living by Windows Updates makes their lives worse
Well, I'm not constantly frustrated by having my files that I left open overnight closed on me, or having windows reboot during a meeting when I was running the projector. If missing out on that is making my life "worse", I'm ok with "worse".

@lucas1 said in The Official Status Thread:
@boomzilla Surely Windows updates being automatic and bad in that statement proves why it is better to "drive stick" :D
I will accept this when my transmission restarts the engine while at speed on the highway.

It's the same. They moved it out of Office and into Windows because it's the killer app for touch devices. Really. It's fucking great.
I don't have a touch device. Where the hell is it on the menu--I can't find it?
-
@FrostCat I have one bowl and a plate for scrambled eggs in the morning and a knife and a fork to wash. It takes like less than 2 minutes to wash that after I've eaten my brekkie. Why would I leave dirty china around when I can just clean it there and then and put in back clean in the cupboard straight away.

Take it up with Microsoft, not me.

the rationale behind it.
If you don't believe me, you can go look yourself for corroboration. I'm repeating what I've read.

Let me know how this works out for you.
You want me to let you know how something I told you do to works out for me? Truly, you have a dizzying intellect. TDEMSYR.

That's fine, but it's not a rationale. You're confusing "what" with "why" is all I'm saying.
-
@FrostCat said in The Official Status Thread:

The words I wrote said that, for sure, blakey.
-
live in Sussex, I just didn't want to put it in Sussex because Sussex doesn't feel quite classy enough
Go to Southampton on a Friday night mate, there is no class there. You should do North Dorset, Somerset (pronouced SOMMMERSET) or maybe Northern Devon, Wiltshire etc. Hampshire is like not posh it is full of cackers mate.
I'm sorry I didn't stop to consider your wisdom again, though if I had wanted advice on the subject, I would have asked for advice, rather than merely stopping to observe that I was doing my own research and it seemed slightly weird.
It was an off the cuff comment because I live there. And I realise you being facetious with this statement.

Impossible. Literally everything is a touch device now. Anything that isn't a touch device is OUTDATED and has already been THROWN AWAY. They never existed. It's always been touch devices.

That's every week or so. Well, for the fast ring. (There's already been 2 since the Anniversary update)

Or get a Subaru... (well for those few models that still have a manual option. sigh.)

@FrostCat said in The Official Status Thread:
Go ahead and try to find an installer for the version of OneNote that ships with Windows 10. I'll wait (although I'll be doing other stuff.)
Yeah, since Store apps don't have installers, that will be a problem...
-
@FrostCat said in The Official Status Thread:
Unless there's not actually a version of OneNote that comes with Windows? Now I'm not sure, because I do have the version that comes with Office.
There are 2 versions - the store version and the standalone one.

Touch devices are great. Sucks when most but not all of your machines are. (Why isn't a tap working - oh fuck, wrong machine. Or, oh fuck, I'm on the Mac)

You can just "apt-get install OneNote"
Oh, right, Windows doesn't have a package management worth shit. Never mind
Well, they don't have one because every fucking time they try to create one someone prophesizes the downfall of civilization due to the monopoly of Windows or something.

Not sure what excuse you're trying to come up with here.
Maybe they should start by creating a Visual Studio installer that works reliably and doesn't take 4~5 hours to install.

Not an excuse. http://www.theverge.com/2016/7/27/12294708/tim-sweeney-microsoft-windows-10-uwp-steam
And that's for the Windows Store which not many people use.
Imagine the dire tidings which a properly working solution would entice.

"Microsoft figured it would be less work for users to put all the files on your hard drive when you install Windows, so that you don't have to worry about losing your install media". If you don't think that's a rationale, I'm not sure what else to tell you.

I can touch my computer's screen, but nothing happens except the LCDs flicker.
I found it, anyway. It was under "O" for "OneNote". I thought it'd be under M for Microsoft OneNote, or maybe under the Windows Accessories group.

I've only seen 2. RTM was 14393, then 14901 and I'm on 14905 now.
-
@dcon No, the original RTM, a year ago. I think the average was "a little longer than every other week". But it wasn't a steady cadence, there were varying intervals.
The nice thing is you can now set the "business hours" or whatever it's called so it'll reboot after you go home for the day. It'll even warn you, possibly not if you're @mott555, that it wants to reboot after hours, so you can quit out of all your apps and not lose your work.

A properly working solution would let you add sources other than Micro-Soft.
Like Debian's package manager and yum.I don't see what people would complain about in that case.

Here's my mental overhead when using an automatic:
Coming up to a stop. Don't look for a clutch. Don't look for a clutch. Hey, left foot, what are you doing? Stop it...it's not there...dammit, foot! Don't do that! It doesn't do anything! Okay, now try to push the brake...quit it, left foot, there's no clutch! Come on, right foot, you can do it, you can brake to a stop without the left foot going first...crap! Just ran the light...what's that siren-y noise behind me?

They still would. Because of reality distortion field - I mean, Sweeney complained about not being able to sideload several months after MS had enabled sideloading as a default.

Oh THAT - I was thinking the Anniversary RTM... Yeah, I've seen intervals up to at least a month. Others as short as a day or two. The closer they got to the refresh, the faster they came. (I'm eagerly awaiting a new build next week that's supposed to fix a Centennial issue)

I've never bought a new car. Am considering leasing one this year.
The big benefit is that you can get it with exactly the extras that you want, and there's a lot of really nice things on the very recent models as they start to incorporate stuff from the self-driving car research. These things haven't filtered down so much into the second-hand market yet, and in any case, when you buy second-hand, you're buying someone else's choicesβ¦

They already did since about, oh, Win3.0?
It's called an "Installer" and it lets you do about anything you'd like. No one is preventing you from adding a store.

Somerset
The part of Somerset near Dorset isn't particularly posh. It's through the Chilterns where the serious poshness is found (unless you get into a large estate, in which case you can find those dotted all over the place, sometimes discreet and sometimes not).

I did that once, too--nearly had a heart attack. It looks like modern transmissions will just refuse to engage when you do that.
