Old shit music you like

I really like this because me and my girlfriend at the time used to listen to this while playing GTA3.

It reminds me of fun times, when I thought nose piercing were sexy.

-
@lucas1 I love this song. I do it for karaoke. If I share with husband I do the rap and he does the singing. I like the singing parts so I will do them to do the song alone.
-
Chop Suey. I think, similar to In the End, it gives me some nostalgia about my teenage angst.
-
Rob Zombie:

Confession: I still pretty much like this shit.

Nose-picking is still sexy.

Yeah, his stuff is good. I'm assuming that "old shit music you like" translated from the original Cunt is basically the same as "guilty pleasure," in which spirit I offer this:
-
@boomzilla I like that shot where the dancers holding the glowing globes are doing the pee-pee dance around 3:35.
-
@blakeyrat I prefer watching Belinda Carlisle, but just for you:
Also: I don't feel guilty for liking Joan Jett.

The first song I remember liking as a kid, about 4-5 years old I think. I wasn't able to find out when this version was published exactly, but I think it was old when I first heard it, in a diner, with my Dad and someone he was meeting on business.
(The song was written in 1929. What I remember hearing was definitely not the Rooftop Singers version of 1962; there's a variation that is quite obvious. The Music City Singers version above is consistent with what I remember.)
I think that was also the first time I saw one of these:
-
Yeah, fuck it. I like Evanescence.

No! Now get off my lawn. I still struggling with the idea that some people say 80s music is old.
-
@Gurth My wife teaches grade school. Anything older than 2010 to her students is considered "old." She had a real reality check when she mentioned, I think, Nickelback to her kids and they either didn't know who they were or the ones who did called it old man music.
I consider the music of my generation to be anywhere between 1992 and 2000 with a peak in 1997. I know Chop Suey and In the End came a few years after that time, but I still enjoyed it as a freshman in college.
Edit: Also, if we're talking about old music the way you're talking about it, then "old shit music" is largely an oxymoron. I mean, anything from the classic rock era is pure gold, IMO, with only a few exceptions.

Bullshit. Old stuff is only good due to selection bias. All of those aquaducts the Romans built and FELL DOWN INTO RUBBLE? Nobody takes bus tours to them. All those shitty portraits from the 17th century? Ain't none of them hanging in museums. All those crappy songs from the "classic rock era?" Never ended up reprinted on CDs.
There's no reason to believe the average quality of anything from a past era is any better than the average quality of that thing now.
-
@blakeyrat said in Old shit music you like:

But our modern bias isn't the same as the original one. Van Gogh didn't receive any recognition at his time. Those aquaducts are only admired because they are the ones that are standing not because they are the best or the nicest.
-
@Luhmann Ray Bradbury wrote a short story (in his Driving Blind collection, I believe) about a man who invented a time machine and uses it solely for going back in time to tell artists whose work was unappreciated in their own time that it'd be appreciated in the future just before they pass away. IIRC in the specific story he's going to find Herman Melville. It was an incredibly touching and amazing story that I had stuck in my mind for years and years.
The reboot Doctor Who does a shitty and awful version of that with Van Gogh in an episode that was dumb and moron.

Some years ago a guy I had to work with called some â90s hiphop (as I recall, Blackstreet) âold skool.â The only thing I could say was, âOld skool? Itâs not like youâre talking about the Sugar Hill Gang âŚâ

Iâm with @blakeyrat on that one: all you hear now is whatâs considered good nowadays, and by far all that was around back then. I bet that if you walk into a second-hand store (not necessarily a second-hand record store) and buy some random rock albums from the â60s and â70s by people you donât know, chances are you might not like what you hear, on average.

Leila of WtfCorp fame and I have been on a multi year "bands from the late 90s and early 2000s that are actually kinda shitty but why the hell not" concert bender. Helps that we have a suitable venue a few blocks from work.
Notable recent show: Ten Years.
https://youtu.be/OPXUeeFXc90
The encore was, I am not fucking kidding you, a vocalist solo. Not one of the hits. A whiny vocal solo.
We usually have our escape timed very well so we can get out of the damn parking garage ASAP. Last few lines of the encore song and we'll basically turn and run.
This time we were... You know, assuming there would be something real happening. And then the house lights came up and roadies started tearing down.
We still got out first because everyone else was even more hopelessly confused.
Upcoming show: Slipknot and Marilyn Manson.
Manson is supposedly a godawful drug addled middle-aged trainwreck. It's an outdoor pavilion show in high summer (we weren't dumb and got seats up close under cover, so that's not our worry). It's gonna be BAD.
-
@The_Quiet_One Yeah but children call literally anything that they haven't heard before "old". And nowadays the only thing children watch is youtubers playing Minecraft, so anything other than that is for old people.

@blakeyrat said in Old shit music you like:
Bullshit. Old stuff is only good due to selection bias.
My point was made mostly tongue in cheek, but I will say that, at least in my totally subjective and unverifiable opinion, when I compare the "selected good stuff" from today's music to the "selected good stuff" from prior decades, I see a serious decline in quality.
Listening to today's top-40, I hear, at best, two songs a year that are actually enjoyable, or at least tolerable. In prior generations, the enjoyable-to-tolerable-song-per-year rate was far, far higher. And before you make the tired point that what we selected to be good 60s and 70s music today was not top-40 back then, that's true for groups like Pink Floyd and ZZ Top. But there were still a ton of "pop" music from then that's comparable in contemporary radio distribution that were still far better than today's Anaconda et al.
-
@NedFodder I'm fairly certain we saw them somewhere in there.

I have the distinct feeling I'm the oldest person here, so it took me a while to find something from my era that's both "shit" and what I "like". Finally settled on this classic, with the worst electric piano solo ever, immediately followed by the worst guitar solo ever:
-
There's this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xat1GVnl8-kAlthough this remix off the EU/Australia single is superior in its rank awful badassness (like everything else KMFDM's name has ever been attached to) and may actually be the greatest thing I ever stole on Napster at sub-56k*

Side note: BHG also has what should damned well be the Pennsylvania state song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vl3jK8NCLFcAt least, Eastern PA. It doesn't quite perfectly represent Central PA (where I hang out) and ain't nobody in Western PA can identify with it in any way, but they don't get a vote per standard PA politics. They're lucky they're allowed to have the Steelers.
Here's an explanation of the bizarre Pennsylvania regional structure:
Eastern PA is basically "suburban Philadelphia" and "outlying New York City" and pretends it's the only part of PA that exists.
Western PA is generally Pittsburgh and the surrounding outlying areas and pretends it's the only part of PA that exists.
Central PA is where the capitol, Harrisburg, is. It's a complete shithole and is where the term Pennsyltucky comes from. Nobody here gives a shit about anything in Eastern or Western PA with the exception of allegiance to either NFL or MLB team (Baltimore is also a popular choice because fuck the Iggles and Steelies.). Naturally, this is where I spend all my time. I have better taste than to live there, however - I drive the fuck out of state to sleep.
Northern PA is empty.
Everybody forgets all about Erie and nobody cares.

@Tsaukpaetra I see you're unfamiliar with the core schtick of the song.

I once dated a girl for a few months who had an unhealthy obsession with Chester Bennington. I seriously cannot hear Linkin Park without thinking of her.

If we are talking about shit music that is still fun to listen to, I nominate Limp Bizkit. It really doesn't get more shit than that, while still being fun to listen to as a guilty pleasure.

I swear to god, every one of their videos starts with 30 seconds of utter bullshit.
Except this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpUYjpKg9KY
Funny story: I had a person that I will loosely refer to as a used-to-be friend who got the douchebag tattoo of this:
This was nearly 20 years ago. I have to imagine it is now as embarrassing as a male tramp stamp. Fuck, he was an idiot.
I have to wonder where Fred Durst is at now. I would not be surprised if there was a "Where are they now?" special about Limp Bizkit and Fred Durst is now head line cook at a Carl's Jr. in Encinitas. Or jerking off truck drivers for $25 a pop. Neither would surprise me really.
Significantly less shit, I still enjoy Metallica's Load and Reload albums. I fired them up on Spotify the other night, until the wife came home and told me to turn that shit off because she had a headache.
