Urethrovaginal fistula? Though if you end up with both this and kidney stones, someone up there must really hate your guts.

that my doctor might suddenly decide I'm pregnant right shortly after asking the first time is a sign of distrust and possibly antagonism.
Yes. That happens to women. A lot.
Once again, on the behalf of everyone born male, I would like to apologize to the entire female population for creating a medical system that treats femininity as pathological.
That having been said, doctors are taught to approach all patients with a certain skepticism, because patients often lie, often misinterpret their symptoms, and often either downplay the amount of discomfort they are experiencing to avoid being a nuisance, or exaggerate it for attention.
I am guessing that if you had been a male with a broken leg, they would have pestered you about how much pain relief you needed, instead, because that's the bias they would likely have had in that case (i.e., that men see it as unmanly to admit that they are in pain, which to be fair many do). It still sucks that you are catching so much shit just for being female, though.

I wonder what little tidbit of knowledge has been pushed out to make space back when my brain decided "fistula" is a word I should remember for my entire life.

@error I wish I wouldn't have known what he was talking about, then at least I would have had the opportunity not to google it.

@ScholRLEA they're probably also jaded... find a nurse and ask about their horror stories of women who turned up pregnant who had no fucking clue how reproduction works.

YOU DIDN'T BUILD THAT!

@anotherusername Oh, I know that part; a cousin of mine found out she was pregnant 8 months in, and even then only because she had a minor injury that was being treated in the ER. She wasn't ignorant about the topic, but she had no indications up to that point, not even a little weight gain (and a lot of weight gain is more typical).
Hell, there's a regular series on TLC called I Didn't Know I was Pregnant, and a lot of them didn't know how they got pregnant, because they didn't realize that that was what could happen when you put tab A into slot B.
Mind you, most of them did know how babies are made, and many had had children before, but it's still pretty amazing how something that significant could be completely overlooked.
I imagine that the irritating part is less that they are asking, but that they are asking even when it seems completely irrelevant to the problem being treated (though see my cousin's story above), and worse, they keep repeating the question after they administered the test themselves, as @Yamikuronue described. The only explanation I can come up with is CYA, because if you mess up with something like that it would be an almost certain lawsuit.
-
@ScholRLEA I do think it is a CYA thing. Because some people sue over everything even if it were their own fault.

I am still croggled by how many women - including several who were adults in their twenties or even thirties - were completely unaware of how human reproduction works. That part blows my fucking mind.
My parents taught me the birds and the bees when I was fucking eight, which in hindsight was probably a couple of years too early but it was the Seventies. Most high schools teach at least something resembling basic reproduction in health courses, even in states where sex ed has been replaced with teaching abstinence. Hell, they should have learned this just from hearing dirty jokes, or from other women talking about their own lives. That someone who has an IQ above room temperature (in Celsius) could reach the age of 30 without learning that putting the pee-pee in the vajayjay could lead to a baby is astonishing.
No, it isn't common, but that it happens at all is sheer cracksmokery.

Whether it's at all appropriate to ever talk about reproduction around women is very cultural, and there's swaths of the US where the dominant subculture does not allow that.

i find myself wondering what the correlation of the prevalance of that subculture and the localities where abstenance only education (which, btw, doesn't work. it's scientifically proven) is taught.
i'd bet at least a coupla sawbucks that the correlations damn strong. strong like ox.

I imagine the main reason the question in the first couple posts comes up so much is that it affects what sort of treatment they can give you.

Are you pregnant?

Would you like to be?Would you like to be able to walk upright? Or would you prefer to be curled up in a tight ball of pain around your scrotum which contains what once was your testes and now is pulverized mush?
