@boomzilla I take back what I said about the unread counter being wrong. It's frequently wrong on WTDWTF as well. So it's a separate issue from your changes.

And let's not forget "moble" mode...
In other news, I figured out how to keep the "new post, click to update" stuff from happening.
-
@NedFodder said in Ignoring a topic:

Possibly. Hmm...I wonder if that's a similar issue with it not filtering out ignored categories? The only filter I saw was for permissions. Definitely should filter on categories, too.
-
Alrighty! Fixed the weird menu thing, plus added filtering on pushing new post notifications based on ignored topics and categories (which was almost certainly one, if not the, issue with the "new topics" thing):
-
I guess the next step is to look at other notifications.
-
This prevents notifications to users about topics / categories they've ignored:
-
I merged it with the latest in master. Any have any other comments before I submit a pull request?
-
PRs submitted:
-
@boomzilla Wait, so there's no "reply notifications only" state now?
-
@asdf This stuff only affects notifications as far as an ignored topic (or ignored category) goes. You won't get any from those. I started looking at upvote notifications. Discussion here:
https://what.thedailywtf.com/topic/19739/notification-enhancements
-
@boomzilla I get that. But the state I want to use (don't clutter my unread list, but tell me if I'm mentioned) is now missing.
-
So, any updates?
The ticket we opened about this got closed as a duplicate but the one pointed to is closed as fixed, even though it only deals with the unread screen.
-
@JBert Seems they don't get it, or it hasn't occurred to anyone that you might want to follow

only 12k?
seriously?
i thought they'd be up to six digits at least by now the way the two of them go at it.

Yeah, but when it is one SJW against many people who are not...one tends to go in to the negative pretty quickly.

hu-uh
i guess we're not on anymore.
otherwise we might have had an automatic user suspension on our hands there.

...... not sure if or

@accalia Hundreds of downvotes in a short period of time should impair the users functionality. Else, why have them?

No they shouldn't, also fuck you.
@Polygeekery said in Ignoring a topic:

There's no reason to have voting of any kind, and we shouldn't have voting of any kind.
-
@blakeyrat said in Ignoring a topic:

Yes, they should.
I mean, maybe not around here where we have flamewars as a matter of course and for fun...but most places it should.
Also, fuck you.

You know the best thing to do with unpopular opinions? DELETE THEM. BAN THE USER WHO POSTED THEM. FUCK DIFFERING OPINIONS. THE GROUPTHINK IS ALL.
BTW, want to hear a quick explanation of how the web is the most democratic communication medium ever made? Well, it was, before assholes like polygeekery got hold of it.
-
@Polygeekery said in Ignoring a topic:

that may work okay for tiny sites that are intended to entirely self police due to lack of resident moderators, but that's not a good model to use for larger communities.
discourse did it better where sufficient flags for inappropriate or spam would eventually hide your post from the community until a moderator had a chance to look it over.
a downvote is just "i don't agree with you" or "i don't like you" or.... any number of other reasons, none of them siffucuent to restrict user permissions.
flagging the post as inappropraite, or as spam, yes if it just hides the post, possibly with a short term (an hour at most) post restriction if some threshold of posts are hidden in a short period of time, but that's it.

Well, that depends upon the community and how it conducts itself. I don't think that all differing opinions should be silenced. That depends on the community. Hell, I don't even mind the screeching vulpine idiot. He is good cannon fodder around here.
But most communities will want some manner of self moderation. Let us say for a moment that you are picking a community forum software for the NAACP or GLAAD. You would probably want some manner of self moderation so that if 4Chan or denizens of StormFront decided to swoop in on your community and there are not any moderators around, it can be taken care of and damage minimized.

Obligatory XKCD:
Here's the thing, the internet being a democratic communication medium is totally compatible with self-moderation techniques. It is extremely democratic. People are voting as a whole about whether or not they want to read your bullshit. How much more democratic can you get than that?
-
@Polygeekery Blah blah blah, we still shouldn't have gamification of people's opinions in the first place, the whole concept is retarded.
-
@blakeyrat said in Ignoring a topic:

So what's your opinion on "+1" replies?
-
@Polygeekery said in Ignoring a topic:

Actually, arguing with someone like that mostly just tends to make you sloppy. (not you you, the hypothetical opponent of someone who "argues" like he does.)
-

Obligatory XKCD:
The best part about that particular comment is you just used it more or less in the opposite direction he wrote it in. People love saying stuff like that until they realize the same stuff can be said about them.

I agree, usually. But with the way he likes to twist wording, I think it may have made me sharper. I have always tried to speak precisely. Precisely enough that more than once in my life I have been accused of speaking like a politician. My response: "I can neither confirm nor deny that statement."
Sometimes you want to have deep intellectual debates with those who are your equal or superior. Other times you just want to play Whack-A-Mole. He is a mole.
-
@Polygeekery said in Ignoring a topic:

Apparently without much success.
-
Oh, look, another mole.
-
@Polygeekery You're welcome to keep on playing flail-about-ineffectually-at-a-mole if it amuses you. I'll just be over here undermining your carrots.

"Just passing by"?

I think every time one is made, anywhere in the world, a gorilla should twist your arm off.

-
@Polygeekery The difference is that @flabdablet doesn't get nearly so pissed off with you. Tactics that work against the vulpine don't work against him.
-
Going back to the original topic, is there an ETA for this feature?
-
@PleegWat Not that I know of. I just commented on the PR:
-
@PleegWat Got a response:
Thanks for following up... I believe internally we are concerned that the function of the various states are not intuitive to first time users...
I've tried to restart the conversation in my original topic on this at the NodeBB site:

As opposed to this:
Which is immediately intuitive to everybody.
What clowns.
-
@blakeyrat While I agree that those could use text, I immediately guessed that they were Upload, Move, and Delete respectively.
-
@Magus Nevertheless, I'm not sure what's confusing about this:

No one has answered that, alas.

Gee, I wonder...

@Magus said in Ignoring a topic:

You're blocking imgur? I guarantee you that the NodeBB devs aren't, since that's how they have their forum set up.
-
@boomzilla You do get that at least half of people browse this site from behind firewalls at work, right? This place supports pasting images directly slightly better than Discourse, and those don't get blocked.

Yeah, I mentioned it a few times. People ignore, because attribution or some nonsense crap like that.
If I wanted attribution, I'd upload the image to Google and filter out which of the reposts was the original!
-
I have a feeling this may need to turn into a plugin, but it will require at least one new hook.
