Internet of Things. Fuckwitted stupidity like 'net-enabled lightbulbs.
Being able to shut off the kitchen light without getting up to do it was my christmas present to my parents last year.
You can just install a auto-off time-switch that will switch off the lights after 1am, though.

I bought some 60Ws just a couple of years ago that would come on at about half-brightness for a second or so, then jump to about 80-90% and take "a little while" longer to get to full brightness
I have one in my bathroom that starts quite dim and takes several minutes to get up to full. It's actually nice to have that in the middle of the night.

@Steve_The_Cynic Here's a 189mm R7S LED. Dunno if it'll fit, though: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CQBJ4H0?psc=1 Looks like it might not be 300W-equiv, though, because it says 15W, and earlier links said 30?
No way it will fit, I think, but thanks.

the place where I buy light bulbs is the same hypermarket where I buy my food
Well, there's your problem. You might have to go to an actual hardware store to get sufficiently bright LEDs.

@Steve_The_Cynic said in New vector of hacking attacks - lightbulbs...:
All fluorescents: break one ==> mercury spill, weird colour spectrum.
Also, flipping them on and off all the time shortens their life span. LEDs don't have that problem.
-
@lolwhat so what you do when they hang or get too slow?

@masonwheeler lightbulbs with network connection is our present.
...but WHY? what's the point? do they send me an email notifying me their lifetime is nearing end? do they chat with me on messenger when they notice I'm lonely? will they order me a pizza when they hear my stomach making empty sounds?
WHYYYYY, OH GOD, OH GOD, WHYYYYYY?
...oh, are they streaming sounds directly to NSA?

@Fox Clap On/Clap Off?
Long time ago, somewhere on internet I found a story where someone move to new house. He didn't take all their stuff yet, so had to connect his XBox to such clap-on extension cord. He was playing Call of Duty without headphones, and the cord recognized grenade explosions as clapping...
...and it got triggered and asked the grenades to be considerate and use jazz hands instead?

But incandescents do have that problem(1), so that's an actual advantage of LEDs.
(1) Repeatedly heating the filament beyond 3000 Kelvin and then cooling it off again causes fatigue-inducing flexing of the metal (which is weakened at high temperatures, as all metals are, although the definition of "high" varies by the metal). I read somewhere that operating an incandescent for a while in one orientation, then putting it in a different fixture, so that it is a different way up, is a good way to shorten its lifespan a lot.

Fuck. That. Shit. Actual hardware stores are all in really inconvenient locations(1). I don't care enough about it to want to trek all that way.
(1) The one just across the street from your house is in a really inconvenient location for me.

driving through France I always get the idea there is a leroy merlin or similar at every other corner.

Dumb shit like that one episode of Big Bang Theory. "Ooooh, some guy in China's turning my light on and off."
I suppose you could turn the lights on from your phone before you get home or something.
-
@FrostCat I know a guy with lights that he can change the colour of from his ipad. I still see no point

Man, what wasteland do you live in? I have 184 Walmarts within a half mile of where I'm sitting right now, not to mention 3 actual big box hardware stores within probably 5 miles.

Mood lighting for when that "special someone" comes to visit.

well changing the colour of the light is cheaper than constantly redecorating to change teh colour of the wall and furniature i guess

Sorry to disappoint, but I don't think Terraria is real.

@accalia it also means he can switch from blue alert to red alert without changing the bulb

@anotherusername Very nice. Much @r10pez10. Now, my friend, let me introduce you to the concept of hyperbole.
I think what I actually have is 4--maybe 5--within about 20 minutes' drive.

One place I used to live had the only Walmart within at least a 2 hours drive, depending on the direction. East was 2 hrs. to the next Wally World, west was about 2.5 to the next Mall Wart, north was about 3 or 4 hrs., and south was... 8? Not really much of anything in that direction.
Filed under: Now guess where that was.

Antarctica?
-
@FrostCat in my case there are like 2 dozen and I've somehow managed to live smack dab in the middle of where there aren't any. There's a Walmart in just about any conceivable direction, but they're nearly all 20-35 minutes away.

Your clap have to be loud enough... or you have to remember how many claps is required to turn off the lights in kitchen from bedroom. :P

It's that word "driving" that's the main issue. If I had a car, sure, I could easily go to Leroy Merlin or Bricorama or Castorama, but I don't have a car. There is a Castorama sort of near a Lille Metro station, but I don't live near a station on that Metro line.
