Skype barely works; let's add new features
-
"The ability to respond to text messages received on your phone with the same app on your PC. It’s a reality for Mac users since 2014, and Windows 10 Mobile users were supposed to get the feature, called Messaging Everywhere, with the Anniversary Update rolling out August 2.
But that’s not happening anymore.
Instead, Microsoft thinks it has a better idea: add Messaging Everywhere to an upcoming version of Skype for Windows 10 PCs.
To sum up: Microsoft is dropping an anticipated feature that the company says was working great, in favor of adding it to Skype, a service that countless individuals have described as being in various states of brokenness for, well, a long time."
I guess they have to do something to justify the $8 Billion they spent for Skype.

I have that feature. It's called Hangouts / Google Voice with a Google Voice number.
-
I'm confused. I already possess the ability to text from my PC via Cortana on 10586.420 with my Android phone. Does Microsoft seriously not support the same functionality for Windows phone yet? Only for insiders for those few builds?
-
Microsoft put all their eggs in one basket with Skype, and are now proceeding to smash that basket.
-
Am I crazy? Didn't Skype have text messaging like... 7 years ago?
-
Skype will leak your address if you are not upgraded to Windows 10 so that
MormonsMSFT employees will come to your door and urge you to upgrade.
(Think I used this in another thread)
-
@blakeyrat maybe for a temporary number that Skype assigned to you. Not that synced with the text messages you received on your ordinary mobile number, I think.
-
@anotherusername Oh I guess that makes sense. So this is kind of like Google Voice but for Skype.
-
TIL there is people still using skype

I remember there is a term for this: Sunk-Cost Fallacy
-
We are the Microsoft. Lower your firewall and surrender your keys. We will add your texting and chatting distinctiveness to our own. Your apps will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile.

@WPT interesting link. Seems to be my corporations philosophy of choice.

You are right ... there are actually only 12 ... 13 is Favorites but that is automatically created

Well I guess that Microsoft messaging app didn't have ads, which made it less "useful" than Skype for Microsoft...
-
@darth_llama Wow, such a fresh and original joke. Comparing Microsoft to the Borg from Star Trek. You're a genius for making such a connection.
Hey-- have you thought about taking an image of Bill Gates and crudely photoshopping one of those Borg eyepieces? That might make the joke even better.

Don't get me started on when they decided it's a good idea to remove the ability of QR code scanning at search button because of Cortana, when roughly about 2 years later and I have even changed my phone once, Cortana is still not available in my region.
(No, for some unknown reason, I cannot find Bing Vision or the QR code reader for Cortana that available in Lumia 920. Have to rely on (free) 3rd party App to do QR code scanning.)
QR code scanning is so common that you'd expect it to be a built-in feature for a smartphone, but yet somehow Microsoft still think it's a good idea to remove it (It IS built-in feature for vanilla version of Lumia 920 and Amber update).

In the beginning, Skype was good.
Then Micro-Soft bought it.

No, before Microsoft bought it, Skype had multi-day outages about once a year or so. COMPLETE outages. That hasn't happened once since Microsoft bought it.
The client is maybe slightly worse, but the service is rock-solid.

That's a HUGE understatement. It's complete shit now.
Maybe they open-sourced it
but the service is rock-solid.
Thanks to supernodes on Linux. At least they did something right.

You can just cut the route to Microsoft Tag recognition without cutting the QR code one. I have no problem with that.
Btw, except my MCP wallet card, I can't remember seeing Microsoft Tag be used anywhere.

Tell you what, sight unseen, I'm going to call "bullshit" and google for "Skype outage multi-day" and see what happens.
...
okay so this outage from 2015: http://blogs.skype.com/2015/09/22/skype-outage-an-update-and-an-apology/
Some "heartbeat" sites.
Then a link back to this thread.
Fun.

Well, I think most Apps Ads (especially those in MTR station or on bus) offer QR code to the download location.
And in a garment company that I worked, they attached QR label to every item they sell in the trade exhibition. When people use the iPad there to scan it, it'll show basic information of the item like the size and color they offer, the country of production, and the recommanded selling price, etc. And then offer to scan their namecard so our staffs can contact them later to negotiate a deal.

I saw it on copies of USA Today a few years back. My general thought at the time? Probably that it was going to fail because it depended on getting colour printing right, and that's something that remains easily screwed up.
