includes the Prius.
In fact, sign me up for a cube-shaped driverless automaton.

I am going to say it again so that everyone stops misunderstanding what I am saying...if you enjoy your car, no matter what it is, then that is the right choice for you. Just as my choices are the right ones for me.

For a few hundred, yeah, but 2 grand is a decent chunk of money.

@Polygeekery The Impala (at least the 2000 to the model before the latest) is really nice, roomy, and comfortable. And even the 00-05 model gets good MPG. Mine can go prolly 175-200 miles on a full tank, maybe a little more.
ETA: I should add that I'm very biased though. Hehe
I usually got my 2005 Impala to about 340-360 miles on a tank before the fuel light comes on. I could drive it 450-500 miles to visit my brother in IL with fuel to spare (a decent margin too).
Er yes, you are correct. The closest city to me is ~50 miles, but for some reason I did the math like it was 25. Derrrr
-
@Captain said in First Cars Thread:

Yeah, but most people do not drive as much as I do, so the numbers would be skewed a bit. For most people the numbers would be more like:
(15,000 miles per year/~25mpg) x $2.125 for an average fuel cost of $1,275/year.
But yes, you were responding to it as @abarker wrote it.

Then why not ditch the car, save on fuel and insurance and plates and everything else, and just walk or ride a bike everywhere? Why own a car at all?
-
@Polygeekery I doubt I spend more than $1000/year on
gasfuel at current prices, but I also split my time between a motorcycle and a big crew cab pickup.
-
@Polygeekery it's all down to personal preference. I need a car as I'm too far from work and shops to walk there, but I also enjoy driving. I just don't enjoy driving fancy cars all that much more than little city cars. There's more skill in getting decent speed out of a small car

My wife works at a company that does just that on an industrial scale. It goes straight to new catalyst's.

Pick any of the following: Peugeot, Citroen, Renault and no I currently drive a German, Opel has it too

@Jaloopa "A tax evader" was the pedestrian answer.

@FrostCat being a pedestrian would certainly help you avoid fuel tax

It made me "A guy who was working 60-90 hours per week who did not have time to stop for fuel, oh shit now I am almost out, oh fuck it there's 100 gallons of perfectly good fuel right here, I will get fuel later, and the forgot again".
Classify that how you wish. It was only later that I decided this happened so much that we put in a solenoid valve and a hose so that I could do it from within the cab, while driving.
That was all reduced when we put in on-road diesel tanks at our shops so that guys could fill up when they topped off their transfer tanks. But then sometimes you don't have time to do that...and there is a tanker on the jobsite...so why not?
I bet if you dipped the tanks on 100 construction superintendents trucks that have off-road diesel tanks in the back of them, 100/100 would come back with some traces of red dye. Not because they are trying to save on road tax. Just because it is a busy life.

Hm, I guess I shouldn't have assumed there was only one pedestrian answer.

Man, I don't care if you were evading taxes constantly because you were too lazy to keep track of how full your tank was, I was just making a joke.

Practically speaking there's probably not much difference, admittedly. But either group would probably be offended at being mislabeled.

Yeah. I just decided to ruin the joke with a practical answer. That's the way I roll. ;)

I was mostly single while I drove it ... and then I hooked up with the secretary and got a company car ...

@Polygeekery said in First Cars Thread:
My vehicle goes 330 miles on a tank.
I get rather more than that (I can go down to my brother's place and back while driving around a while down there without filling up, so that's probably in the 400–500 mile range) and it's definitely a vehicle optimised for comfort. I suppose I could get more if I turned the AC off, but I like having it in dehumidify mode so there's that. Diesels have nice natural fuel efficiency. ;)
-
My first car is my actual car.
It is pretty good as a first car goes.
Had 3 problems so far.
- Worn tyres (I didn't know how to check for worn tyres)
- Worn pads (again I have no idea until I needed them)
- Coolant leaks (I checked for obvious leaks under the car but it was very slow).
4k car cost me 5.5k in repairs etc.
It could be worse. I had the car serviced by a friend and he says there is almost no rust even the car is over 9 years old and is in a Rainy part of the UK.

This is about right (including color), though I think mine was an 86, not an 89:

Noooooo ... the secretary ... administrative woman ... whatever ... It needs some maintenance now and again but overall it's a great ride even after 10+ years.
-
My first car was my great grandmother's (on my Dad's side, not the one who recently passed. I think she passed when I was three ish because I only have like one memory of her). '88 Chevy Cavalier. From what I know, she never took it on the highway. It had sat in a carport for like 12 years after she passed. AFAIK, just needed new tires, new battery, and an oil change and she fired right up. Actually got pretty great mileage, even if I had to push it to go highway speeds. Got myself T-boned on Labor Day my Freshman year of College. Parents got the door replaced and then I wrecked it in 2013 after making a bad assumption.
First purchased was an '06 Altima that I'm convinced I still overpaid for, but it was my first time buying a car. Still got it for $1,300 off the internet price, but I think it was still ~$1.5k more than it was actually worth. It'll probably go to my brother assuming he gets his grades up so he can actually get a license. No ABS in an '06 though

Shame on you! Objectifying women like that! She needs maintenance but is still a great ride, not it.
You sexist swine. I'm ashamed to call you my best friend now!
