@Yamikuronue I can't help but think that even if these practises are all bullshit, having a tantrum and refusing to put up with said bullshit and being generally uncooperative reeks of Generation Snowflake™©®

@bb36e It's like playing the Game of Thrones: you're damned if you do, dead if you don't.

And that's 100% fair! But if they give you detailed requirements, and you decline to estimate on principle because "estimates are bad" and "it'll be done when it's done", you're a grade-A entitled asshole.
Have you ever once gotten proper detailed requirements under a Scrum regime? Because I haven't. (If I ever had, it would have surely been such a memorable event that I would remember!)
I've been frustrated by people who talk like that guy far too much, so maybe I'm overly critical, but the point is that micromanagement isn't necessarily the point of agile. Transparency is the point of agile. And the fearmongering "this is just like government surveillance guys" attitude speaks to a juvenile understanding of what work is.
Because we've never had TDWTF stories on here about management who don't understand the difference between "appearing busy" and actually going through the process of productive development work...

The internet suggests that, though it might just be a case of a very vocal minority; millenials are the generation that grew up with modern computers and internet, they're more used to it so they're more likely to use these tools to broadcast their stupidity than previous generations.
IMHO I think it is because of the internet and the fragmentation of the media that we get this: people are more likely to stay within their comfort zones than get exposed to points of view or ideas different from theirs.
(Older Gen-Xer here.)
-
@slavdude Yeah, that definitely plays a role too. The fact that big internet companies (FB, Google) blatantly manipulate what people see probably doesn't help either.

Precisely. This is the thing that too many people fail to understand: stereotypes exist for a reason, and if they failed to serve their purpose, people wouldn't use them.

Dude, did you not read that article from the other thread?
"Whatever" is passive aggressive.
Don't be passive aggressive.
Which means, by the transitive theory of logic and stuff, be aggressive.

WHATEVER YOU WHINY DOUCHE-POKER
There, see? No more passive aggressiveness.

@Groaner said in Safe Space:
They ain't gonna get a detailed estimate until there are detailed requirements.
If there are substantial questions about the requirements, it gets kicked out of planning and to the product owners to go and figure out what they want. That's not much of a problem with estimates.
The problem with estimates is that, quite often, you simply don't know the system well enough to provide an answer with any kind of value. Usually you can guess based on similar problems you've dealt with, but every system is different - if "displaying a grid" means writing three lines of code to fetch a table from the database and two to hook the data to a pre-made control, it's fine. When it requires writing your grid control from scratch, the estimate baloons. When it requires hooking up to a particularly retarded grid control that makes you wish you could just write a new one from scratch because it would be 100 times easier, but you can't... well, you know.
And diving into a new project, or a part of the codebase you haven't worked with, you have no idea which of the three situations you'll be facing. (You can ask, but if the answer is "that grid control is super fast hot shit", bump your estimates up, you're probably talking to its' developer.). So the estimate can be anywhere between "an hour" and "two to four weeks and the company's yearly coffee supplies".
A rule of thumb is: if your team could ask the company's janitor and get an estimate that isn't significantly less valid than yours, don't even bother estimating. Throw a "?" card, say "we need to look into it" and move on, possibly carving out a few hours for an investigative task.
Or just ask the janitor. He costs less, he'll probably appreciate not having to scrub toilets for a few minutes, and he'll be just as useful on your Scrum planning session as you.

Your company must be very mean with its coffee. ;) If you work for somewhere even moderately large, there's no physical way to consume that much caffeine in four weeks without killing yourself. (I've scaled back these days…)

If you need a friend to get blathered with without the philosophical overtones. Sure!
I'm also available on weekdays to help bury bodies. No questions asked. If you want questions they cost alcohol.

I have. Although until I was halfway through no-one told me the proper requirements document existed and I thought all I had was the use-case document. Which was still about twenty times better than anything I ever got in my previous jobs.
