Why is it "disgusting" to drink breast milk?

@FrostCat said in Why is it "disgusting" to drink breast milk?:
When my wife was pregnant with our first child, the doctor said "when your kid comes home with a friend and offers a snack, that's when it's time to quit breastfeeding".
I believe I've seen a variation that "when your baby starts to crawl everywhere, that's when it's time to quit breastfeeding".
I think it makes sense that "be breastfeed" is not convenient when the baby need to explore the world.

My primary doc said when her kids started lifting her shirt she was done.

Current advice from the WHO is exclusive for 6 months, and continuing until at least 2 years. It promotes bonding and confers immunity via antibodies.

Humans and bodily fluids are super weird.
For example, scientists do this experiment a lot.
- Swallow your spit please.
- Drink some water from this cup please.
- Spit into this cup please.
- Drink from the spitcup.
Why is step 4 gross? The cup is clean. Your spit is clean. Once your fluids leave your 'self' they become gross, for more or less mysterious reasons.
I must be weird. I didn't skip a beat until you pointed it out. Still doesn't bother me unless you say it was someone else's spit....

There's probably something wrong with me.
I would have no problem at all with drinking breast milk (as long as I can be reasonably sure the donor is healthy, same as with cow milk). I'm even curious to try it. I remember a specific taste from my early childhood, which I assume to be breast milk and I want to find out if that's true.

Long term memories don't develop until around 3 years old. If you were breast fed that long you may remember it, otherwise it's probably Sunny D or something

For conscious memories, you're right, but iirc, things like sounds, smells, feelings can sometimes be remembered from before that. Normally you can't consciously access them at all, they just provoke an involuntary response when you encounter them again.
And it certainly wasn't sunny D. The taste is like milk but different and slightly sweeter, so it fits the description of breast milk. I'm quite sure it's either that or some baby milk formula.

@russ0519 said in Why is it "disgusting" to drink breast milk?:
I think there are several reasons that it's disgusting.
- It doesn't really taste that good. Kind of bland.
- It's not pasteurized, so you don't know what viruses/bacteria are in it. Cow milk can be pretty deadly if it hasn't been pasteurized. Raw milk is illegal in most states, and in those where it's legal, they have to keep testing it to make sure that it doesn't have any bad stuff in it.
- If you don't know the source of the breast milk and the fact that it's not pasteurized, I wouldn't be surprised if you could catch some STD that way.
@bb36e said in Why is it "disgusting" to drink breast milk?:
@russ0519 how about:
- It comes from people.
We're getting to that oral sex argument again, aren't we? (probably NSFW for most, and probably NSFL for some...)
Totally unscientific polls suggests a not insignificant minority of women and men (NSFW both links, naturally) who give oral sex to with men would swallow.
Online polls, and the associated arguments about accuracy of the numbers apply, of course, but still...
Didn't bother looking for numbers the other way with those giving oral sex to a woman while she was menstruating.

saliva probably wasn't sanitary to begin with
You produce and swallow saliva all day long. It had damned well better be sanitary!
-
@FrostCat Your nose also produces 1 liter of mucus every day, most of which you swallow. #disgustingbodyfacts
-
@asdf People also find it disgusting to eat bogeys, yet exactly the same happens when you snuffle hard enough.
-
@ChrisH this isn't the thread about Stallman

Who said disgust had to be rational?

Yes, but most people also find it disgusting if you snuffle audibly.

Well, not quite. If you suck your mucus and boogers down the back of your nose, they go straight down your gullet.
If you pick at a booger and eat it, you actually TASTE it, and each one has a UNIQUE flavor. Don't waste your boogers by sucking them down the back of your nose. Enjoy the flavors!

For some reason this made me think of Skittles...

Well, the purple ones do taste nasty. Probably not like boogers, though, but still... ugh. (The rest of them are yummy enough to make up for it though.)

I believe I've seen a variation that "when your baby starts to crawl everywhere, that's when it's time to quit breastfeeding".
Somewhat more applicable to third-world areas than first-world, but the WHO recommends breastfeeding for at least two years, IIRC, for several reasons. It's far more sanitary than formula in areas where the water is of questionable quality. It's far less expensive than formula everywhere. It tends to lower the birth rate, as it lowers a woman's fertility somewhat, which is useful in areas where people are not able to support large families and more reliable birth control is not readily available, or not used for religious reasons, or whatever.
Edit:
-
I wasn't going to post this joke but as grandmothers have been mentioned...
Very eeeew joke
A guy walks into a whorehouse and asks for the best whore they have. The madam tells him the only whore she has left is a grandmother. He thinks about it for a moment and says OK . They start fucking and he starts sucking her tits and was surprised to get some milk out but kept on sucking and fucking. When he was done he said, "I thought you would be too old to have breast milk!" She said, "I am, but not too old to have breast cancer."

Edit:
You have to be exclusively breast feeding and in the western world don't count on it past 6 months. It probably has more effect in the developing world where the mother likely doesn't have optimal nutrition.
-
@HardwareGeek said in Why is it "disgusting" to drink breast milk?:
It may work for the occasional individual, but for a species, it's a short road to extinction.
Ahem...
I wouldn't mention this to a lesser .
-
@boomzilla said in Why is it "disgusting" to drink breast milk?:
Ahem...
I was aware of brood parasitism, but not of any mammals that exhibit the phenomenon. And, fwiw, the Wikipedia article you linked says it doesn't occur among mammals*. Therefore, brood parasitism is irrelevant to the immediate topic of other species' milk.
The strategy appears among birds, insects and some fish.
* Technically, it doesn't actually say this, but it's strongly implied by the fact that mammals are not included in the (exhaustive?) list of animals among which it occurs.
-
@Karla said in Why is it "disgusting" to drink breast milk?:
You have to be exclusively breast feeding
There may be some effect with lower levels of breastfeeding, but it's not even close to reliable contraception unless the baby is basically being carried on the breast and nursing whenever it wants.
-
@Jaloopa said in Why is it "disgusting" to drink breast milk?:

I don't think anybody has ever claimed it was reliable contraception, but if it reduces fertility by even, say, 20% it can be useful in regions where the population exceeds the capacity of the environment.
-
@HardwareGeek said in Why is it "disgusting" to drink breast milk?:

You'd be surprised. I've heard of people surprised they got pregnant while still breast feeding, sometimes when the baby is also on solids and/or formula
-
@Jaloopa said in Why is it "disgusting" to drink breast milk?:

By lack of knowledge, understanding, and wisdom? As old and cynical as I am, you'd think not, but yes, sometimes I am.

No, that doesn't surprise me.
-
@HardwareGeek said in Why is it "disgusting" to drink breast milk?:

It's long been known among people who don't have access to reliable contraception. Making excuses to delay weaning is the "I have a headache" of pregnancy.

@ScholRLEA those things aren't human, so it's not human breast milk.
Also, I fail to get that second one. It just looks like he used some expired milk, 1 day after it expired. Which in reality would probably be fine at that point, but I digress.

I think they're switching recommendations here to 'use your nose'.
Except for, IIRC, chicken, which should be tossed immediately.

Yes, but TruFacts are a to . Or something.
The character assumed and reacted in a manner consistent with the main complaint of the OP.

@Tsaukpaetra The fact that Tedd is Elliot's best friend, and norm... uh, usuall... no... er, frequently male may be part of it, too.

The double meaning is why they used the phrase:
"Turn your gaze to this device, all of you mothers out there!" (what they meant)
vs
"Check this out, my own female parent!" (what people will initially think they said)It's more memorable because of the double-take, and because it's more memorable, it's better advertising.
