4 Dimensional Operating System (Kickstarter)

Since this is the current topic in the IRC chat and I believe the forums will also love this:

Found it via todays Retsupurae video.
Filed Under: Just... watch it and "enjoy"
Warning: levels are VERY high on that kickstarter page (including the video)

I am not an accomplished programmer
What would make this simulation even better, however, would be if we could allow four dimensions to be built into the computer, at the machine language level. This is what I plan to do.
I love how his only backers are three people who are so filled with that they would pay ten dollars to read more of his blathering, and two people who don't care about any of the rewards.

@Kuro Damnit I'm at work.
I might have to dig out my headphones for a Kickstarter NonStarter. That's their best feature.
-
I can't code a thousand lines at once
I'm pretty sure the hackertyper could be edited to do just that.
-
@blakeyrat They tried the "I want to buy a new computer"-shtick with this but Slowbeef couldn't handle the video.
Filed Under: It's that great!

The sole comment is just gold.

Hi, John! You must be excited about the project.
Can you tell me what strategies you've developed for dealing with the two-state nature of transistors? Also, what language are you considering using for the compiler you propose?
Thanks in advance!
-
@Kuro The problem with Retsupurae is you have to watch them right away because about a year or two ago they adopted a "we take down videos if the person complains" policy, and so you lose a lot of videos if you don't watch them quickly.
They had to take down the Kickstarter Non-Starter video about the data who wanted to show his kids the joys of old-style JRPGs so he was porting a PORNO game to modern consoles. (With like ... slug woman and nasty shit in it.)

This guy has to be trolling.
-
@blakeyrat I would honestly advice you, to listen to the original Kickstarter video I linked.
While Retsupurae have a funny reaction, the video itself is just pure gold.Filed Under: I can imagine this being on the internet forever!
-
That really is all kinds of awesome. I can't wait to program in quadnaray.
-
@Kuro The crazy thing is that PCs do have 3D memory arrangements (think about storage), but this is still gibberish.
OMG this is insane. Ben L I hope you mirrored that video not just linked it, because I want this to be preserved.
-
It will never work, Microsoft won't give him his blessing. He thinks it doesn't matter, but they control all the CRTs, don't you know???
...
Ok, I give up, I can't think of anything crazier than the video itself. I doubt anyone here can. In absence of Swampy I think this thread is over, just pin it so we don't lose it and let us just revel in its glory.
-
As Slowbeef points out, he helpfully provides a Pepto Bismol bottle right there in the video for you to drink when his talk gives you ulcers.
-
Just imagine the possibilities of SSDS running in Busco Quadnary.
-
Is that Time Cube guy still around? He would probably support this OS.
-
Today, we use what are called Z-buffers to simulate 3 dimensions.
I love how he doesn't even know what a Z-buffer is for, much less how it works, yet he mentions it.
-
is this real face of that guy who introduce video search? Swampee something?

I would be inclined to agree, although I've seen much crazier stuff from genuine idiots.
-
@The_Quiet_One Never underestimate human stupidity

nope, that's the original from the Kickstarter page.

Pffffffffbt, just use two of them for every quadnaray state. Problem solved, in binary.
-
This dude is probably doing this for some school project, but can't even make it into an office building (or school) to at least pretend he's professional.
Check out that card table! That loosened tie! The way he's obviously reading from a paper next to the camera, but has trouble doing even that!
Are you sure this shouldn't be in the Funny Stuff category?
Edit: His overview of programming languages goes like this:
- Binary ()
- Basic, C++
- HTML, Perl, PHP, things of that nature
Everything that Bill Gates started was based off of binary, he did not program in binary, or machine language as it's called, he programmed in what's called Basic.

@Tsaukpaetra While watching the video, the only thing I could think of was "fuck you, give me money"

At least @Lorne-Kates is honest.

Sorry, that was copy-past'ad from Word, it messed up the placement of images again.
I'd like someone to show my programming in binary though.
Edit: WTF is he doing at 10:50?! Masturbating?!?!
-
@TimeBandit Can we stop with that joke please? PHP is not "What The Fuck", PHP is obviously "Holy Mother Of God How Does That Fucking Even", or HMOGHDTFE for short.
I forgot how the JavaScript one goes, but there's a tableflip somewhere in the middle.
Filed under: I'd explain the Ruby one too but it's still installing the required gems, , We need a new tagcloud to attack from posts

The wildcard dimension is clearly to encode the Time Cube.

All I see is mental illness. This man seems destined for homelessness.
On the bright side, he seems mostly harmless so far.
-
We need to cache the kick-starter post in its entirety, not just the video. This is really hilarious...
-
There's one thing I don't understand and I'm afraid it could be a make or break point of the project: if they put all 3 dimensions and data in the first 3 dimensions, won't it have an impact on the overall ease of design/program and performance? I mean, I know it's at least 10000000 times better than the current system, which packs all 3 dimensions and data (and sometimes even the 4th one - time) in just 2 dimensions, but surely it's not such huge an improvement as it could be?
What do you guys think?

From the creator's bio:
I am trained as a video editor, 3d modeller, and sound designer. My real passions, however, are in animation and game programming, though these are the subjects in which I find the most difficulty.
You don't say, are they really? I can't imagine why.
I can't help but wonder - has anyone ever mentioned to him the idea of making a career out of the things you can do well?
The whole video is an amazing mix of accurate and batshit insane, with no middle ground. It's the recurrent lurching from one to another (albeit spending most of the time on the second side) that makes it so enthralling. Like when he talks about graphics being structured as two-dimensional because monitors have a two-dimensional surface, and then immediately goes completely off the rails assuming that nobody thought advanced graphics would ever be a thing.
He's certainly right about one thing though, changing our computers to run on quadnary¹ (excuse me, Busco quadnary) would be the easiest technological upgrade ever.
I like the way he starts saying that quadnary would make the computer more stable, then digresses into explaining at great length how stability problems are normally due to the upper levels of the stack (aka "something that was done in Basic, something that was done in HTML, uh... something that was done in, er, ActionScript, or, er, something of that nature") - without ever realising that this completely contradicts his point.
Also, TIL that the number of CPU cores you have determines your RAM.
¹ My browser wants to auto-correct "quadnary" to "quandary". In this case I don't think it's wrong.

Reminds me of the TempleOs dude.
-
@swayde well yeah, insofar as both apparently have mental illness. Terry Davis, though, is an actual coder with an actual project and quite a well-executed one at that.
To my way of thinking, this kickstarter guy's rabbit hole is more like Gene Ray's than Terry Davis's.

No.

@loopback0 I WANT TO BELIEVE!

@Onyx said in 4 Dimensional Operating System (Kickstarter):
Swampy
Hey, maybe he should get himself a Kickstarter!
-
Also, got to love the reward tiers. For $10 you get a pamphlet, for $35 a desk ornament, but the actual compiler for the thing - i.e. the thing the guy is actually supposed to be producing? Five fucking thousand.
Well, okay, maybe it's hardcore enterprise software. But the actual funding goal is $2000 - so it's entirely possible he'll get funded without actually having to produce the thing.
Dude, just drop the compiler thing and rebrand the Kickstarter as "desk ornament production"...
-
Also also, the guy has a blog. With possibly the most ass-backwards explanation as to "why do you need to use classes":
TL;DR: you need classes because when you make the variable protected the compiler yells at you.
-
@thegoryone Kickstarter: a compiler that sources insults from TDWTF and throws an appropriate one st you depending on the error you make.

function invert(table) { var inverse = {}; for (var key in table) if (table.hasOwnProperty(key)) { inverse[table[key]] = key; } return inverse; }

@flabdablet I'd like to file a bug report!
it does not work correctly for the following input:
var table = { alpha : { beta:{ gamma: { delta: 4 } } } };

TempleOS is "well-executed"? You're crazier than 4-dimensional-binary guy.
