My phone keeps bitching at me that its internal storage is almost full...
Apparently, 3.24 + 0.1 = 5.00.
-
Plus the 91 MB of "other", plus the OS space taken up...
-
@e4tmyl33t The space taken up by the OS is accounted for in another screen.
Bonus: I'm trying to transfer files from the "internal storage" to a computer via USB cable. Only a few files are visible in the file explorer and if I try to copy them the transfer just stops midway without any error messages.

You complain! I barely have 3Gb for crap!
I literally can't install much more than updates for system Apps and a few user Apps before Android is like, "um, you have less than 400mb free, I can't possibly update Apps now!"
-
Man am I glad phones don't come with SD card slots anymore
-
@Tsaukpaetra Yeah, my parents had a phone with about the same space and it became clear very quickly that you can't actually install any apps there.
If only Android could actually store most of its shit in the SD card.

Well with Android 6.0 most phones can use the External SD as Internal, but since they don't let you specify size you could very easily waste your nice 128 Gb SD card to apps. Because why would you want to partition your SD card to give a few gigs for internal apps and let the rest of it act like a typical SD card?
-
@Tsaukpaetra i've installed shit all for apps and i have no idea how i can possibly be using 20GB of apps
let's see here..... other than the stock apps i have..... Audible, with one audiobook downloaded.... Google authenticator.....lastpass, and..... nope. that's it.
no idea where the 21GB came from.
Edit: oh, and slack.... forgot slack.
-
@accalia If you click through to apps it'll show how much space each one is taking up.
My uneducated guess is maybe Slack is caching 13 GB of animated emojifs

oh...... apparently i had downloaded a lot of music in google play music..... delete it!
....now i have 8GB used.
-
@accalia I would have expected Google Play Music to store it somewhere in a generic location where it would get picked up in the Audio category, but maybe for raisins it wants to keep the files in its own data.

I assume it's probably because the albums i had downloaded were accessed via all access and thus i had not purchased the album outright (and in fact can't figure out how to do so without dropping all access) and so the music was encrypted just in case i dropped all access?
either that or some other real reason.

How old are these Android devices that have single digit GBs of internal storage?? It has been a long ass time since we have had one with less than 16GB.

i've long never bothered about the storage capacity, because it's a freaking phone. games that drain the battery so your cellphone, the phone that you use for emergenies, can't be used to make a flipping emergency call do not belong on a phone. same with videos too.
following that rule i have no problems with data storage (the music i had downloaded was almost certainly for a field trip i chaperoned so i could listen to tunes in the car on the way to/from without worrying about spotty reception, and it was the car so the phone would be plugged in anyway to prevent battery drain thanks to GPS)

If you navigate to the album via the search function and go into the three-dots menu on the right-hand side one of the options should be "Buy".
I've got all-access and just double-checked and it's there for me.

My phone has 16 Gb internal storage. It's the partitioning that's FUBAR. Essentially, the makers wanted this phone to be more of a camera than anything, so they gave 9.5 Gb to "Internal SD", and 3 Gb to "Internal storage".
Because of this idiocy, people have had to try various hacks such as enabling LVM and something called Unified Storage, which kinda work but require specially compiled kernels to work right.

Is that why my phone is capable of utilizing a 2TB SD?

You can get a breakdown of how much each app is using from the Apps setting.
-
@hungrier I told Play Music to download 3GB of music to the SD card, and somehow now it's using 1.3 GB in internal storage. What the hell?

Lolcache perhaps? Internal download manager probably tripped itself...

Last year's Moto E and G came with 8GB internal. (Yes, you can get the G with 16GB, but only unlocked directly from Motorola for some reason.)

My phone loves to move some apps from the SD card to internal storage when it updates them and then starts complaining that there's not enough space to download updates.
When I try to move the apps back to the SD card, it sometimes complains that there's not enough free space for that, either ( ? TDEMSYR! ), and I'm forced to uninstall one or two apps before fixing the rest.
-
@asdf said in More Android bullshit:

I noticed this too ... this is stupid ...
-
@Luhmann
There appears to be three sorts of storage. One which is typically minuscule (because asshat manufacturer configurations) and which all the apps compete to be located in, and where you're largely locked out of it unless you root the phone. Also, some applications insist on writing lots of data in that space as well. And it's also where they log to, and write crash dumps to, and so on. And I'm not convinced that even deleting apps clears it out correctly. So it's filled up with shit, much of which you don't care about as a non-developer of apps for the device, and you can't do anything much about it easily. So yes, big WTFs in this area.
-
@Tsaukpaetra If it's a bug, it happens every time.
My first guess was that for each song it was keeping some crypto certificate bullshit that's half the size of the song. Looking a bit more into it, I saw that the music are raw mp3 files (SDcard/Android/data/com.google.android.music/files/music), but they don't add up to the size, so I thought maybe it was placing half of them in internal storage for some crazy reason, but they still don't add up to the number Play Music claims to have.
The SD card is formatted as "internal" (still shows as separate storage, not sure what the point is). After copying some stuff, I investigated a bit more:
-
Windows explorer says there's 4.82 GB used in the SD card
-
But the files I can see only add to 1.51 GB
-
Trying to copy the file WhatsApp/databases/msgstore-2016-07-12.1.db.crypt12 to the computer results in "unspecified error". Every other file works fine. I deleted it just in case.
-
Android storage settings says there's 4.34 GB used
-
But the stuff listed (Apps, Images, Other), again, adds up to 1.5 GB
-
Using a file manager app lists, again, the total size as 4.34 GB
-
But the individual folders add up to... 2.74 GB? That's a new number.
(Conclusion: there's probably hidden files in there that I'm not allowed to see)
- Google Play Music claims to have 3.1 GB of music there
- The com.google.android.music folder only shows as 1.17 GB in the file manager, and shows as empty in the PC (confirming the hidden files hypothesis)
- Settings app says it's using 1.18 GB of internal storage (which is almost the same number as before, but I was definitely browsing the SD card). No way to browse that.

@anonymous234 Welcome to the wonderful world of DRM.

Android bit me yesterday. It turned off my WiFi, and I ended up downloading 4 GB worth of Gear VR apps over the cell network before I got a text from my carrier saying I was over my 1 GB/month limit.
-
Not Android specifically, but a thing I figured out today: if Maps is being slow as molasses and losing GPS signal every 17 femtoseconds, delete the application cache. No, formatting the cache partition won't help (if you want to just do that from recovery), this cache is somewhere else. Remembered this since it probably aligns with @dkf's rant.

Most of my music is hand-ripped from CDs. The rest is bought from DRM-free online stores.

/shrug/
-
@Gurth I think the separation might be "Songs I own and have loaded on the phone" versus "Songs that the app has locally cached to help avoid playback interruptions on the move", since Play will background download the next X songs in your current playlist to your phone (and keep rolling that forward as they play through).
-
@Magus And now it works. Huh.
-
@anonymous234 said in More Android bullshit:

Yep. You'll also notice that your phone appears as a "portable media device", which means Android is actually translating your computer's requests to list/read/write files and folders and vetting them out to make sure you don't "mess anything up" on accident.
@Gurth said in More Android bullshit:

Yes, because it's being stored in the internal app storage partition, instead of the internal SD card partition. Yes it BS.

And not delete them after a while, it seems. Handy if you want to go far back through the playlist, I suppose, but otherwise?

I just love how when the client side detects that shit has happened at the connection level that the user can't do anything about, it throws the fact in the user's face and doesn't even attempt to reestablish the communications link. It's awesome usability, right there!
